20% of international beef trade vanishes as India bans cattle export.
India, which accounted for 20 per cent of all the beef exported in the world last year, is dealing with tough new rules by the Government that ban the sale of cattle, including cows and buffaloes, for slaughter across the country.
The decision will have huge ramifications for beef markets around the world, including Australia.
"It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that they're going to push to ban the sale of any cattle for slaughter," market analyst Matt Dalgleish, from commodities firm Mecardo, said.
"So they are only looking at allowing dairy cattle and cattle for farm use."
The ban on the slaughter and sale of cattle in India has been described as a move by the Indian Government to appease Hindu conservatives.
Australian farmers are going to be happy. I wonder what India will do with all their cows now.
I know it's a move that's just to make religious people happy but I wouldn't mind seeing some restrictions in the west too since beef is a really wasteful and ecologically expensive source of food.
Although I'd probably just propose a sin tax instead of an outright ban. Because hell, I'd be lying if I admitted to not enjoying a good steak every once in awhile.

Worship them? :excited:
Probably, but I think they may have a few too many now.
Nature will take its course and turn it into a sustainable population with magic
oh and dyings but yeah
So they've basically made there cows mostly useless and a burden on the economy.

Well, a good chunk of them probably already were, but yeah.
This is how the cows take over and actually become gods in india.
They don't worship cows, they're just heavily respected for the many uses they have. What use does a cow have other than eating it and drinking its milk?
Mankind domesticated it for food for a reason :v:

Fertilizer is a reason as well, but cows were mainly used and valued for ploughing purposes in India. Because farmers depended on them for a harvest, they were an integral part of the family in that way as a sort of giving mother figure. So killing cows for meat in Indian culture is akin to killing an elderly family member as soon as they become too old to work and provide for the family.

Eh, I am actually at least vaguely aware of the intricacies of the situation due to having attended a few courses about Indian culture, but the joke was too good to pass up.
(Also, eating meat is less 'sinful', per se, spiritually unclean describes it better.)

I'm guessing that since they use cows, horses aren't as common in India as it was other places that use them for that purpose?

Not entirely sure on this but I assume it's because horses were more associated with transportation and war. Plus cows were cheaper, produced dairy, and had more endurance as a working animal
There must have been alot of beef trading during the east/ west coast rivalry.

We really should move away from beef toward healthier alternatives like more poultry and fish, as cattle livestock are a horrendously large contributor to the amount of greenhouse gases being created by the actions of mankind, with some reports claiming as much as one-third of all methane being released into the atmosphere being just from cows. Emu (which has similar qualities to beef) in particular is heavily undertapped despite attempts being made in western nations over the past two decades to make it more common.
Heck, an unpopular opinion and one that will be difficult to convince people about, but we really should look more into the potential of invertebrate raising for nutrition despite the western stigma, as many insects are highly nutritious and very efficient, which could also help fight against world hunger in areas that struggle to have enough protein.

beef isn't much more unhealthy than poultry and fish at all
a very tiny and insignificant number of people die or suffer from medical conditions related to eating red meat, and typically in those cases it is among gluttons who stuff themselves full of red meat constantly and have other warning signs due to taking poor care of themselves

If it was that easy, we'd be doing it. Overfishing fucks up ecosystems pretty bad.

You could say that about a countless amount of things that we currently do not attempt because people overall are complacent and resistant to change. Cattle also destroy ecosystems pretty terribly and are highly responsible for desertification.
In regards to overfishing, I am well-aware of the consequences, but also believe not enough is being done to handle and invest toward the farm-raising of fish since it tends to be so much easier for companies to just obtain them from wild populations at the moment, with very little futureproofing going on in that regard.
Awesome I can't wait for beef prices to jump because of some stupid appeasement of a religious group.

No worries, the US just made a beef export deal with China a couple weeks ago, we're going to get rich
