This is developing story. Please refresh for updates.A shooter is in custody after at least one person died and seven were reported wounded following a mass shooting at a Kentucky high school Tuesday morning.
"Tragic shooting at Marshall County HS,” Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin wrote on Twitter. “Shooter is in custody, one confirmed fatality, multiple others wounded … Much yet unknown."
The situation unfolded at around 8 a.m. at the school in Benton, Kentucky, about 170 miles west of Louisville. Armed officers escorted students out of the school and onto buses, where they were transported to North Marshall Middle School. Wounded students were airlifted to nearby hospitals. FBI agents and personnel from Louisville, as well as the ATF, were on scene to assist local authorities.
This country... It can't be reality...
A shame it happened really. I wonder if it was a student or an outside agent this time.
They captured the one responsible, isnt that a bit unusual? Don't they normally (from the shootings I see) commit suicide?
I wonder what the reason was for this, if there even was one. Its always terrible to see kids die from these things
There have already been 9 school shootings in 2018
Article now says two teens dead.

This seems implausible as we're 23 days into 2018. Could you please back this up with a source?

Thanks, the reason I was confused was because I misunderstood the definition of school shooting in the statistic.

Good that they caught him, maybe we'll fiind out why he did it.
I'm glad it happened, but isn't it statistically rare to take a shooter alive? as I understand it most kill themselves or choose death by cop, right?

Not to start a fight or anything, but, only one of those was a student shooting at a student at a sorority party. One was an unidentified person shooting into an office hitting nothing, The rest are suicides, including one from a non-student in a school parking lot while the school was closed, or accidental discharges, including one where the shot came from off-campus.
To say that "there have been 8 school shootings" is kind of not telling the whole truth when most of them are accidents or self inflicted suicides. You're intentionally misleading the reader because that paints a picture that there have been 8 mass shootings on school grounds, which is not true at all. In fact, taking a quick poke through past years on that site, this doesn't seem to be a change form the "norm." Not that these statistics are anything to be proud about, but I'd be willing to bet the rate of accidental discharges and gun-related suicides on school grounds don't vary wildly from other locations.
I'm sure you would agree someone killing themselves in the bathroom, or a fight at a college party resulting in a gunshot, is significantly different than a kid bringing a gun to school and shooting multiple people, right?

I think it highly depends on the situation. Was the shooting premeditated? Or was the shooter targeting one person and hitting others in crossfire? The shooter might've not had death in mind, etc, etc.

I took the quote from here before diving into Vox's source. But I agree with you.

Thats kind of an issue with the overall classification of "mass shootings". IIRC, a mass shooting is defined by 3 or more persons being shot in one instance. So because of that, a lot of mass shooting statistics are heavily skewed by gang shootings and other smaller instances.
Obviously you dont want to throw a shooting where 3 gang members were injured in a drive-by into the same category as something like Columbine or Sandy Hook. Or in this case, call negligent discharges "school shootings".
I was talking about this school shooting just now and I realized, how come these shootings usually happen in rural or suburban areas instead of urban areas?
I was talking about this school shooting just now and I realized, how come these shootings usually happen in rural or suburban areas instead of urban areas?
My assumption would be that urban areas have more experience with violent crime, and therefor have more programs in place for the prevention of violence and the urban community has a more acute perception for violence. A suburban or rural environment feels safer, so behavior that might be taken as a warning sign in an urban environment may slip through the radar in smaller communities.
Poverty is probably an influence as well, as troubled children from low income families are more likely to join gangs or other organized crime, while higher income troubled children tend to act independently. School shootings are usually the work of a small number of independent shooters, so they occur in locations that tend to produce that kind of mentality.
Right now we're at 2 dead, 17 injured, suspect in custody.
But the shooter was a 15 year old student. Chances are his motive was related to bullying or something else involving the school, since he allowed himself to be captured and arrested. But who knows - due to his age identity hasn't been released so we don't know about his home life and there's no for sure motive yet.
But if this is related to bullying, now's a good time to address "zero tolerance" and the bullshit behind it that allows kids to be bullied for years on end, and how he managed to get his hands on a handgun that was likely a family member's.

These are hardly school shootings. It's two suicides, a fight at a frat party and like 3-4 cases of bullets grazing a building.
It's rare that a shooter is captured alive, but somehow I doubt we'll glean much useful information as to the motivations of shooters since he's just a single data point.
He might be a single data point, but if the cause is bullying (which is likely) there needs to be a long, hard conversation with how schools and society in general deals with bullying.

I hope so. 'Cause with zero tolerance, the bully and the victim are punished equally despite the victim typically being 100% innocent - even when they don't enact self-defense, they are punished for being picked out. It makes no sense. Back when I was in high school I saw kids get punished FOR being beat up, and the person throwing the punches got off scott free because the victim tried to push them off right as an adult showed up. Counselors, teachers, and principles rarely even take it seriously when approached about bullying, and if they actually do, it just exacerbates the situation and makes the victim appear "weaker" to the bully. And when and if the bully gets punished, they get suspended for a few days; just like how officers get paid leave when clearly displaying brutality.
It's just a huge crock of shit.

Judging by his age, he'll spill the beans rather quickly. A mentally ill 15 year old probably has a whole lot to say that's been bottled up and they didn't get to say before going apeshit and shooting up their school.
He apparently ran out of ammunition and tried to flee. That's when he was arrested.
