EXCLUSIVE: Chris Columbus has signed on to write, direct and produce Blumhouse’s screen adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s popular video game Five Nights at Freddy’s, which centers on a security guard battling animatronic robots that come to life in a Chuck E. Cheese-like venue.
Blumhouse landed Five Nights at Freddy’s last March when movie rights were put in turnaround by New Line. Every genre filmmaker wanted it, but Blumhouse landed the property because producer Jason Blum won the allegiance of creator Cawthon. Columbus is repped by WME.

Cawthon will produce alongside Columbus and Blumhouse’s Blum.
except this is actually the 2nd time. they were already making one awhile ago with some small-time horror director which is what makes sense. i even remember him tweeting out progress on the practical effect animatronics. i stopped following it so idk what happened but then out of nowhere today, Blumhouse, a very legit horror production company that makes straight up horror films, instead hires Chris Columbus, a guy that makes goofy kids movies, to start the whole thing over. this is so weird, idk what to even expect the tone of the final film to be but clearly they're not going for super serious horror anymore lol
If done properly it could be good. But it probably isn't.
I thought there was already one in the works. Creature Shop was making the animitronics.

Honestly, i'm interested to see how this will work, nice to see they have a decent director on board for it. Plus didn't they say a while back animatronics would be practical ?
Oh yeah, here it is.

Well if you're looking for a cash cow, you can do worse series.
The only thing that pisses me off about this is that it'll increase the amount of fnaf 'content' in the source filmmaker workshop.
Go ahead and try looking through the most recent list on the workshop. There's 1 thing related to it on almost every page going Months back.

Chris Columbus hasn't directed a good movie since Harry Potter 2 (his latest 'hit' was Pixels, and before that the super-forgettable Percy Jackson lol) and he hasn't written a good movie since The Goonies and Gremlins films (but he RARELY writes anymore. the only recent thing he did was Christmas with the Kranks, so yea lol) but Blumhouse pretty consistently produces good horror films. At the same time tho Christoper Columbus doesn't even make serious horror films so it's such a weird combinations and I have no idea what to expect.
don't read the title of this article out loud it's a curse that summons vengeful spirits

that's the old director talking about the old incarnation of this that he was set to make. that shit is obsolete now. I wouldn't put it past them to do practical again for at least when they're stationary, but they're gonna go CG for any time they're attacking I'm sure lol. Columbus' last few films were total CG fests, so yeah.
Guess I'll die then huh
Just ignore the movie, it's safer than dying.
Slightly coughing blood here, I mean I'm a little bit more disappointed that its not Undertale but yeah.
Honestly fuck it I hope he's getting paid well because I loved the the first harry potter movie and home alone.

It can't possibly be worse than a movie about fucking emoji

They're totally going for the merchandising angle now. Can't sell toys of all the animatronics if your movie is too scary for most kids.
If I wasn't aware what FNAF was, or anything about the production, a horror movie about animatronics coming to life and being trapped inside the building could make for an interesting premise.
But how you can possible spin it into an entertaining movie I don't know. Seems more suited to a goosebumps episode or something. Two games was more than enough in the first place.

Right yeah that actually makes perfect sense.
God this is gonna be cringey. Like yeah at the end of it all it -could- be a fun movie, but they're still making a kiddy version of what was originally a fucked-up horror story about a child murderer, kids getting accidentally crushed by machines, and various people getting ripped to shreds by metal animatronics. None of that really says "Chris Columbus movie material" to me lol but I guess it is still aimed at the games main target audience, regardless of its content
I'm still amazed at how popular FNAF became. I saw a fucking calendar for it in a christmas shop last year.

Chris Columbus was also a producer on the Night at the Museum series, which has similar 'night watchman finds things come alive after dark' themes.

I still don't really understand why FNAF has such a big fanbase among young 'uns.
imagine seeing this headline in august 2014 when a small little horror game was released on desura made by one man who previously only made christian themed video games with off putting 90s styled CGI.

I think it's almost entirely to do with youtubers, specifically markiplier.
I'm only interested in this to see how they use practical animatronics tbh.
If they use CGI then they can just fuck right off.

Some of the merch is bizarre too.
At my local EB Games, they had a FNAF "Frightlight" for sale. Literally a branded flashlight with an optional "scare mode" where it'd randomly jumpscare you by playing a loud noise and projecting an image of one of the animatronics in the light.

I read that as "fleshlight" and was very confused what spooky fleshlight would be like.
... I actually don't wanna know, nvm
Honestly say what you will about the games, but they are one hell of a success story. And Scott is a genuinely good guy who donates tons of cash to charity.
