hey guys (and the few girls) brothers and sisters, comrades and friends here's some my stuff cheers for having a look - I'll probably just update this thread with dump posts or at least a few images at a time, rather than every day or something like that. I haven't made this until now because I have a lot of trouble keeping my existing platforms maintained, but FP is where I began to take an interest in art a few years ago and I know loads of you, so I promise this thread won't die. - if you're into this stuff and want to follow me or just be as up to date as possible, the best place to go is my instagram - @drivemeawaytroubledheart the second best place to go is my tumblr - harmless-teeth.tumblr.com my IG has a lot more content from my sketchbook. - I teach/mentor on the side, via informal skype or hangouts sessions. if anybody is interested in doing that, you can let me know here. I'm most frequently asked to teach perspective and composition, but I'm happy to go over anything I feel I can help you with. unfortunately I don't have much room in my schedule at the time of writing, I have a handful of current students plus work and a tonne of other commitments. but you can let me know anyway and I'll tell you when a slot opens up. - I don't do commissions but if you have a really cool idea you can try your luck. I'm pretty fucking impressed man, very nice job. Also as someone who dreams to be a manga/anime artist but deals with depression and mood problems and can never keep up the practice, kudos to you. I envy people like you so much.
Nice. A lot of these drawings sorta look like Boulet's line art, which is pretty neat. http://bouletcorp.tumblr.com

I guess it doesn't really matter how many times you give up and stop. It only matters that you try again in the future.
Wow, you have learned a lot in the last few years. I'm interested to see more.
These are really cool. I'm noticing a lot of similar themes, is there a narrative that ties them all together or is it a style you're sticking to? Your figure drawings from your instagram are really impressive too!

I'm more or less just beginning to succeed at (or even play with) the full package of drawing scenes with whatever I want in them plus characters. so presently I'm trying for the most part to sound out a balance between finding a style that I really like, which is also quite simple and economical and fast to make storytelling with it feasible. it's tough but I'm getting somewhere, even since the above drawings I've gotten noticeably better. I don't even like most of those anymore lol, the artist's curse
I love your use of watercolor. How long does one of these sketches usually take you?
how much refs do you use for those? [editline]21st January 2017[/editline] ps - this thread needs more colors
i'm glad you finally started this thread. i love the complexity of some of your scenes, and i'm impressed by how detailed yet stylistically simplified they are. good stuff mako
Damn, this is awesome. Your artstyle on some of these reminds me a bit of Ian McQue's art.
I love your use of watercolor. How long does one of these sketches usually take you?
thanks. it's actually all ink and markers. they take a couple of hours I think - a lot of which is deciding how to fill spaces/compose, since it's mostly straight ink.
how much refs do you use for those? [editline]21st January 2017[/editline] ps - this thread needs more colors
I don't think I used reference for any of these but sometimes I will cast about for inspiration, find something cool and say oh yeah I'll put a variation of that in, and back to the sketchbook.
Damn, this is awesome.
i really like your art style man, ive been trying to progress slowly at drawing and want to do the same style since i prefer black and white are there any tutorials and books you followed when you started off, or did you just pick up a pencil and went with it?
thanks I actually started on facepunch, back when there was a subforum for art - that initial step I don't mind recommending, we still have a thread in GD - but to be honest it was a only couple of years after I took an interest that I began to take it seriously. there are some great resources for later on (and if I was going to I'd direct you to books rather than tutorials) but what is far more important is that cerebral step of taking it seriously, of committing to doing it for many hours each day even when it's frustrating or you want to play games instead. getting better at it is inevitable if you can discipline yourself that far. as for specifics when starting out, I advise a)looking up how to measure by eye, and drawing a thousand objects from life using this, b) go to life drawing sessions as often as you can (to draw nude models) and between them practice with photographs. here's a good site for that, there are others too: https://line-of-action.com/practice-tools/figure-drawing/
Your work looks so much like Kim Jung Gi, and I have so much respect for you for having reached this level of skill. To anyone wanting to get to this level, the only way you get there is through consistent discipline and learning how to be methodological in your approach. Again, full respect. edit: ffs you damn artists are all the same and laugh at me when I try to give a compliment. My best friend's an artist and can't stop laughing at my shit either. Christ mate
Hey Mako! lmao I remember you from the FixUpLookSharp thread when I used to frequent that thread, good times huh? I didn't know you were a great artist! This is really great stuff man, hope you're doing well.
hey haha yeah I remember you well, the ever-smiling chinese nice-guy who wore beige suits lol I wasn't an artist at all back then, that'd be why. I didn't know you took photographs, you've taken some nice stuff too.

I saw the thread and you reminded me of the fun times posting silly outfits. thought I'd stop by and see what you've been up to
The chunky flying boats is an aesthetic I can get behind.
The chunky flying boats is an aesthetic I can get behind.
I've loved the concept of non-futuristic airships for as long as I can recall, so mcque's design sensibilites are just too good not to draw from [editline]30th January 2017[/editline]

these city scenes are so cool and detailed while using (comparatively) so few lines. i love it
god damn this is a sexy thread keep it up fam, these are insane
god damn this is a sexy thread keep it up fam, these are insane
you're very kind
these city scenes are so cool and detailed while using (comparatively) so few lines. i love it
thanks - I thought I was using rather a lot of lines, I wonder what you're comparing them to?
thanks - I thought I was using rather a lot of lines, I wonder what you're comparing them to?
i guess i'm more saying that the areas with lots of lines are really well counterbalanced by huge places where there's nothing but the ink wash. some line-based pieces i've seen are very cool but are just hard to look at: these feel complex and alive without being a pain to view and being distractingly detailed
Awesome work, man. Care to talk about what you use? I'd be interested in what pens you work with, and maybe a bit about your process? If you sketch initially etc.
I come back in here whenever I need a good fap.
cheers
Awesome work, man. Care to talk about what you use? I'd be interested in what pens you work with, and maybe a bit about your process? If you sketch initially etc.
thanks - for most of these I used pilot hi-tec-c pen for the lines, and some crappy cheap markers for the tones. those pens are nice because they're really fine (you can get as low as .25mm) but if you don't like the scratchy feeling it might not be for you. also the ink is water soluble, which you can use to wash in shadows if care to, but it also means lots of unwanted bleeding if you're using watercolour for example. they're expensive, here at least, and they break very easily if dropped (the needlenose tip can't take even a tiny fall). of course the pen you use doesn't really matter but if you wanted precisely this line quality and the markers, I wouldn't recommend going for copics, knock offs will get the job done for the process, I usually work in straight ink, beginning with a focal point somewhere near the middle of the frame and then fleshing out the scene from there. I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do when I begin but sometimes I envisage something new as I'm working and start improvising. now and again I get a bit tight doing pen work so I grab a pencil to loosen up and draw in the remaining blank spaces - ditto if I'm not quite sure that I can pull off what's in my mind's eye in a certain section. but most of the time it's just the pen unless I'm putting characters in, I tend to sketch them first. I'd be happy to stream one but I don't have the setup for it..
As an architect (intern), I've always been curious when I see your sketches how important an architectural understanding is for you. Like, do you spend time looking at buildings and stuff in-between drawing or do you just look at references during? (or are you just naturally gifted lol?) I ask because you are quite successful at defining spaces & forms that are grounded and real feeling even though they are fictional / fantastic. Your style is very Akira-esque, which I'm sure you get a lot, but to me the success of Akira was largely the detail and impact of the environment. The city felt real and the story actually felt like it was bounded by it.
