Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) Will Not Have Season Pass
Star Wars Battlefront II won't feature a season pass, developer DICE has confirmed.
Battlefront II creative director Bernd Diemer confirmed the absence of a season pass in an interview with Mashable. "We don't want to segment our community," he said with regard to why the team opted to forgo a season pass.
Upon looking back at how Battlefront changed over time following its launch in 2015 with the addition of DLC, Diemer said the team came to the conclusion that "for this type of game, season passes are not the best thing" and they need to "come up with something better."
Good riddance.
I hope people don't preorder this either. EA needs to learn their lesson.
The Battlefield/Battlefront method of DLC severely segments the community. The vanilla experience is always around but if you don't get in on the DLC's as soon as they are released they die quick, and go practically extinct as soon as the next DLC in the season pass comes out.
Instead they'll charge $120 for the game rather than $60 plus another $50 for the season pass.
I'm sorry, but this is EA we're talking about.
I'm not holding my breath for EA not using money-milking strategies with map DLCs like they always do. They might not call it a season pass anymore because of the negative reaction towards the phrase, but don't you worry.
They are probably gonna go towards the Overwatch model, free content updates to draw players in to buy loot boxes instead.

God I hope so. There's nothing I love more than the feeling of video game corporations just ravaging my wallet hole of all my cash so that I can have the complete, girthy experience of their game.
they'll probably have loot crates or whatever
some kind of microtransaction that they've rethought to be more lucrative than battlepacks

You forget that TF2 has a much better unlock system, and that game is published under EA too. Time to give EA "A New Hope."

the console versions don't have any unlocks

Wasn't it possible to level up your character and at certain levels you could use a weapon? Or is that only for Titan killing weapons? Its the taunts that you unlock via random "Advocate Gift" or tokens you get with each pilot level.

Titanfall 2 Ps4 player.

They're definitely moving towards that idea as seen with Battlefield 1, but the Battlepacks in that are unbelievably overpriced, and the odds of getting anything worthwhile are abysmal. At least in overwatch you are guaranteed 5 things, and at least one of those will be blue.
Right around when the game first came out, I made the mistake of buying like 15 battlepacks or something against my better judgement, and got like 5 or 6 duplicate low-tier skins, it was ridiculous.

Maybe he was thinking of Team Fortress 2, which was released on consoles by EA.

Titanfall 2 is never going to be abbreviated as "TF2" online. Team Fortress 2 has taken that one.
Just seeing battlefront it's obvious that battlefront 2 will not be worth, same as BF1. Maybe for 20 bucks I'd consider it.

It's possible, however unlikely, that EA has actually grown a brain and decided to treat it's playerbase as customers instead of cash cows.
The game sounds highly promising from announcements. Many features absent from EA's first take are poised to be in from the start. I am not going to preorder anything anymore, let alone an EA title, but I remain cautiously optimistic that this will be good.
If they keep the micro transactions limited to cosmetics I might consider it if the game is good.

alternatively no season pass but it'll still have 50$ of DLC

Goddamnit tf2 means team fortress 2

And yes there's predence for this because EA had a hand in tf2 and l4d console releases and even sometimes would copyright flag meet the reuploads
Well, they did (unofficially) state that they wanted to move away from the usual Premium model present in their other games for a while, but but had difficulties doing so due to EA.
And here I was thinking they might consider a similar 'Premium Party' like in BF1
I hope it turns out well

Mass Effect.
This is like when a bully promises he's not going to hit you. You don't believe he's changed their ways, just that he's becoming more devious.
One day after our interview, EA reached out to ask us to withhold the confirmation that there won't be a Season Pass for Battlefront II. The reason, we were told, is because they couldn't definitively say whether that would be the case, despite what Diemer said and expounded upon.
It sounds like they weren't ready to reveal this information yet, likely because the makeup of the Season Pass replacement hasn't been nailed down.
EA sent over the following statement to attempt to clarify Diemer's remarks:
While we’re not ready to confirm any live service plans just yet, what we can say is this we heard the feedback from our Battlefront community loud and clear. We know they want more depth, more progression, and more content. So we’re focused on delivering that in every dimension of Star Wars Battlefront II. We’ll have more to share about our plans soon.
Make of that what you will.
Sounds like the devs don't want to do a season pass but EA sure as fucking shit does.
If they don't have a Season Pass, they'll probably use a system similar to Titanfall 2's, where cosmetic stuff funds maps and gameplay for everybody- which is a pretty good system, if you ask me.

DICE know that the DLC splits the multiplayer community
people also noticed this from Titanfall (which was noted for Titanfall2's development)

I'm pretty glad AAA devs are starting to note this and hopefully shy away from it, it's incredibly damaging to games, and in general people are reasonably happy to splash out for cosmetics.
Instead they'll charge $120 for the game rather than $60 plus another $50 for the season pass.

If I got to pay more to get included DLC for two years so be it. 120 isn't a bad price if there's promised content involved
Sounds like the devs don't want to do a season pass but EA sure as fucking shit does.
It always bothers me when I see people blame a developer for things like DLC and season passes being community-segregating and questionable, but most of the time it's publisher fuckery. Sometimes even directly influencing significant game design choices that overall fuck with the experience, like Dead Space 3's microtransactions and DLC ending.
Spread the knowledge that EA is trying to get the Battlefront II devs to back off about their statement of 'no Season Pass' and let it burn into the recesses by word of mouth so that everyone knows to tell EA to fuck off.
