Netflix Inc. announced today it acquired Millarworld, the comic book publishing powerhouse founded by Mark Millar, the legendary creator of such iconic characters and stories as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan, and one of the most important voices in comics. Together, Netflix and Millar will bring Millarworld’s portfolio of critically and fan-acclaimed character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to Netflix members globally. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix label. The acquisition, the first ever by Netflix, is a natural progression in the company’s effort to work directly with prolific and skilled creators and to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories featuring compelling characters and timeless, interwoven fictional worlds. Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed. “As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.” “This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”
Netflix press release
As long as we dont see an adaptation of Unfunnies, everything should be fine.
isn't netflix in mountains of debt?
Oh yes, Mark 'Booby-trapped Womb' Millar. Yaaaaay...
isn't netflix in mountains of debt?
Yeah and Apple is 100 billion dollars in debt. Yet they are one of the biggest trademarks in the world and atop the chain in electronic products. Debt for a company is very different from what is normal debt after all. Anyways, I hope we get a Kick Ass reboot, would have been cool.
How are those companies in debt?
Companies constantly accrue debt in order to finance further development and growth. Good companies can afford it fine, but they almost always have large accounts payable because it's lost time and potential otherwise. Calling it "debt," while technically true, is a little disingenuous.
How are those companies in debt?
They're spending a lot of money now to make a lot more money in the future. At least, that's the plan. It's kind of like taking a loan from the bank to start a small business. Yes, you are technically hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, but if your business is successful you still end up making more money than if you never took out the loan in the first place.
He has some good ideas, but the Hollywood changes of Kick-Ass, Wanted, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan are improvements over his crap. Also helps that the adaptations are done by competent directors too (see: Kick-Ass 2).
I kinda liked what the original Kick-Ass comic was going for over the movie with the whole idea that you must be really fucked in the head if you walk around in tights pretending to be a super hero, especially if you drag your little kid into it for no good reason. I don't really think Millar pulled it of in a fantastic way or anything but I prefer that setup over the movie where the main characters actions are portrayed as justified.
