• Why is "jumping" included in so many games?

Jumping is prevalent in most games around, but why? Think about it, how often to you jump throughout the day? Yet whenever jumping is not included, you feel incredibly restricted. Why and how has this mindset developed?
because it's fun when you're bored [editline]25th February 2011[/editline] in games
Thing about all games with jumping would be without jumping.
I hate games without jump. I think it just gives you the illusion of being in a world with 3 dimensions (albeit an illusion I hate not having).
I still haven't played a single game without a jump feature. Oh wait. Doctor Mario.
Double post and automerge sapped. New record, I think.
Everyone wants to jump dont you see? You better jump to.
I don't hate jumping, but it can be swapped out with other sorts of movement you'd usually do in combat. like, i forget what game it was but when you were approached with a small lege, perhaps a tall step, you'd run into it and go through the animation of stepping up and over it, instead of full on vaulting yourself over it like you would with a jump button.
Also, Sims is a life simulator, you don't jump very often there.
Because if I need to save a princess in Mushroom Kingdom jumping is needed think about the situation in the Video Game when you compare it to real-life.

So that you can get over obstacles...?
Bulletstorm doesn't have jumping and I never really notice. It's mostly because lots of games were platformers and there are still a lot of platformer elements in games today.
Gears of War didn't really have jumping, but it did have the thing Dachande is talking about. Vaulting over things, rolling, etc.

One of those occasions where realism is less important than fun. Jumping allows level designers to think horizontally and it's pretty fun to dick around the levels jumping on props and see it you can parkour yourself on top of building you're not "supposed" to access. Combine it with the ability to carry props like in Half-Life 2 and it opens up opportunity for simple platforming puzzles and new ways to go through levels. Besides, it's really immersion-breaking when you're stopped by an obstacle that's only knee-high and can't make your way over it.
I like jumping in Minecraft because it bores the fuck out of me. Jumping slows my reach for the Escape key.
You can't do jumping puzzles with it...And if you say you don't jump very often during the day... you don't go fight wars with aliens very often during the day either.
Its like being able to swing your sword when there's no one there to hit. Sure, there's no point to it, but making it so you can only attack when an enemy is in front of you would feel pretty restrictive.
Jumping implements a multi-level dimension into a game. It will let you get to higher ground, and therefore view a puzzle from a different perspective, or gain the upper hand in a firefight.
I don't go around shooting people in the head with a rifle in real life throughout my day, yet it is still in games, why? They're games, not life simulators, and the ones that actually are life simulators probably don't have jumping.
Gears of War?
I think he means of the first stage of Hitman: Blood Money.
First person games just don't feel right without jumping
Why is walking included in games?...we should just float Edit: Some people don't know sarcasm it seems.
Because without it the A button is out of a job, and therefore loses his home and turns to drugs and suicide
Because without it the A button is out of a job, and therefore loses his home and turns to drugs and suicide
you must mean spacebar
You can jump whenever you want in real life wither you want to or not. You can jump whenever you want in games wither you want to or not. That's the way I see it.
you must mean spacebar
Can't please everyone.
Can't jump in Hitman! :eng101:
without a jump button i feel that im stuck on the ground, only to look up into the sky and cry
