VW says its Tesla Model 3-fighter will be $7,000 to $8,000 cheaper
VW has been quick to compare its upcoming first all-electric vehicle built from the ground up, codenamed I.D. Concept, to Tesla’s Model 3.
Specs-wise, it appears to be competitive with the Model 3 on paper, but they never gave a precise price range until now.
At the Automobil Forum this week (via automobil-produktion – German), Volkswagen chief strategist Thomas Sedran said that they were aiming for the vehicle to be about $7,000 to $8,000 cheaper than the Model 3, which would mean about 25,000 euros (~$28,000).
...
We learned last month that the VW plans to launch the vehicle in Europe in 2019, probably a year after Tesla’s Model 3 reaches the market, and it’s not clear when it will be available in the US.

Hoping they actually come out with something decent, and high volume.
VW has a long, long list of pricey options though.
Interesting if it looks like a golf/polo.
Interesting if it looks like a golf/polo.
Important to note that if it's Golf sized it would be significantly smaller than the 3.
I've been saying that if VW puts out a Passat/Arteon or a Jetta but fully electric it'd be killer. Don't go for the wacky weird concepts that we've been seeing. Just take your existing design language and rebuild them around EVs.
I mean, obviously, sticking a battery pack on a Golf won't work out of the box. Not as good at least. But if they take their design language and apply it to a new, EV, platform? That'd be killer.

Don't they already have an electric golf?
VW really gotta push itself after the controversy. Hopefully something good comes out of it.
Especially if it trickles down to Audi, oh lord.

Yeah, the e-Golf has about ~120 miles range iirc and costs a bit more than the Model 3 will.

I'm still not sure about the value proposition of a no-options model 3..
I think it's gonna be quite rudimentary, possibly not "feel worth" 35k... I love the fact that it's electric, but for that price you can get a no options Audi A4, which is undoubtedly "more car" for the money.
I have a fear that the model 3 is gonna end up still being seen almost as a luxury car, or as a second car for those who can afford more than one.
EDIT:
I really want an electric car, but as long as you are paying a hefty premium just for it being electric, I don't see many people buying one.
Once they get below 20k, while retaining the interior quality of conventional cars, then there will be a boom in popularity.

I dunno... I wouldn't get an optionless A4.
Options are what makes the car when it comes to the upper echelon of the german car industry, or at least it used to be.

Yeah, but then you have an optionless German luxury car, which is the welfare model with everything stripped out and a tiny engine.
Please give me an electric modern volkswagon type 2.

Have to wait until the 28th to know what's what with the Model 3. If they included AP as standard I'd buy the shit out of the base model.
does the model 3 still not come with an instrument panel, ala speedometere and such

I don't like this.
It just feels odd not having anything directed at the driver, and the screen looks like a tacked on tablet.
I'd say they could have come up with a better design here, but I guess this was their exact idea so...

A no options A4 still uses gas, has less storage space, is more expensive to maintain, and isn't sold with a suite of range topping autonomous driving capabilities
Also what's with everyone asking for desirable cars to be sold for under $20k? I can't think of almost any midsize sedan available for that sort of price, especially ones with a decent interior, and especially especially ones that are electric and semi-autonomous. I'd love a car like that to exist but I just don't see that as being that possible.

Sure it's possible. It's called waiting a couple of years for the depreciation to smack the 30k cars.

I think it's something you could get used to. The screen is how it is so that the speed is in the drivers peripheral vision.

They could have made it like Audi, giving one in the middle and another on the usual place for the instrument cluster.
They'd be able to not clutter one screen with too much information aswell.

I have a 2012 VW Golf, the most basic model, and it's still a fantastic car. It doesn't have the touch screen radio or leather seats, but it's basic bluetooth radio kicks ass and the car just runs. If VW came out with an EV that was based on the Golf, I would absolutely buy one if my current golf ever dies (which it probably never will)

It's like that because they're putting more of a focus on the car driving you instead of the other way around. They could have very easily kept the HUD, but they got rid of it in the new model.

Me personally, speed and engine revs should be in your direct vision, not peripheral. Having to look away from the road to tell how fast your going is a pretty silly design.

Unless you have a HUD the speedo is never in your direct vision.

What are pre-owned cars.

With the Tesla's speedo, you have to take your eyes away from the road to look at your speedo. It's also on a lit screen with a fuckload of other information it which can easily be distracting. With pretty much every other car, it's directly under your line of sight and can be looked at without fully taking your eyes off the road.
I get that Musk wants it designed that way to further push for autonomous driving, but theres a lot of people like me who want a Tesla but won't ever use it's autonomous driving abilities. They should really just include both or give you the option.

I don't think you will have to take your eyes off the road anymore than you would with a regular speedo. It's still at the same level as a regular speedo, if not slightly higher. When you look at your speedo in a regular car your focus changes from the road to the speedo. The speedo will probably also fade in a bit or something as you approach the limit so it's more noticeable in your peripheral vision. It's about at the same level as your hands would be in the 10 - 2 position from the looks of it.
This is the kind of competition I want to see.

I don't think it's as much of an issue as you make it out to be.
Having the speedometer in the bottom right instead of just the bottom will not make much of a difference, I'm sure.

At first the idea of it does seem a bit weird, I hated it at first. After thinking about it for awhile though and playing about with placing my phone in a similar position in my car I think it will be a non-issue though.
Is it secretly going to have a miniature combustion engine inside that vents pollutants when nobody's looking? :v:

Id have to get into a Tesla to try it for myself before I can say anything for certain.
I live in North Dakota, so its tough to get a Tesla up here. Ironically, the last time I checked anyway, the only Tesla charging stations in the state are in Williston, which is the center of ND's oil industry.

Its preference more than anything else. I drive around 1,000 miles a week in my company vehicle, the minor differences in it and my personal vehicle are annoying enough as it is, having the spedo be moved out of my line of sight is over the top for me.
