"It is with great sadness we announce the death of Rebecca who died the June 18th, 2017 in an accident in the home," her family, including her husband, said in a statement on her Instagram account.
http://news.sky.com/story/french-fitness-blogger-rebecca-burger-killed-by-exploding-whipped-cream-dispenser-10923002 I wonder if her family could sue for this, but it certainly is a most unfortunate way to die. :frown:
I wonder if her family could sue for this, but it certainly is a most unfortunate way to die. :frown:
In most western nations pressurised vessels are required to be inspected and tested ever few years. If it was missing its test marks there's little you can do.
From the pic it definitely looks like it's a whipped cream dispenser you fill with whipped cream you make yourself and not a store bought one but I could be wrong since I don't live in France , what a terrible way to die from something so normal. Reminds me of shit like dying to a vending machine falling on you- fuck that. RIP

The timing of such an explosion would've been exactly to hit this small window, which is why she went into cardiac arrest.
What terrible luck. Whipped cream dispensers don't seem so volatile enough to actually kill.
its amazing how being hit in the chest at the right time can instantly kill you but you can literally get a metal through your entire torse, from the shoulder to the lower back and survive
The human body is really a weird thing with how contradictory it can be. And then you have guys like Phineas Gage who got impaled in the fucking head with a railroad tie. This is tragic and all, but that thing is called a "siphon" not a "whipped cream dispenser". Also how did the siphon fail? It's kinda hard to tell that anything at all happened from the picture.

I find this very ironic.
I find this very ironic.
I mean her name, her career choice AND the way she died....
So apparently these things are known to explode but this is the first time they kill someone. I think it's high time for a fucking recall.
So apparently these things are known to explode but this is the first time they kill someone. I think it's high time for a fucking recall.
Problem is they're a generic, mass produced thing There's hundreds of different brands selling them, most of them probably coming out of china, all varying in quality, recalling all of them would effectively be impossible
By my guess, the threads on the top section wore down or got loose and couldn't take the pressure, when she charged it, they blew apart and it happened to be aimed at her chest
Keep in mind that the small silver cylinder at the top of the picture is a pressurized CO2 canister like in old school seltzer bottles. Now imagine pumping enough CO2 into a closed bottle until the (plastic?) threads on the screw on top give in and it shoots up.
I didn't really think those pressured cans had enough pressure in to actually kill someone. Maybe she'd loaded up 5-6 and the dispenser couldn't handle the pressure of the final one?

Our body can be such an asshole.

They use nitrous for making whipped cream.
That is not a CO2 canister. They use nitrous for making whipped cream.
I stand corrected.
My dad has one of those things. It produces some really good whipped cream. Didn't think they could be that dangerous. Though anything with a compressed gas should be considered even a little bit dangerous.
I didn't really think those pressured cans had enough pressure in to actually kill someone. Maybe she'd loaded up 5-6 and the dispenser couldn't handle the pressure of the final one?
It didn't kill her with sheer force, it hit her and stopped her heart
Jesus I can't even imagine the odds for that to happen. The Wiki posted above says a normal cardiac cycle only has a duration of one second, so the odds of getting hit within that vulnerability window is like 1-3%. Coupled with the chances of the canister going off, coupled with the chances of it exploding close enough to the heart in the first place? It's insane
What if they are just too ashamed to admit what really happened?
What if they are just too ashamed to admit what really happened?
What? Doing whippets? That shouldn't stop your heart, plus medical examiners I assume looked at her and saw a bruised chest from it or something.
I wonder if her family could sue for this, but it certainly is a most unfortunate way to die. :frown:
Probably not. Apparently that model of whipped cream dispenser was recalled several years ago but only 25k of the 160k sold were ever returned.
I find this very ironic.
I didn't know alanis morissette had an fp account
What if they are just too ashamed to admit what really happened?
This is not only ignorant, but more importantly, it is incredibly insensitive.
I'm not sure what the pressure is of the small nitrous caplets, but the co2 versions are around 800psi
I didn't know alanis morissette had an fp account
Who and what's the idea behind that vague remark ?
What's especially unfortunate is that I first disbelieved this, thinking that this was some sort of just freakish event until I looked it up and saw how freakish it was, because there's this thing called "Commotio Cordis" hwere if you hit the heart violentlly enough, within a small window of time, it just stops. In my EMT book they even mentioned a case where someone died from a SNOWBALL hitting them in the chest and causing cardiac arrest. Check out the R on T phenomenon. It's pretty interesting and similar although that tends to be caused by a premature ventricular contraction at the wrong time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torsades_de_pointes
I'm taping some steel plates over my chest after reading this thread gotdamn
