Scandal-hit United Airlines is facing a new PR disaster — after a valuable giant rabbit died mysteriously on one of its planes.
Three-foot Simon, destined to be the world’s biggest bunny, died in the cargo section of a Boeing 767 after flying out of Heathrow to a new celebrity owner in the US.
Breeder Annette Edwards, of Stoulton, Worcs, said: “He was fit as a fiddle. I’ve sent rabbits round the world, nothing like this happened.” United’s reputation is at rock bottom after film of a doctor being dragged from a jet went viral.
Edwards, 65, said 3ft Simon, expected to grow to be the world’s biggest rabbit, and was healthy when placed in the cargo hold.
But Simon, heading to a new celebrity owner in the US, was found dead after the Boeing 767-300 landed at O’Hare — the airport where a doctor was violently dragged off a UA plane.

An airport source said news of Simon’s demise sparked a panic among UA staff, adding: “After the viral video no-one wanted responsibility for killing what was to be the world’s biggest rabbit.”
Guitars, doctors, rabbits, we'll break them all.
This is becoming beyond hilarious now.
"United Airlines: Unfit for the living" is not a good marketing image.

I'd say beyond pathetic than hilarious.
Holy shit United just can't catch a break from all these bad PR.
Well its obvious that loads of grade b journalists are just hanging around them like vultures just waiting to catch the "next juicy news" though.
The hare died at O’Hare.
what the fuck it's like a fucking DOG
Jesus christ, what kind of rabbit is that? Looks like some giant Desert Cottontail.
edit:
Ahhh okay, cont giant. Sorta like those agora/elephant rabbits that were breeded for fur, but these were bred for meat.

Welcome to Continental Giants, also known as German Giants. :v:
And the celebrity death counter keeps on ticking...
maybe the cargo bay was overbooked so they had to do what was right

Based on the CEO's double-down attitude that the doctor was "definitely belligerent", I'd say the potentially inaccurate tabloid journalism is well deserved.
I bet Malaysia Airlines is wiping their forehead about now.
I would suggest to hold off further opinions until we figure out what exactly happened.
I'm allowed to have an opinion at any time of day bud! And I say it's Obama's fault... he casts a wide net...
On a more serious note, the doctor did say he was very healthy before going on the flight. It's possible that an accident happened on the plane that could've happened on any airline, but it's still both hilarious and bizarre that it not only happened to happen on an UA flight, but also at the same airport as the starting disaster for their PR.
I want to know who the new celebrity owner was going to be

He may have appeared healthy but often rabbits can have underlying health issues that go unnoticed until it's too late (one of the reasons why they have such a high fatality rate under anaesthetic), plus they can be easily stressed and die from that. The continental is fundamentally flawed as rabbits were never supposed to be that big, and they've got to that stage from a certain degree of inbreeding, leaving them not the healthiest of rabbits.
I hesitate to blame the airline here as surely the flight itself, being so far from the rabbit's natural habitat, could be stressful enough to kill any rabbit. BBC quotes statistics giving a low rate of death among flying animals, however they don't break it down to individual species, I'd reckon that rabbits had a higher death rate than say dogs and cats, just because of their fragile nature.
I wonder if UA is gonna deny her refund.

Bunny! Noooooooo!
It happened at the same airport?!
What the fuck is going on over there?
Aren't rabbits very prone to stress? I can't imagine being stuck in the cargo section of a plane would be very comfortable

The owner of this one was quoted saying she'd sent loads of rabbits by air before with no issues. Guessing she is some kind of breeder or collector of bunnies.
United Air really ought to cut out those concentration camps in Chechnya - their PR is really suffering in recent weeks.

as a bunny owner i find that fairly disturbing
they're prey animals so they have a much stronger reaction to environmental stress, versus predator animals that get on the defensive but can handle the stress a lot better. plus they're a lot more sensitive to changes in the atmosphere/etc.

Indeed they are. They can also die easily if too stressed as it literally explodes their heart.

There is always the first for anything and I doubt that this rabbit was the first healthy one to ever die on an airplane due to stress.
I wonder if his size added to this, could have had more problems with the stress then your regular sized rabbit even if he was healthy.
This is obviously assuming there was no mistake in handling the animal and it was due to stress.
United Airlines might be shitty but from all the sudden bad news they could spill a glass of water and it would be picked up as a breaking news by some outlets it seems.

A friend of mine had this super calm pet rabbit, died of panic/heart attack on 4th of July, we didn't notice til morning cause we were all drinking in the other room
UNITED AIRLINES
MUST SHUTDOWN,
before anymore loss of life.
just scrap it man, its been good
let it die.
there's something amusing about the way the journalist wrote "destined to be the worlds biggest bunny" and "expected to grow to be the worlds biggest rabbit" in the article
