Strava app’s heat map appears to uncover locations of military bases across the world
A new feature on a popular exercise app used by military personnel has uncovered the locations of military bases and patrol routes across the world in what appears to be a huge security oversight.
The US-based sports app Strava announced last year that it was launching a new version of its Global Heat Map, which would be six times more intricate than the original model unveiled in 2015.
At the time, the company said the map was made up of information showing more than one billion activities.
While the interactive map was designed to show the most popular running and cycling routes across the world, it is being used by analysts to track down military bases, soldiers’ exercise routines and possible secret activity.
Military experts have warned the easy-to-use feature poses a security risk to soldiers operating covertly.

Nice app, maybe I'll check it out
Time to go research those local National Gu-
I mean, look at the interesting pictures posted on twitter!
Still, this is gonna piss off quiet a few folks, as this will obviously get used by paramilitary groups that have an interest in knowing the obvious patrol routes of their enemies.
Soon somebody is gonna use this info to create a real life Soliton Radar and break into a military base

Holy shit, some retards guarding the Minot AFB, as well as some of the surrounding missile silos have let their entire patrol paths be seen with this heatmap. You can legit see where the least patrolled areas are by them. GG.
What did he mean by "patriot position"
Why is it unpatriotic to know where your country's military operates. Isnt it unpatriotic to hide that shit? I know about the security concerns whatever else but still

a general location is sometimes ok, specific details like this are not. you're basically giving the enemy everything they need to plan an attack.
Another fun part of this thing is it gives you completely free access to the entirety of Digital Globe's satellite maps. These are pretty much the newest and highest quality satellite maps you can find, since Google/Bing can be years behind in some places.
I'm gonna need a little bit more explanation fellas
There's some weird ones in the middle of oceans. I guess people walking back and forth on ships.
It seems they've made their way into North Korean hands too. This is their largest (and the world's largest) stadium in Pyongyang.

It really pisses me off that this guy instantly assumes that this company is some kind of evil anti-patriotism conglomerate and not just a company that released an app that a couple of meatheads used to oust themselves.

That is absolutely not what that post said at all and there was literally a chain of 4 posts explaining that right above you
Holy shit that's bad. I wonder how the US government is gonna respond to this.

Realistically speaking? Probably enforce airplane mode while on duty or start banning apps with any sort of GPS tracking.
We're at the point now where intelligence groups can do their work with google searches and publicly available information.
does it say anywhere how recent the maps on the website are? looks like people have been walking on my buddy's long ass driveway in the middle of nowhere, kind of spooky

Does your buddy or anyone else in his household use a fitbit?

We're at the point where NATO country troops are finding out their phones contain spyware. Smartphones are turning out to be a serious security risk and I wouldn't be surprised if eventually, the military cracks down on their usage, or has companies implement a secure mode that forcibly deactivates all tracking services.
I like how when looking at my city the heatmap lights up brigther in higher-income neighborhoods full of people who give a crap about fitness apps and streets that are safe to walk/jog/etc in.

Honestly, smart devices leak so much data that I'm kind of dumbfounded that anything of the sort was allowed anywhere near any sort of even remotely covert military base.
I'm surprised so many soldiers use GPS-enabled apps. In the SAF everyone are extremely paranoid so we always put our phones on standby or flight mode.
Atleast they are still using analogue radio for chatter, right?
Right?
