NEW YORK -- The drug cartel boss known as "El Chapo" promises he won't have any jurors from his upcoming federal trial killed. A lawyer for "El Chapo," whose real name is Joaquin Guzman, filed a motion asking the jurors not be kept anonymous or under armed guard. Such special measures, he argues, send the message to the jurors that Guzman is dangerous and guilty and they need to be protected from him. Best thing to do would be to ignore him and keep them under armed guard anyway, there's no way to tell if he's bluffing or not.
"filed a motion asking the jurors not be kept anonymous or under armed guard." ahahah yeah fucking right. is he gonna follow it up with another motion requesting a list of their home addresses and what times they're most likely to be home alone??
A lawyer for "El Chapo," whose real name is Joaquin Guzman, filed a motion asking the jurors not be kept anonymous or under armed guard.
Yeah because that will toooootally happen [editline]26th January 2018[/editline] 'sorry uh judge, but would you mind not protecting the jurors? i need to know where they are so i can pick em off with a sniper'
And if the Taliban or Isis or what have you promised not to try and assassinate the president then I'm sure we'd start doing open top car parades again.
I don't know as a lawyer how you can ask this sort of thing in any sort of good faith.
Those drug cartels are disgusting [editline]25th January 2018[/editline] I'll never forget some of the stuff they put on the Internet. Lordy [editline]25th January 2018[/editline] scary ass motherfucker looks like escobar's hippo [editline]25th January 2018[/editline] especially his eyes. Damm
Such special measures, he argues, send the message to the jurors that Guzman is dangerous and guilty and they need to be protected from him.
This is a legitimate concern But I doubt he's going to get it, and he probably shouldn't either.
I'd started to wonder if he actually thought this would work, but then I suppose it's not quite sunk in that this thin veil of a wolf in sheep's clothing charm doesn't work anymore for him. He's pretty screwed.
What if the judge is under his payroll and accepts the proposal?
:snip: Actually it wouldn't work. Armed guards or no, their safety couldn't be guaranteed without anonymity. That terrorist organization is behind plenty gruesome murders.
Yeah they're better armed than the bodyguards too. They'd just plow right through the guards if they knew who to go after.
Uh, speaking of all of this, has anyone heard from Sean Penn lately? He doin' all right?

That said, better safe than sorry, right? New York is a long way from the border, but I'm sure the cartel could still get to them.

Will the trail be swayed because of this? Probably. Does it matter? Not really. If you want to have a fair trial when you commit a crime, make sure that you don't have a long long history of (convicted!) violent association with cartels.

He should honestly be forced to have a trial by judge. Criminals who are high-profile enough to pose a threat to jurors and witnesses should be treated differently by the court systems.
He should honestly be forced to have a trial by judge. Criminals who are high-profile enough to pose a threat to jurors and witnesses should be treated differently by the court systems.
This is unconstitutional Well, it can happen, but aside from getting the government and court to approve, he has to approve it too. Aka not gonna happen.
He should honestly be forced to have a trial by judge. Criminals who are high-profile enough to pose a threat to jurors and witnesses should be treated differently by the court systems.
That requires decision, and humans make bad decisions.
He should honestly be forced to have a trial by judge. Jokes on you, he's actually going to pay off the jurors. This is just a distraction. :tinfoil:
He should honestly be forced to have a trial by judge.
I don't know as a lawyer how you can ask this sort of thing in any sort of good faith.
The lawyer is probably scared for their life right now. Would you say no to a man who is in charge of a cartel?
The lawyer is probably scared for their life right now. Would you say no to a man who is in charge of a cartel?
Yes. This trial is very public. Even if I were murdered to death this man would still die and his organization would have a large target painted on it there after.
The lawyer is probably scared for their life right now. Would you say no to a man who is in charge of a cartel?
Not sure about this lawyer, but in the other's AMA they were actually very excited to work with El Chapo, and said that he had interviewed multiple other people before picking him. And with how defense attorneys are, I wouldn't even say that this is likely being done in bad faith.
