On Friday, Billy McFarland, the 25-year-old founder of the disastrous Fyre Festival, told his shell-shocked employees that their paychecks covering the past two weeks would not be coming. Nor would he be firing them, a prerequisite for unemployment benefits in most states. Instead, McFarland offered to allow his dozen-or-so employees to stay on in unpaid roles, where they could work to grow the business to a place where they might get paid again. The meeting, audio of which was obtained by VICE News, wrapped up weeks of uncertainty for the employees of Fyre Media, the company behind Fyre Festival, whose primary job had been building a celebrity and talent booking app the festival was intended to promote. Rapper and Fyre Media co-founder Ja Rule was on the grim conference call, but his role was that of a listener. “I’m on the phone but I can barely hear you all because of this fucking hum,” Ja Rule said. McFarland kicked off the meeting by cutting to the chase: nobody would be getting paid, but they were free to keep working regardless. “After conferring with our counsel and all financial people, unfortunately we are not able to proceed with payroll,” McFarland said. “We’re not firing anyone, we’re just letting you know that there will be no payroll in the short term.”
https://news.vice.com/story/audio-fyre-festival-founders-reveal-to-employees-nobodys-getting-paid There's a audio recording of the conference call in question in the link, it's private so I can't seem to get it to properly embed but here's a direct link.
The nerve of that guy. The treatment of huge amounts of workers in the US is already a reprehensible mess, and he isn't even considering them workers. You actually have to pay workers. “I understand this is not an ideal situation for everybody”, he says. I wouldn't hold it against any of the employees if they decided to lynch him on the spot.
pls put out the fyre...

Maybe should have saved some of that model and instagram advertisement money on actually paying your employees. Nah fuck 'em, they don't really matter. /s
Didn't JaRule tweet that he donated the profits to charity? How about using that money to pay the staff, instead?
If I was listening to this shit as an unpaid employee, I wouldn't let poor old little Billy finish his sentence without firmly voicing the objective facts of how fucking terrible a human being he is

they have like 4 lawsuits on their heads right now, and they want more?
Uncompensated non-volunteer work is a great way to get the US DOL to fuck you up.
This guy sounds like a GTA character, holy hell.
can we point out this quote more please
Anyone who stays on at this point deserves everything that happens to them.

Nor would he be firing them, a prerequisite for unemployment benefits in most states.
To be fair, he said at around 5:15 into the sound clip "If you need to be let go in order to claim benefits, we will do that." It's still a shitty position to put employees in, but it's not like he's saying "Keep working or forgo your unemployment"
I'm not sure how US law works, but I imagine the staff can't be fired without wrongdoing on their part, which means the correct procedure would be forced redundancy, resulting in Fyre having obligations regarding redundancy payouts. I might be wrong though. This absolutely sounds like this guy is just trying to avoid losing more money that he probably doesn't have by taking advantage of workers who don't know their rights. I kinda feel bad for him - as a 25 year old he's probably just trying to live a dream of being s big festival organisers where people come to have a great time. The big promises and bigger let downs while having a big public image aren't things real conmen do. Sounds like money was mismanaged due to inexperience and he's just digging himself a hole
Good thing this would be considered fired in all states. The DOL is gonna have fun with this guy
That's fairly common here, you'll often seen company's hiring people for experience rather than pay.
I mean I don't know US Labor law, but I'm pretty sure you can't downgrade employee salaries, so he can either let them all go or get fucked for outstanding paychecks even longer than they can already claim.
That's fairly common here, you'll often seen company's hiring people for experience rather than pay.
Except these people were hired under the agreement that they were going to be paid for their work. Hopefully this prick gets fucked over in a lawsuit for pulling this.
can we point out this quote more please
This reads like one of those AnCap memes.
If I was in that situation I'd just start destroying / stealing whatever's left to be honest
