ELITE bodybuilder Rich Piana has died more than two weeks after he was placed in an induced coma - with his estranged wife paying a touching tribute to her ex.
Fellow bodybuilders and fans had spoken of their shock this morning amid previously unconfirmed reports Piana had died after collapsing from a possible overdose. A Florida medical examiner confirmed to TMZ that Piana died in hospital early on Friday morning.
Writing on Twitter ex Sara Piana said: "I'm in tears writing this that @1dayumay has just passed away. I can barely believe this... I am so saddened & heartbroken that he didn't make it. I just want to say THANK YOU Rich for teaching me so much about life, whether it was the easy or the hard way."
Online coach Jerry Ward posted a message on Instagram: “Rich has passed. Confirmed. I waited till I knew it was real hoping it was fake news. It isn't. I don't know what to say. Outside of bodybuilding rich was my friend. He checked up on me and my ventures, he was always the one saying "let's get a picture" when he was busy and I didn't want to bother him."
Rich reportedly collapsed as his girlfriend Chanel Jansen cut his hair earlier this month.
The social media star was placed into an induced coma after suffering "a medical emergency", TMZ Sports reported. Law enforcement sources told the celebrity news website: "Emergency personnel responded to a possible overdose call at Piana's home on Monday afternoon. His girlfriend tried to catch him when he collapsed in the bathroom, but couldn't due to his giant size.
According to TMZ, she was instructed by the 911 operator to perform CPR on the former bodybuilding champ, but was unable to revive him. Police later revealed they found bottles of testosterone and white powder in the house and Chanel admitted to responders that he had been juicing for more than 20 years.
Piana, who has competed in and won several bodybuilding competitions over the years, made headlines last year when he openly admitted to taking steroids. He revealed his fitness regime consists of a massive steroid cycle, nine meals a day, a series of workouts not fit for the average human being and, according to one profile, “protein shakes big enough to drown a toddler in”.
The winner of bodybuilding competitions in Los Angeles in 2003 and Sacramento in 2009, Piana said the secret to his success was his honesty.
He said: “Coming out, talking about steroids, just being straight up with people. I think people trust me.”
Not that many sources about this right now, apologies, but it's very recent.
While I was never personally a huge fan of Rich, it can't be denied that he made big waves in the fitness community. His outrageous personality and even more ridiculous body inspired millions of average people to start going to the gym and working out. I was really hoping he'd make it, as ironic as that sounds, despite his enormously unhealthy routine and drug use.
Rest in peace.
Knew he was never going to wake up from his coma.

How is he a fitness icon? He must have been the most unhealthy 'fit' person I've ever seen.
There were probably 500 pound obese people with longer life expectancy than him.
Really sorry to hear that he's lost his life but damn he was just straight up abusing his body.
One scoop too many.

I think Rich was probably one of the most notorious, if not the most, controversial figures in the industry. Even at a glance you could tell this guy was nuts, and he's been on camera actually telling people "don't do what i do, it's bad for you". His goal was to have the biggest arms in the universe.
That being said, a lot of people enjoy looking up to exaggerated figures as role models. It's extremely unlikely anyone would ever try to actually be like him, but he gave plenty of people the motivation to be fitter and lift weights.

He's more of a meme than an icon. No one actually thinks what he was doing was healthy. His attitude/persona was just so extreme.

I wonder if he accomplished his goal.
Would like to see a comparison of him and John Cena standing side by side.
Rich could have been a pro wrestler provided he wouldn't have run the risk of popping his inflated biceps.
The polar opposite of Natty
This guy was the masculine equivalent of that girl obsessed with surgery to make herself a Barbie doll. Disturbing that this kinda behavior is encouraged by so many
im curious as to what these workouts unfit for average humans are

I actually did something like this one time where I isolated only my biceps and triceps. I only lasted about an hour until my muscles started spasming at the slightest flex
Best way to explain Rich Piana for people not very much into bodybuilding is he was basically the Filthy Frank of Bodybuilding, fucking crazy but deep inside he taught us viable lessons. He also got a lot of respect for the fact that he didn't hide his steroid usage and was outspoken about it instead of trying to hide it as many many other youtubers do.
Rich had a interesting personality by the fact that he had a "whatever it fucking takes godfuckingdammit" mindset on everything he did, many interesting videos on how to isolate certain muscles and so on, tips tricks and so on. Very honest person when it came to the question instead of trying to circumvent it.
As a sign of respect stand up for the natty anthem

I guess he left humanity behind.

Fake nattys
This has actually hit me a bit hard because of how much me and my school mates used to watch his videos. We used to mimic his quotes a lot in his voice and we even made a few parody videos. No matter what criticism was brought up I think one thing no one can deny was how much of a character he was. 'Goddammit,' 'shake time,' 'cookie time,' 'goooood morning' and a plethora other stuff he used to say. You search up 'Rich Piana Compilation' and there's heaps of quotes. Coming back home from school I used to get a good laugh and it made my days better. RIP goddammit. May you eat more cookies in heaven.
A shame, but can't say I'm really surprised.
This aint a "good fucking morninnng godadamnit" I liked some of his irl vids and crossovers with other youtubers, real entertaining and honest guy real shame about his addiction and end.
