Windows Central broke the news that a gaming outlet had visited Microsoft to cover specs
A major gaming outlet recently visited Microsoft to take a look at Project Scorpio's internals, ahead of a planned exclusive blowout of coverage.
Forza Motorsport 7 was utilized to showcase Scorpio's power, which we revealed recently has been planned for some time as a headline title to exemplify the power of the next Xbox.
Forza Motorsport 7 will reportedly hit a 4K resolution on Project Scorpio, and if our information is to be believed, it'll look truly stunning.
Supposedly this is going to be a "true" 4K console as opposed to PS4 Pro (which, if I recall correctly, doesn't run many, if any, games at a native 4K resolution). Guess we'll see Thursday, because the specs should give us a decent idea.
Also, I'm glad DigitalFoundry are the guys doing this, I love their videos.
Digital Foundry are definitely the right guys to break it - I'd say it's even a show of confidence from MS, because DF are nothing but rigorous.
Is Microsoft moving towards more frequent hardware releases, games with graphics config?
Very curious if it's going to handle 1080p 60 fps and finally end the horrendous 900p era.
4K seems very unrealistic and is more of a PR gimmick to get people to buy for their newly upgraded 4K TVs.

DF did some testing a while back that showed that PS4 Pro could've also been a 1080p 60FPS box - at least most of the time. Trouble is that the PS4 Pro (and afaik Scorpio) doesn't use a more powerful CPU, so you end up with a bottleneck there.
Great move from Microsoft

This would be the ideal situation, 4K is barely breaking into the PC scene on 1080s & nobody buys 4k monitors except people who can also afford a 1080 lol.
4k is the future, but to make a console try and run it is really stupid.

The former yes, don't know about the latter.
If this runs Jaguar it'll be dissapointing as hell
I wonder if Xbox One X will be the final name
Very, very curious to see how they will handle all this. PS4 Pro is/was such a mess with a bad conference, confusing marketing and mediocre upgrades in games.
This year PS has a ton of good exclusives and some very promising games have been announced. They are also riding on the nostalgia train with Jak And Dexter, Crash, Wipeout, etc... Plus Nintendo Switch is in everyone's focus. MS really needs to nail this.

I thought the whole marketing deal was clear and shit
But yeah the upgrades the games got were kinda mediocre
If all the games still have to work on the OG xbone too I really don't see most devs doing much more than a resolution bump, same issue with PS4 pro.
Am I the only one finding significance in the fact that Microsoft decided to open up the Scorpio to Digital Foundry (and eurogamer, sure, but I'm guessing they'll be mostly quiet with this and just publish what DF finds) instead of, say, Kotaku or IGN?

MS teased Xbox Scorpio as "the most powerful console ever made". This revel will probably be full of technical terms and I'm not sure IGN or Kotaku even have the staff who would know how to properly handle all that. When PS4 got revealed most of them didn't even know what HDR is. On the other hand DF specialized in testing performance of both games and tech, so they have much more credibility even though they are less known to general public.

Of course the PS4 Pro runs some games at native 4K, why wouldn't it? :v:

Most games run at 1800p, which is kind of like the 4K version of 900p
What the fuck is the point if they lock games to 30fps
Sorry guys you're dreaming if you think you'll get 60fps
It's "unfair" for xbone users. Same deal with ps4 pro I'd bet

Who are "they"?
Game developers are free to have their games run at 60fps if they want to.
I don't know of any console with a 30FPS lock.

Look at the ps4, for "competitive" reasons multiplayer is locked to the same frames over all ps4 platforms.

With upscaling techniques and such discussed in that Microsoft document there's little chance that Scorpio will be able to handle many games in 4K natively.

No platform has only 60+ fps titles though, so whatever point you tried to make doesn't make much sense.
To be honest, I'm seeing it being the same case as the PS4 Pro, only it can probably handle 1080p 60 better than the Pro can.
I don't see it being true 4K, especially with the advances of TAA and checkerboarding (and MS's Scorpio docs mentioning that). We probably won't get "true 4K" consoles until the true next generation, and even then, I'm still expecting some lower res games. Especially with more and more consumers pushing for higher and higher framerates.
It'll still be interesting to see what the Scorpio is packing, however. While I doubt it'll bring the Xbone or MS back into the spotlight, it should at least be an interesting system in its own right.

It's definitely gonna be able to handle 4x the pixels of xbone, but not much more than that. Which means that the games that weren't already 1080p on the xbone probably won't be true 4K on the new one.
Hell, even checkerboarding is good enough as long as you're rendering at 4K checkerboarded and not lower res checkerboard + upscale afterwards. Most people won't even be able to notice a difference, especially when you're playing a good distance away from your TV.
This is basically an attempt to future proof a console, and as the game technology comes forward, it then slowly drops the 4K back to 1080p or even 900p. As time goes on the gamedevs optimize their games less and less because they now have more power to work with.
I just hope it gets some games. I would really like to buy the Scorpio but at the moment, it doesn't really have anything that appeals to me (except for Rare Replay). I guess it is to be expected when you own like the other consoles & PC. Still I do hope Microsoft does good with it though.

Games aren't getting less optimized. As new technology emerges, it's very much the opposite.
However, they are getting more and more HW demanding.

Well, they wouldnt have too have a much better cpu. The main bottleneck for 4K gaming is the graphics card.
though I'd speculate that they will use a variant of the AMD Ryzen.

Idk if they will, they probably finalized the HW design before Ryzen released.
Maybe they've been cooperating with AMD about something like that though
I can't wait to see this bomb as hard as the Xbox One
