Darker skin is associated with poor farming communities like the isaan region
A lot of Asians just think lighter skin is more attractive.
There probably are subconscious social reasons like people who have lighter skin arent working hard labour who usually get tanned due to working outside a lot but most people I know just think its more attractive
The cosmetics/cosmetic surgery industry is Korea tier but it's not limited to that, anything to do with the face concept is pretty prevalent

Both cause damage to your skin, it's just that tanning has become more "commonplace" in western societies, so people tend to ignore the health repercussions of sitting yourself in the sun for hours without protection, or putting yourself in a tanning bed.
A lot of skin whitening chemicals are either toxic, carcinogenic, or sometimes both. Mixtures that aren't are usually very expensive or don't have the effect that people who seek "skin whitening" are looking for.

it's kinda odd to me why that's a problem. do those same people have no problem with the idea that tan skin is being promoted as being more beautiful? I think it's hypocritical if so and that it's also a very western-centric view. in general, people in east and south asia have preferred fairer skin long before contact with the west and I think it's kinda silly to apply western views to other areas.
it's kinda funny to me how white people want to be more tan and tan people want to be more white. feels like what's considered beautiful is what people aren't

No, it's not being 'whiter', it's being more pale. As in the opposite of tan, which is something a fuckton of people do because they think being tan looks good. And either way, what's wrong with it? Some people like the way Black people look, some people like the way Asians look. Why is it an issue if they like the way White people look?

It's more about the whiteness as an indication of higher class than just a simple aesthetic choice. Also, really tough for you to get born with dark skin, you're probably gonna be miserable about it for the rest of your life as you spend your money on whitening creams to pretend to be like the airbrushed starlettes on TV. It's not just a matter of taste regarding skin colour.

Tanning isn't the same as blackface. Whitening is essentially reverse blackface, you pretend to have a different skin colour to be more worthy. The issue isn't about racism though, it's just some bizarre class thing.
