All the times I've posted this I've been patiently ignored :(
so I ask : What are the minimum requirements for a Minecraft SMP server, 5-10 people, maybe TNT (only by me tho) little to no lag

Googling helps a lot.
because contradictory information helps a lot!
Let's see... You'll want a multicore processor, at least 2 gigs of ram, (preferably four), a good network connection, and please, for the love of god, use Linux for your server, NOT windows. Servers run at least two-fold better on Linux, or at least in my experiences they have. If you're new to what Linux is, go look up Ubuntu, that'll get you on the right track.

It's not contradictory, it gave you an entire page of helpful links.

4GB DDR3
A good HDD - 10kRPM or SSD
15kB/s upload for each player
finally.
BUT I notice that minecraft runs about 7 times slower on ubuntu than windows
Are you guys trolling?
I'm running a server on a 1.8Ghz single core with 2 gigs or ram and a harddrive old as time, the only good part is the 100mbit network.
Yet, it's perfectly playable and never lags, takes about 10 seconds for the map to fully load in all directions on far viewdistance.
1gb is enough, 2gb is better. The thing that'll affect it most is CPU and HDD. Minecraft reads/writes a lot at the moment. Oh, and upload speed.
My server is running on an Acer Aspire, lag is rare if it even happens at all.
In fact I have a 512mb vps from Compwhiz and it runs a minecraft server just fine.

Really? My laptop can't handle over 1 player without being on Ubuntu.
Make sure you're using the Sun Java runtime, not OpenJDK.

aha, but normal Sun Java is broken :/
ok so ill be running it on a 1.6-2ghz celeron m with 4gb ddr3 and 500gb 10000rpm disk rite? i have unlim bandwidth and ~30 mbps upload
It should work with that hardware.
Would you stop making threads for one-liner questions?
That's what the general chat is for.

Which package are you trying to install? I think it was sun-java6-bin you had to install, if that's not it ubuntu should be all helpful and provide alternative packages.
Actually, if you're going to be using the machine for a server, try something super lightweight like CentOS or Arch.
openjdk is so slow oh god don't even TRY to play minecraft with that.

No
Minecraft can only run on a single thread so you want a a pretty fast CPU. Just doesn have to be multi core. Also 1Gb of ram is good for 15 and less people. Any more and you will need to upgrade. Also a hard drive with a very high RPM is a must. Reason being is minecraft saves and it saves a lot. No SSD though you will just ruin it with at the small writes to it.

Getting a SSD will be a waste of money since you are doing such small writes to it. Soon enough it's going to go poof and your going to have to buy a new one.

Also Debian IMO is a pretty good OS to run for a MC server.

honestly I agree with nerdy (I think? the sentence is fairly confusing) on the SSD thing. You might as well just set up a RAID array like JWJ uses. I do have to disagree on the choice of OS, while debian is lightweight it still uses much more resources than CentOS or Arch.
unless you're doing the debian minimal install, but I hear that's missing quite a few important-ish packages.
If you are hosting it all from home or have access to a dedicated box or vps.
I'd say the minimum would be:
A 1.5/2ghz single core,
1/2gb ram (feel free to limit the amount of memory minecraft has access too though),
A decent HDD or RAID setup,
~20mbps upload.
Also look into MineOS: http://minecraft.codeemo.com/index.html

I only reccomend Debian because it's easy to learn and use for someone not experienced with Linux.
Also i am on my iPhone in class so I forget what I am typing sometimes and stuff comes out weird.

Minecraft runs slowly or the server software runs slowly? Minecraft (as in SSP) might get a performance hit in linux due to video drivers and such, but when it's running the server software it *should* outperform a windows machine.
If you have the ram to spare, i recommend setting up a ramdisk, 2-4 gigs in size, although that isn't an option for everyone.
I have a friend that runs a small private server with 4gigs and a Core2Quad, but he also has a university internet connection so there are never any bandwidth issues.

Will now be using MineOS. Now just to hack through the DLink and watch out for the ip

I had a server running perfectly fine on a damned 2 year old Eee PC.
512mb of RAM
900mhz Processor

This encourages me, because I have an old laptop made by Acer (I think it's called a netbook?) and I might just run a Minecraft server on it.
It all depends on the number of players, and if you also want to play minecraft on the same computer.
Guys can we just let this thread die? I've got the server ready and running already
Guys can we just let this thread die? I've got the server ready and running already
No because what if someone else needs to know server requirements for Minecraft.
No because what if someone else needs to know server requirements for Minecraft.
Then we'd need a thread with a clean and proper answer. Also support mega thread
Then we'd need a thread with a clean and proper answer. Also support mega thread
True but we can discuss the requirements and if they ever change in here instead of making a new thread. We can't do that in the support thread.
