Couldn't find a link in english, sorry http://www.phonandroid.com/facebook-snapchat-instagram-inscription-interdite-ados-de-de-15-ans-accord-parents.html
"Children under 13 won't be able to sign up at all, while children between 13 and 15 will need official documents to attest parental approval starting from May 2018."
So they need to submit official documentation? Must be quite the cost to get people to check the validity of these documents every time someone wants to sign up to a social media website. I am so glad social media wasn't a thing when I was a cringefest 13-year old.

I think it's most likely a mean of dissuasion. At least it might create jobs :freakout:
I imagine this is gonna be as effective as COPPA was Are you over 15? ☑
Lol, what a waste of time. All kids will do is claim they're over 15 and proceed.
its literally in the OP guys
its literally in the OP guys
Literally just set your birthday to over 15, it's that simple guy.
Literally just set your birthday to over 15, it's that simple guy.
True based on the one line in the OP Tho according to the article (through google) you still have to prove your identity if you claim to be above 15, with the systems used for poker and crypto purchases.
its literally in the OP guys
And if you don't require offical documentation if you above 15, then this point moot. You can then just say you are over 15 and it all goes away.
its literally in the OP guys
"Are you over fifteen?" "Yes" "No documents are needed then." That's exactly how it will go down.
I imagine this is gonna be as effective as COPPA was Are you over 15? ☑
I wonder what it felt like being the first person to fool that system. "wow, what an outlaw!"
And if you don't require offically documentation if you above 15, then this point moot. You can then just say you are over 15 and it all goes away.

"Are you over fifteen?" "Yes" "No documents are needed then." That's exactly how it will go down.

Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram: mandatory parental agreement for children under 15 A teenager who is not at least 15 years old will no longer be able to register on a social network without the consent of his parents or legal guardians, whereas the registration will remain strictly forbidden for teens in under 13 years old. To do this, new registrants will have to justify their identity with official documents, a system already used on certain sensitive services (poker sites or cryptocurrency transactions for example).
that indicates otherwise
that indicates otherwise
No it doesn't. No where does it say there they will require everyone using social media to positively identify themselves and prove their age.
No it doesn't. No where does it say there they will require everyone using social media to positively identify themselves and prove their age.
What do you think "justify their identity with official documents" means
its literally in the OP guys
You have any idea how many sites think I'm over a hundred years old? Those age checks do NOTHING to stop underage users.
What do you think "justify their identity" means
The "select your age" dropdown on many websites is classed by companies themselves as justifying your age, the same way that a checkbox indicates that you've read the terms and conditions and fully understand what you're going into
The "select your age" dropdown on many websites is classed by companies themselves as justifying your age, the same way that a checkbox indicates that you've read the terms and conditions and fully understand what you're going into
Yeah, I shouldn't have cut the rest of the sentence. A checkbox probably isn't counted as official documentation here however. If so then yeah, that's kind of a pointless term (or a startlingly bad translation)
The original article does say 'official documentation', I don't know how you could construe that as a simple checkbox.
neopets used to do this, you'd just set ur date of birth back about 10 years
just don't do what i did and set it to a year you can't remember
just don't do what i did and set it to a year you can't remember
Yes yes, I was born on April 20th, 1900
neopets used to do this, you'd just set ur date of birth back about 10 years
I remember printing out the parental permission form and faxing it over to them, I was so excited.
I remember printing out the parental permission form and faxing it over to them, I was so excited.
i remember doing this but never heard back from them so for the next 3 years i didn't get to play neopets until i figured out you could just bullshit your age online. [editline]10th February 2018[/editline] i don't know how they would get around kids putting in fake dates of birth with this system though.
These things are as effective as using gladwrap as a condom
What the headline is: If you're under 15 your parents need to provide official documentation before you can use certain social media sites. What the headlines should be: You're now required to provide official documentation to prove who you are to use social media. Isn't that a bit worrying? Granted I don't know French so I can't read the original article to verify how the system works, but if it works how it seems suggested to work then an effort to stop the underage from signing up for social media sites is being used to push forward an online IDing system for something that shouldn't need it. It can't really be any other way without being totally impotent could it? If you don't have to provide ID if you say you're 16 and up, then children will just put their age down at 16 and up so they don't have to have their parents provide ID, basically just making the system "work" the same way it does now.

I like how everyone insisting that "they can just check a box LOLOLOL" disappeared the moment an actual French person came and confirmed that yes, the article does indeed say "official documentation", and no, a fucking drop-down menu on a website obviously isn't "official documentation".
