A man at an electronics store in China decided to give a smartphone battery his own litmus test by biting it. The battery ruptured and caused a small explosion. The spectacle, captured by the store’s CCTV security cameras, was uploaded to Miaopai, a Chinese video sharing platform similar to the now-defunct Vine. It has since garnered 4.69 million views.
According to Taiwan News, the man was in the store on January 19th to replace his iPhone battery. It’s not clear which store he was in, but the side of the shop has big characters that read “Professional screen change.” The man began to look closely at the battery and, to check if it was real, decided to bite down on it, triggering the explosion. Despite the fact that the blast was inches from the man’s face, and other onlookers, no one was reportedly injured.
Test failed.
I'm quite surprised about how reactive that was... I haven't seen batteries twice the size react as bad as that.
Why? Batteries aren't gold coins.
Laptop batteries are probably way bigger/more dense then phone/tablet batteries, how big would an explosion from one of them be?
The fact that no one was notably injured is a goddamn miracle. Would've expected a couple of lost teeth.
it looks like he took it out of his mouth a split second before it went off. absolute lucky fucker (still an idiot tho lol)

Guessing it was in a stronger container than batteries usually are, so it didn't get to release gases slowly

What? That's not how you check if something is a battery.

Unless they've changed things significantly since I last took one apart they almost always use 18650 cells which are quite a bit less dangerous due to their metal casing.

Depends on the chemistry. Cheaper ones still use nickel based cells and they generally won't go bang at all. The violence of a rupturing lithium battery tends to depend on its capacity, its C rating, and how charged it is at the time. The exact chemistry of the lithium cells will also have an effect on the angriness of the pixies contained within. Phones, laptops, et-al tend to use more mild chemistries(Li-ION, Li-Fe) whereas the more violent chemistries (LiPO) are usually only found in high draw devices like drills, RC vehicles, vapes, et-al.
You wouldn't want it to go off in your lap(It won't), but it'd be fairly mild by all measure. RC car batteries, conversely, can be positively violent.

:incredible:
I have a feeling he saw something about testing a battery by licking the contacts to feel a charge and mistook it for biting the top instead lol.
You can just make batteries explode like that? Why has no one tried to hijack a plane with one of them?
Why? Batteries aren't gold coins.
the guy probably wanted to look smart so he asked to see the battery so he could verify if it was real, got handed it, had the sudden realization of "wait shit i don't know what I'm doing" and in a panic went with the first 'fake test' that popped into his head (gold coins). truly a champ of awkward people everywhere
at least i hope that's what happened because the alternative is that there's an actual belief held by some people in China that biting is a good battery testing method lol.
At least I can sleep at night knowing this piece of news probably won't become the next 'tide pod challenge'.

NOBODY FUCKING MOVE OR I'LL BITE DOWN ON THIS BATTERY!!!
i don't think it's as intimidating as a knife or a gun

I mean, it worked pretty well to determine that the battery was real didn't it? It may not be a good test method, but it sure was effective.

not until the memesters PDP and the rest do it
You can just make batteries explode like that? Why has no one tried to hijack a plane with one of them?
I know you are joking but lithium batteries have caused a few plane crashes before. That's why they are no longer allowed to be shipped via air. Small quantities in electronics are normally fine because a small explosion isn't enough to bring down an aircraft. A large quantity in luggage is definitely a red flag.
so did biting it make it explode or was the battery going to explode anyways
so did biting it make it explode or was the battery going to explode anyways
Biting. Human bite can be very hard and the canine tooth are good at puncturing.
Doesn't take too much then to make a loaded battery go off.
Don't do stupid shit next time.
Or maybe do stupid shit, but alone in the safety of your own padded cell.

Everyone knows batteries and gold coins are pretty much the same thing

Their safety vent is at the positive pole, and yeah, they can handle more abuse before becoming dangerous.

More like fucking inedible.

Not quite correct. LiPo is used in low weight, odd size, and/or high draw, but they are rarely used in drills.
Drills use 18650 Li-Ion cells.
It probably wouldn't have exploded if kept biting down
cant wait for all the 'lithium battery challenge' news stories to succeed the tide pod trend
What? That's not how you check if something is a battery.
Of course it is. If it explodes, it's a real battery!
