Marvel Cancelled Fantastic Four Comics Over Film Rights
”I think it’s pretty common knowledge at this point that Marvel isn’t publishing Fantastic Four because of their disagreement with Fox,” Hickman explained.
"We knew a year or so out that the Fantastic Four as a property wasn't going to be published at Marvel past 2015," Hickman explained of their last appearance in Secret Wars.
Finally, someone finally has the balls to say it to everyone's faces.

Actually, wouldn't surprise me Jeff Lemire pitched a book to the higher ups, they shot it down, and he went over to DC and gave him the book he wanted with their characters (Mr. Terrific, Plastic Man, Metamorpho, Phantom Girl)
What a way to end one if the oldest and most famous comic series. I'll bet there's a lot of unhappy people on the internet today.
Imagine willingly refusing to produce content of a property you own literally everything to besides movie rights, sacrificing potential sales in comics, merchandising, cartoons, and video games, because you're mad about movie rights.
And not just any property, but Marvels First Family, the book that essentially birthed Marvel properly.

To be frank I would say since Avengers: Disassembled (so around 2004 or so) and Ike Perlmutter gutting editorial (2007? 09? Can't remember) it's been downhill ever since.
Ike Perlmutter's pettiness never ceases to amaze me. Too bad that Hickman probably burned bridges by publicity confirming this.

To be fair, Sony has devalued the property significantly in the eyes of non-comic book reading, movie going consumers and hell, even some comic book fans who wanted to perhaps look into the universe with how many fucking horrible movies they've released, plus comics barely make up marvels "potential sales" these days and fantastic four merchandising, cartoons and video games weren't coming, or were a commercial failure, in that they weren't selling well because of the failures of the movies poisoning the well.

Hickman has plenty of connections still. He's done plenty with Image, has a book with Avatar, and have written some of the best recent Marvel stories of the past decade.
Although, if Marvel is as petty as he says....

Fox, also different demographics for different mediums.

iirc that was actually mostly just a huge excuse to shitcan them when they were doing decently well.
Way better than like, 60% of their current lineups anyway.
Like Captain "On my 4th #1 issue in 5 years" Marvel.
I'm kind of glad Marvel isn't making anymore Fantastic Four comics. Marvel's been taken over by SJWs so all they would do is ruin family.

Are you implying there's something wrong with Sue storm leaving Reed for Black woman Ironman? That's sexist... Or racist... One of 'em.
Y'all gotta admit that movies can affect comic sales. I'm sure the MCU sparked a bigger interest in the comics.
So imagine what the Fantastic Four is doing the comics? Fox putting out bad movies isn't helping the comic and the characters even if they are different

Actually, Marvel repeatedly failed at capitalizing on movies and is bleeding consumers like crazy, while DC (with one good movie in DCEU) is effectively crushing it in actual sales.

You would think. Marvel continues to punish the LCSes for their fuckups and charging buttloads for hack writers like Brian Michael Bendis to soapbox for 20 pages.
Marvel is only making more money through their old trades instead of the newer stuff.
what do you fear?
The bad writing these hacks do.

The worst thing about the FantFour film is that they aren't even interested in the IP
they literally just made the film so they could keep the rights

Y'know if the creators just shaved like the first 3 panels off due to being the same artwork three times they could just save more pages for more content and not kill a joke. Seriously why just repeat the same panel like it's some awkward pause in a sitcom?
This news isnt surprising. I dropped reading marvel comics a long time ago due to the movies utterly ruining my favorite comic team (look at my title). Movies were good, but jamming in movie bullshit fucking ruined the comics forever.
Fuck comic books.
-bobby you're gay-
God that was horrible. It goes beyond that one page too. It was like, what, 4 to 6 pages dedicated to her just forcing him to think hes gay (when hes actualy not).

Who did this and where can I find them?
I promise I won't hurt them, honest.
it's a powerplay. they want to kill all interest in F4 (not that Fox's most recent effort did anything to dissuade that) so that they can get Fox to share production rights in the same way Sony has. Making F4 comics at this point would just make more consumers want to go see more F4 movies, because there will always be a large crowd of people willing to throw money at it
[editline]7th August 2017[/editline]
Plus i'm sure the money lost from not doing the books will be more than recouped should they ever get the rights to actually make their F4 movie

Yeah but thats also really stupid and doesnt work.

Like they tried the same thing with X-Men and if anything the movies have been picking up speed.

Brian Michael Bendis. There's no way to stop him now.

well that's because they got actual creators and good directors, writers, actors, etc to build up a little X-men universe. They can hang on to the rights for F4 as long as they want (I'd honestly be very surprised if they made another one in 6 years just to keep the rights considering how much of a public facing shitshow the 2015 movie was), but they will probably never be able to make F4 as profitable as X-men or any MCU film unless they stop faffing about, or bite the bullet and play nice with Disney

Marvel Studios and Marvel Entertainment are separate companies under Disney due to a direct request to Bob Iger from Kevin Feige.
Not entirely sure how it works but its not like they control MS' movies either.

I meant as overall revenue going directly to the Disney company

I mean, yeah obviously.
But also, the idea that killing the brands representation in comics, cartoons, merch, or games will actually impact the movies is completely asinine. Its losing them money they could be getting in addition to potential movie money in the future.

I feel they wouldn't have killed it off if they felt the hit would have been irreconcilable? I mean even going back to records from 2014, F4 was barely pushing 60k sales a month between two comics combined. as compared to spiderman which sold 101k of ASM, 87k of SSM, and 66k of a oneshot. Overall it just seems like they don't really care much about how much MC brings in on the whole, honestly
