Pope Francis ends sale of cigarettes in Vatican City, losing $11 million yearly revenue
VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis is saying “Just Say No” to cigarettes.
The Vatican announced Thursday that it would no longer sell cigarettes to employees in its duty free shop and supermarket — giving up an estimated $11 million a year in profit.
Francis made the decision because “the Holy See cannot contribute to an activity that clearly damages the health of people,” the Vatican said. A statement cited the World Health Organization, which says smoking causes more than 7 million deaths annually around the globe.
Francis is bringing Christians values back to the forefront. doing a better job at it than other Churches.
Good on him, man.
Why did the Vatican even sell cigarettes in the first place? Isn't that like, entirely against christian/catholic values?

Indirectly it is, that was probably enough for people to let it slide for money and practical historical purposes. Since smokers might visit from outside of the vatican at a time when everyone smoked.

being real, priests used to smoke a lot. I saw quite a bit of that at my grade school, the older priests and nuns smoked, i'm not sure it really was for some specific reason just that they all just did, and probably picked the habit up somewhere
guess you could say old habits die hard
Gonna go and guess that DaysBefore likes to smoke :v:

going to go out on a limb and say that smoking is more commonplace around the catholic world and the city is right in the middle of rome and staffed in large part by italians who all have less compuctions about smoking, christian or not. doesn't surprise me.

Americans don't use that term for them, it didn't even come to my mind.
The cardinals won't be happy with this.

Believe it or not, smoking was a common and even recommended thing until the 80s or so when people finally figured out smoking was bad for you.
Everybody smoked back in the day. Funnily enough, Hitler started one of the first anti-smoking campaigns
