The new series of Doctor Who will see the Time Lord joined by his first openly gay companion.
Bill Potts's sexuality will be revealed pretty much straightaway in her second line of dialogue when the show returns to BBC One on 15 April.
"It shouldn't be a big deal in the 21st Century. It's about time isn't it?" Pearl Mackie, who plays Bill, told the BBC.
"That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show."
She added: "It's important to say people are gay, people are black - there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them.
"I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important."
I look forward to the day when this sort of thing isn't a news story.

I imagine that during the 50's/60's/etc when blacks were starting to actually become equals in film and TV that the same thing happened with them (Albeit in way different light)
this is a side effect of a good thing
"Bill’s gay and it shouldn’t be a big deal."
*proceeds to make a big deal out of it*
You had one job
Doctor Who has generally been pretty progressive since the reboot, hasn't it?
That's cool. It's good to see television's starting to resemble real life more often.

I guess if you were a woman named "Bill" you'd probably be gay too.
Hopefully, being gay isn't the only character trait for this companion.

As usual moffat wants to take credit for everything, even though RTD did most of this shit long before him without even making it a big deal.

This is sensual headlines buddy. Somewhere deep down you know this is exactly why you came here.

Yes, yes. Keep telling yourself everything is down to Moffat's ego. Notice how there are no quotes from Moffat in the article at all? Almost as if the BBC is reporting on this themselves.

He's the best reoccurring character of DW.

I've longed for him to re-appear and act as a companion to the doctor since the 11th.
It's made pretty explicit that Jack isn't gay, he's bi- (or more accurately, omni/pan)sexual. The explanation was that in the 51st century, sexual reproduction was no longer needed to make children, so sex had purely become something people do for fun- this is also why he's such a flirt.
There's also the fact that Jack, whilst a reoccurring character, was never a mainstay 'companion' so to speak so much as somebody who showed up in a few different episodes. Bill will be a consistent companion for at least this entire series.

Why did it change to "Sensual" Headlines anyway?
Is it for April Fool's Day?

You realize Moffat created Jack as a character, he was the one who wrote the first episodes he appeared in
You realize Moffat created Jack as a character, he was the one who wrote the first episodes he appeared in
Not true, Jack was RTD's idea, he just chose Moffat to be the one to write his first episode.
But he wasn't a companion. "Companion" in Doctor Who refers to a female mary sue with no character who travels with the Doctor for no reason.
Harkness was an actual character.
Don't worry, she won't have any character traits.
But but Adric

I guarantee you Rusty just told Moffat "make him attractive and funny and gay like me!!!"

Well, to be fair, he was never a companion. There's been plenty of non-hetero characters in Doctor Who. That lizard chick's a lesbian, if I remember correctly, and she's as much of a companion as Jack ever was.
I stopped watching Who shortly after the switch to Capaldi. I was already tired of it halfway through Smith's run, mostly because of the writing, but even with Capaldi's excellent portrayal of the Doctor I just couldn't stomach the writing anymore. Long overdue to move on to a new writer - Moffat makes phenomenal one-off concept episodes, but he tries to cram so much overarching plot into a short season, half of which is monster-of-the-week episodes only tangentially related to that main plot, that you're just left wondering who the fuck the baddies are and why they matter at all.

He's also not gay, he's pansexual to an extreme degree.
Cap there will fuck anything, anyone, anywhere, for any reason. He is the most literal interpretation of "if it has a will, its fuckable"

I made it entirely through the Smith episodes and watched a few Capaldi episodes. I couldn't shake the feeling that I had the new episodes before (hell, I was feeling that on some of the last few Smith episodes too). Moffat had a good run when he was fresh blood, but it's clear he's already brought everything he had to bring to the show. The show needs new blood, badly.
I was disappointed, since it seems like Capaldi has so much potential to be memorable and impactful, but it just felt tired from the get-go.

Jack actively traveled with the 9th Doctor and Rose in the TARDIS, that makes him a companion in my eyes.

I'm also looking forward to the day where you don't get called a bigot for saying "who cares if this character is gay".
I guess Doctor Who needs to try and get attention somehow since their viewer rating has taken a nose dive since David Tennant

I keep seeing this diagram.
Add "Does it stand on two legs?" to it and I can accept it.
So is this going to be a case of her saying or mentioning she is gay once or twice with her sexuality being only a smaller factor of her character or is it going to be her stating it at least once every episode in the least natural and human ways possible?
