DeepMind's scientific mission is to push the boundaries of AI by developing systems that can learn to solve complex problems. To do this, we design agents and test their ability in a wide range of environments from the purpose-built DeepMind Lab to established games, such as Atari and Go.
Testing our agents in games that are not specifically designed for AI research, and where humans play well, is crucial to benchmark agent performance. That is why we, along with our partner Blizzard Entertainment, are excited to announce the release of SC2LE, a set of tools that we hope will accelerate AI research in the real-time strategy game StarCraft II. The SC2LE release includes:
We'll crush the Koreans with our AI -- American Ingenuity!
Would love to see some crazy tournaments if this is successful. Or maybe just 2 AIs trying to adapt to each other over a long series. In any case, cool as shit
This is already a thing with starcraft 1 https://sscaitournament.com/
I wonder if the replays (https://github.com/Blizzard/s2client-proto#replay-packs) are a mix of all skill levels or only the higher end
Makes me wonder if a game like Starcraft 2 is solvable at all with so many variables

Most likely. there are a lot of variables but the AI will figure out the best few strats in a blink of an eye, and not human strats either, straight up number crunching, path times, resources and damage output.
Will be interesting to see them start to use new units and such in different places to react to the opponent AI that they wouldn't normally use though. Is the AI preloaded with all the unit and map data or does it have to figure it out?
AI researchers at my university have already been developing the equivalent of the
DeepMind AI but for Starcraft: https://www.newscientist.com/article/2143144-deepmind-dojo-will-train-ai-to-beat-human-starcraft-players/
It'll be interesting to see how quickly it starts improving once it starts playing against itself.
Yes, teach the Robots tactics and strategy, this will totally end well.

If they can access the internet they can already teach themselves
I wonder how could a high level AI stand up against a profesional Korean player

Watch the AI becomes a cheesy protoss cunt
Forget SkyNet, we BattleNet now.

Itd probably be an amazing zerg because of the multitasking
I wonder how could a high level AI stand up against a profesional Korean player
Well if it could play at least as well as a human (strategically), then it'd probably beat the shit out of the korean player. Imagine a 200/200 army where every single unit is micro-managed individually by the AI.
Glorious.

If they end up being Zerg I will cry
I, for one, will welcome our new robot overlords
Zerg would be the best choice for the ai, imagine the sheer amount of micro it would be able to do that a real zerg player wouldn't be able to.
