New Jersey teen gets accepted by all 8 Ivy League schools
(CNN) - Talk about an embarrassment of riches.
A New Jersey teenager has to make a decision soon most high school seniors can only dream of -- deciding on which Ivy League school to attend in the fall. The problem, if you want to call it that, is that she was accepted into all of them. All eight of them.
Ifeoma White-Thorpe said she was shaking when she got the eighth acceptance letter.
"I was like, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, like this might be eight out of eight and I clicked it and it said 'Congratulations' and I was like oh my goodness!" White-Thorpe told CNN affiliate WABC-TV.
White-Thorpe, a senior and student government president at Morris Hills High School in Rockaway, has to choose between Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton, Dartmouth and Brown.
She wants to study biology and pursue a career in global health. Since all of the Ivy League schools "have great research facilities," she decided to apply to them all.
Students getting into all of the Ivies is a monumental feat, but it's happened to a handful of teens over the past couple of years -- Kwasi Enin in 2014, Harold Ekeh in 2015 and Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna and Kelly Hyles last year.
She also got accepted into Stanford.
Imagine doing so well that picking which of the 8 Ivy League colleges to go to is an actual problem for you.
Doing well enough to choose between all 8 Ivies is a pretty serious achievement, I hope they continue with the same promise throughout whichever career path they take.

even with scholarships, ivy league schools are extremely expensive

If you got accepted to all 8, you are not going to be paying.
Although she's probably already $10k in the hole from the app fees.

What the fuck you ply that much to apply?
To apply to every single university and college in the Republic you pay either €50 for online or €80 for the paper version. And that's for a *late* application in May. It's €25 for online and €40 for paper otherwise.
You guys just get fucked for education over there. Absolute bollocks.

Oh so you have to pay for the pleasure of applying there.
Although I don't like the culture there, the one thing I'll say about Trinity College in Ireland is that they don't pull this horseshit.

Its because of the huge amount of applications they receive, legit and joke applications need to be processed, needs to be read by a human and such. Its like Steam Greenlight costing $100 or whatever it is to filter out non serious applicants.
imagine people blowing off this girl's accomplishments by just yabbering about affirmative action
that's what my aunt did to the last guy who got accepted to all Ivy's
Actually, a lot of the ivy leagues offer full scholarships to any students who havw a hard time paying

I know at the school I go to it's like 100$ to apply, but that just gets put towards your tuition if you're accepted

It's also because of this that there are not actually that many applicants to Ivy League schools. While they obviously get a lot more applicants than they can accept, it's still significantly less than many other colleges.

Depends really, my sister is at Cornell on a full ride.

Most of these schools are funded with a variety of trusts, subsidies, and grant programs that ensure they can provide extremely generous financial aid. Harvard in particular is known to write a virtually blank check to its accepted students for whatever costs they can't pay themselves.
Isn't it like $100 to apply to each school?

Yeah it stops people from wasting their time
If the application is an issue you can't afford ivy league school anyway

Interesting how non serious applicants would appear to be short-hand for poor ones.

its not that expensive and almost all schools waive the application fee for people like her. i can't speak to ivy league but i applied to like 4-5 schools mainly because they waived the fee so there really wasn't any reason not to.
Hopefully she can handle the stress from going to an Ivy League school.
Are Ivy League schools really what people make them out to be in terms of academics?
When I was 17 some American took the effort to come to our school (which was in Malaysia) to take in applications for the college he was representing and he told us that the Ivy Leagues are just fancy shmancy elitist gimmick since its conception is pretty much from a basketball league.

Those are what people just think ivy-leagues are at face-value. Getting into an ivy-league school is an extraordinary feat, because they're literally the greatest the world can offer you in terms of education (though I think Oxford is somewhere in between there). Having a perfect GPA or amazing SAT/ACT scores literally means nothing in the eyes of most ivies, you need to really show them you're capable of even handling the workload of them.
That dude probably didn't have a clue what he was talking about, or maybe was a little flustered he wasn't accepted into one. Any ivy-league you get into will set you for life in terms of career-finding anywhere, provided you're as smart as they think you are.

You do know there's been white people who have been entered into all 8 ivy-leagues too, right?
You're making quite a big assumption yourself that they've been entered in due to affirmative action. Whites still make up the vast majority of ivy-league schools.
Similar prestige over here in the UK.
You make it into Oxford / Cambridge your set and private companies legit respect your achievement.
You go anywhere else and you might as well have gone to the local run of the mill uni.
Its kinda hard explaining that to students who go as all they see is the grade criteria separating the uni's. Once you start seeing job specs that ask for a standard grading that you realize you could have saved a fair bit of money.

I thought this article might be selectively listing blacks there, but to be honest I did not care to look for racial breakdowns. I feel pretty secure that when normalized to population size they will be over represented as affirmative action makes it easier for them (opposed to asians for whom it becomes harder. Well everyone not benefiting from it then has it harder, if there are limited spots. Of course, if they can get into all 8 then limited spots is not a problem). In normal admissions and in these exceptional cases.
So if she would have been accepted to all 8 without affirmative action, it's unfortunate that I can't know and the system automatically puts that into doubt. Not to say she's not smart either way, if she can choose between the 8, but it's not an even playing field to make comparisons.
