BEIJING: A group of Chinese tourists has been fined 105,000 yuan (US$15,842) for chasing a herd of endangered Tibetan antelopes with four-wheel drives inside a national reserve in Tibet. This happened during China's week-long national day holiday last week. The seven tourists chased the animals for more than a minute in order to take photos with them, said the Tibetan forestry authority on Sunday (Oct 8).
In a video taken by a bystander, two cars were seen speeding dangerously close to the animals.
An official with the Tibetan forestry authority said frightened Tibetan antelopes running at top speed can suffer from heart and lung failure, and possibly death due to pulmonary artery rupture.
Although wardens found that the animals were not harmed, Xinhua news agency reported that each tourist was slapped with a 15,000 yuan (US$2,262) fine for "disturbing rare wildlife's living and breeding."
However, some netizens felt that the punishment was too light, reported news channel CGTN.
Damn idiots. Don't disturb a wildlife, simple as that. That fine was too high though.

The fine was not too high. They were really stupid, and they need to suffer the consequences. It's an endangered animal. Just because some people that lack common sense want to have fun shouldn't mean we lose a species.
A fine should be fair. Article states that no harm was done to them. 15000 greens just for wildlife disturbance is too much. Should be 9000$ at best.
It was total for the group, it's even in the op.

Hmm, bit steep for just running behind antilopes
with four-wheel drives
Wait what...
The drivers should have been charged with attempted murder; but it's "just" animals so the law considers their lives a fraction of the value of a human, if that.
If it wasn't an endangered species, I suspect nothing at all would have happened to these people.

So we need to wait for someone to actually kill a herd of animals before we fine them? I'd think at that point the punishment would be even worse.
If we applied your logic elsewhere, if someone shot at you and missed, they shouldn't get the sentence for attempted murder, nah, that's too harsh. Just a slap on the wrist, they missed didn't they?

This isn't comparable to a murder. It's more of a destruction of property kind of deal.
And no, I've never implied that a tragedy was needed to fine them, as you're implying right there.

I hate it, but there has to be a line somewhere. I'd be in favor of that for anyone killing Gorillas though. Antelopes however. I mean I'm not saying harshly punish them, I'm just saying it's not murder in a human sense.
Fuck I'd say this punishment wasn't harsh enough.
I... don't understand why you'd do this? Like how do you have such a lack of respect for wildlife that you'd threaten them just to get a bunch of photos no one will ever fucking see.
It's good to see Chinese tourists don't limit their stupidity with animals to Australia.

The group was charged 15k. Each individual only got a fine of 2.6k. Seems appropriate to me.

Except that murder by definition is killing another human, there's completely separate laws for unlawful killing of animals.
Chinese tourists are the worst

I also am glad they do not limit their stupidity to the grand canyon

Why do they have to fucking touch everything
Is it so hard to have just a little bit of self control?
It doesn't surprise me to find there's a subreddit dedicated to Chinese tourists

It wasn't even $15,000. It was 15,000 Yuan, which is $2,600.
Regardless, high fines are in place for people not to do stupid, illegal shit in the first place. It's a deterrent.
I remember reading somewhere on Facepunch how these tourists aren't used to the social expectations of anywhere outside of China which is why they act so rudely; they literally don't know how to act.

It actually was 15k USD for the group in total, 105k Yuan. Divided by 7 is 2.26k USD or 15k Yuan.

Not even the "language barrier" is an excuse to defend that.
I still vividly remember that in high school, we had a chinese student that ended up loudly spitting on the ground during class and acted like it was nothing, he ended up getting punished and he was acting surprised why.

During my master's course we had one chinese student who used to loudly hock a loogie into the fucking trash bin. One of our professors was also of Chinese descent (but had settled and was working in England for a while) and he was fucking mortified, so when he caught him doing it again he put him on blast in Cantonese.
Same student close to graduation was caught going to everyone's computer (including mine), stealing animation files, rendering them out and compiling them for his own demo reel. :v: What a shitbird. I never really even understood how he qualified for the course to begin with considering he couldn't speak a lick of English. Mind you, they're not all like that, we had another Chinese girl in the class and she was a real sweetie who did her level best despite broken English to socialize and do her fair share of work during group projects, even if she wasn't technically proficient and needed a little bit of help.

Oh i met and have many chinese friends (know one that studied with me in elementary school and is now a singer that starred in some documentary about living outside of China), i even managed to get a job as a steward thanks to a chinese woman that was so helpful, even today i thank her for the opportunity.
There is a big split on foreign chinese people that just don't understand and not care about social etiquette and baffles me (between tourists and such). Luckily my work mostly welcomes business people and it's a relief overall.

I mean, if you look at how pushy and rude they seem when they're in Western countries it looks fucking alien, but I came from a country like that, so I know exactly where it comes from - there's just so many goddamn people in their home countries that if you try to do "the polite thing" people will just walk all over you - you need to be pushy and aggressive and rude to just survive.
India is a lot like that and I come from Mumbai so if you've seen what local mass transit is there (you know, all those pictures of people sitting on trains :v:) you'll realize that you need to go aggro just to get into the damn train compartment because nobody's going to be nice - everyone's got shit to do, places to be. The closest I've seen to that kind of environment in the Western world arguably has to be New York, especially taking the subways during the morning rush hour. But because there is a strong western concept of "personal space" which is entirely non-existent in,er, my end of the world :v: :

it's actually not all that bad and it's not the kind of crowded I'm used to if I needed to take a train to downtown Mumbai from the suburbs.
My point is, it's easy to see why shitty Chinese Tourists are the way they are, but there are no excuses for them not learning to turn it off when they visit another country. But then again, it's possible that they just don't know any other way and these things take time.
