Tennessee Legislature Blocks Chattanooga's Municipal Fiber Expansion & Gives $45m Subsidy To Telecom

Chattanooga, Tennessee has the fastest, most affordable internet in the United States. Many of the rural areas surrounding it have dial up, satellite, or no internet at all. Chattanooga wants to expand its network so these rural areas can have the same Gbps and 10 Gpbs connections the city has. Rather than allow that to happen, Tennessee's legislature just voted to give Comcast and AT&T a $45 million taxpayer handout.
"Broadband means fast right? Lets just waste money!' :downs:
Name and shame the members that blocked this, so we know who AT&T is paying.
Then, someone should go cut their internet lines.
Fucking Comcast, by rights they should be as dead as the dinosaurs but when you have a near monopoly over ISP coverage, that isnt going to happen anytime soon.
Maybe someday we'll see them regulated out of existence, or forcibly split up.
Those old dogs need to be put to sleep.

I agree. Then someone should do something about Comcast.
This is fucking bullshit. What is the reasoning for this except the fact they politicians were paid off?!

With the repeal of the ISP Domain Privacy act (I think that's what it was called), we can just buy the browsing history of politicians.
Hell, Cards Against Humanity is doing that right now.
My apartment made a deal where the only ISP available is at&t. I get like "15mbs" (more like 5mbs) DSL for more than 60 dollars a month with a 1tb data cap. literally fuck at&t

Try my home, where the only option is aging AT&T ADSL with a max of 6mbs DL and <=2mbs upload.
Fuck all the big telcos. (I've only in the past year or so been getting decent speeds, and that's thanks to my college investing in their network and paying for a bearable residence hall ISP).
What a fucking joke
Oh boy. That's me.
So, Chattanooga's run an incredibly successful municipal broadband program for a while now. It far outclasses Nashville and Spring Hill's speeds, and they were a phase 2 Google Fiber-shed.
Our state legislature, however, being a red state, is predominantly red, and in the pockets of any corporation that will pay them. Our governor ran an incredibly widespread service station chain for several years. If you want to know what "running the government like a business" looks like, we've been doing it for some time.
The problem is, we've got these progressive patches - Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville - but the rural voters overtake them, and they're gerrymandered to hell. That's why this shit keeps passing (Along with making the Bible the state book, making the Barrett .50 Cal the state gun, denying therapy based on religious grounds, allowing drivers to run over protesters without facing criminal charges, the bill stating that children born from artificial insemination are illegitimate, etc.)
It's hard to be a progressive liberal from Tennessee, it really is.

Lol try here where we got grandfathered in to their "fast" speed of 5mbps down and 1 up and when I called about slow internet and horrrid down times trying to find out if it's maintenance or something they offered me an upgrade to 3mbps down for $20 more a month. -2mbps sure is a good upgrade deal...
