At least 11 people died when a severe thunderstorm hit the Russian capital Moscow, health officials say. Hundreds of trees were toppled by the storm, and more than 50 people sought medical help. Reports say that electrical cables were damaged as Moscow was lashed with high winds, hail and torrential rain. The winds of up to 110 km/h (70 mph) were described by meteorologists as extremely rare for the city, and caused structural damage to buildings. If the death toll of 11 is confirmed - and some officials give a lower figure - it would be the deadliest storm in the city for more than 100 years. The city's investigative committee said that "hurricane winds" had caused trees to fall in various parts of the city, killing five pedestrians. An elderly man was also killed at a bus stop, it said. TASS news agency says that 69 people have been injured. Two people were killed after a tree fell onto their summer house, Interfax reported.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40086616
Shit was pretty crazy
This is only going to get worse as time goes on. NOAAs already calling for much stronger and more numerous hurricanes this season
Finnish news site reports 13 deaths. Must have been one crazy storm, I would have been terrified if I were there as I have a mild astraphobia.
Jesus, stay safe out there guys
This is only going to get worse as time goes on. NOAAs already calling for much stronger and more numerous hurricanes this season
Hurricane force winds are unrelated to actual hurricanes. And Russia is not affected by the Atlantic hurricane season. On rare occasions, Russia can get hit by Pacific Typhoons. This seems to be the result of a heavy thunderstorm. Which, will debatably increase with time depending on region. NOAAs estimate is a range that goes from below average to high above average. Other estimates are average or slightly above average. It's important to realize climate change isn't going to have the same effect throughout the world. An increase in hurricanes doesn't necessarily mean an increase in bad storms in other places. It's like how a city can have a record cold year while the global average is record hot.
Are our Russian facepunchers safe? Any pictures of the aftermath?
