The Government has confirmed that 16 newly built properties in South Yorkshire will be demolished to make way for the HS2 railway.
Residents on the Shimmer housing estate in Mexborough have learned they will lose their homes after ministers finalised the route for the controversial high-speed line.
Affected homeowners will be offered comparable properties, the Department for Transport has promised.
The Government has concluded that this route will result in considerably fewer demolitions, as proposed alternatives would require greater numbers of homes and businesses to be knocked down.
d'oh
Yeah but the plans have been on display at the planning office for months

In a locked filing cabinet.
Still the most pointless fucking high speed railway development project.
Its not even going to span the whole country, whats the fucking point.

Like the whole plan is to just link up London to Manchester and Leeds, everything past that is just "HS2 service running on traditional lines" which basically means, standard trains because the tracks can't support high speed rail.
The residents and owners of the to-be-demolished houses may be better off than those of the nearby ones that are kept.
High-speed trains are loud, and even otherwise the noise from the railway shouldn't be underestimated. Hopefully they'll implement proper noise protection.

Its going to span between the two most highly populated cities in the U.K. This will help even the wage gap from South to North and help the north massively when people can live in deprived shitholes on decent wages ( thus paying higher council tax etc for the shitholes, helping to gentrify them). Most people's defence against hs2 seems to be putting the money in the NHS, but what do you do once that moneys spent and all it does it keep it alive for another year before the inevitable privatisation. Atleast Hs2 will eventually provide the economy with far more than it has cost.
Dont swing my words to assume I don't care about the old, disabled or ill. I do, but the investment from Hs2 (life expectancy is lower in deprived areas) may help more than just beating blood from a very dry stone.
Ishwoo is right, i genuinely support HS2. The North needs more connection to the South.

Honestly I'd rather better west-east connectivity and a more centralised rail system.
Having to travel down to London and then back up to get a decent fare price is ridiculous.

Most northerners I've talked to would rather have a wall :v:

Anything south of Clay Cross they can keep but the rest is ours.
Does the UK have its own version of imminent domain or are the landowners fucked?
Anyone who understands the capacity issues on our railways knows why this is needed.
Our victorian age railways cannot physically fit any more trains on, yet demand is growing daily.
HS2 will fix these problems - the long distance trains will utilise the new infrastructure and the slower stopping services can use the old infrastructure.
They're not building a high speed railway for fun, it's just the best way to go - if you're going to build a new long distance railway you might as well make it as fast as possible.

Also there are 216 houses on this estate - the article makes it sound like they're going to demolish the whole thing.

Takes too long, too expensive, same reason musk's tunnel plans are unrealistic

It's called compulsory purchase over here but works basically the same as I understand it

There is apparently also compensation available for people whose lose value due to being close to the new line
uh oh
They get shacks under the railway

it increases capacity, and lays the groundwork for further expansion
if they can finish this and then extend the line to Edinburgh it would make a significant difference to travel times
Tunnel?
Huge fucking viaduct over the estate is clearly the way
