After the Supercharger network for long distance travel and Destination chargers for charging once at a destination, Tesla is now unveiling a new version of its Supercharger designed as an urban charging solution. They updated the design and architecture of the Supercharger for new stations to be installed in city centers. Tesla wrote in a blog post:
Superchargers in urban areas have a new post design that occupies less space and is easier to install, making them ideal for dense, highly populated areas. To increase efficiency and support a high volume of cars, these Superchargers have a new architecture that delivers a rapid 72 kilowatts of dedicated power to each car. This means charging speeds are unaffected by Tesla vehicles plugging into adjacent Superchargers, and results in consistent charging times around 45 to 50 minutes for most drivers.
That’s down from Tesla’s main Superchargers having a capacity of up to 145 kW and Tesla’s vehicles being capable of supporting up to 120 kW.
https://electrek.co/2017/09/11/tesla-unveils-new-urban-supercharger-with-slower-charge-rate/
people reading this might be confused, as a slower charge rate sounds bad, right? Wrong. These chargers will be placed locally around supermarkets, shopping malls and restaurants. The lower charge rate makes it easier to place these in these places. And besides, most likely you will come out fully charged when you leave.
Im not gonna miss our old loud smelly cars. When i walk out on the street i can barely talk on the phone, let alone relax. Cars are super loud. Walking the same streets while breathing clean air and be able to hear your thoughts sounds great. I like this future. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline] ICE cars can stay in the world of motorsports though. Theres something awesome about these roaring big chunks of steel powered by explosions. Just not when im trying to walk and chill.
They also make a cool whirring sound too.
Isn't it entirely possible that they'll end up forced to make artificial loud noises too, for safety purposes?
Isn't it entirely possible that they'll end up forced to make artificial loud noises too, for safety purposes?
Only when traveling below 18 mph, and they will likely be directional. They also aren't that loud.
Those noises are needed too; my car doesn't have them and when going through a car park so many people just walk in front of me or continue walking in the road as they don't know I'm there.
Im not gonna miss our old loud smelly cars. When i walk out on the street i can barely talk on the phone, let alone relax. Cars are super loud.
Do you live in the 60s or something?
Those noises are needed too; my car doesn't have them and when going through a car park so many people just walk in front of me or continue walking in the road as they don't know I'm there.
People walk infront of my Leaf even with the fake noise on. People are dumb.
I dunno about you but I reckon cars are quiet as fuck nowadays, even more so if they're a hybrid car
I suppose you're right. Unfortunately most people still drive older cars. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline] Where i live anyways
Do you live in the 60s or something?
Don't go to the American south. Not uncommon for your car to become a gas chamber because some cunt in front of you decided his truck didn't really need that catalytic converter.
Do you live in the 60s or something?
If you live in a city, I can guarantee you that most parks readily available are within seeing distance of a road. So are all residences. You've probably become accustomed to how loud cars are. I can hear some right now if I focus on it, and it's 3AM and my windows are closed. Cars are pretty bad. They pollute the air, are really loud, and they leave a film of shit on everything around them given enough time.

There are enough older cars that aren't noisy. Cars crusing along aren't so bad for noise. Stopping and starting in cities they can be a bit loud though. Busses and trucks are the main culprits though.
As a man who lives on a hill i can say that i wont miss the horrible sound of someone gunning the engine at 3:00 AM.

God knows they aren't using their eyes to avoid getting run over, so we need the cars to announce their presence to pedestrians. Modern ICE cars are already too quiet as it is, and with all the cars puttering around on battery power, its a goddamn miracle we arent seeing a sharp rise in smartphone addicts getting mowed down because they dont look before they step. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline]
Don't go to the American south. Not uncommon for your car to become a gas chamber because some cunt in front of you decided his truck didn't really need that catalytic converter.
What's really funny is that high flow, modern, catalysts cost barely more than OEM, sap all of two horsepower on a bad day(output fluctuates by more than that due to weather!), and clean the exhaust way better than anything that came off. I make sure I keep mine catalyzed, on account of, you know, CO and HC being toxic shit, and I'd fit catalysts even to a Model T if I had one. Modern cats just dont have the flaws old ones did and thers's no excuse to not run one. I even feel they make the engine sound a bit better. [editline]12th September 2017[/editline]
People walk infront of my Leaf even with the fake noise on. People are dumb.
I've had someone walk out in front of my 31 year old, completely unmuffled, loud AF I6 pickup before. People really are dumb. Or perhaps entitled? Think pedestrians can walk wherever the fuck they choose and have every other member of traffic avoid them? I've also lost count of how many times I have avoided being cut off or sideswiped on the freeway because of the lack of muffling devices in my exhaust stream. It seems even smartphone distraction through the sound insulation of a modern car isnt enough to counter an old engine under heavy load with naught but a catalytic converter and a tailpipe to quiet it down. Deer even think twice before jumping out in front of me. Seems there is a plus or two to letting the world hear Detroit's swan song uncut. ....scary thing is I'm not even close to the loudest thing on the road. Needless to say I have fuck all plans to muffle that thing. Maybe change the tone to be more pleasing to the gearhead's ears and less 'Farmer John's handmedown', but I dont plan on dropping any dBs. Every stock Harley, modern Mustang GT that goes by me drowns it right out anywho.
Don't go to the American south. Not uncommon for your car to become a gas chamber because some cunt in front of you decided his truck didn't really need that catalytic converter.
Not to mention the countless people who, for whatever reason, wake up one day and think to themselves "...You know, my car's exhaust could be more obnoxiously loud..." This goes for anything. Civics, Nissans, F-150s/250s, anything they can get their hands on. I legit was walking down the street one day and walked by a car wash where a truck left that was louder than anything I had ever heard in my entire life, and I live near an air-force base that used to house jets who liked to fly stupidly low to the ground as they made their rounds to the Melrose bombing range.
