• Kodi Users Are Not Risking Ten Years in Prison, Despite Tabloid Claims

[T]https://torrentfreak.com/images/kodi-10-years.png[/T]
UK tabloids including The Mirror, Daily Mail, The Sun and The Express are reporting that people watching Kodi streams risk ten years in jail. Despite that being a false claim spawned from a click-bait agenda, dozens of other publications sadly followed up by reporting the same 'news'. The massive public interest is down to the set-top box craze, which is largely fueled by legal Kodi software augmented with infringing addons that provide free access to premium movies, TV channels and live sports. While this a topic one might expect technology sites to report on, just recently UK tabloids have flooded the market with largely sensational stories about Kodi and piracy in general, which often recycle the same story time and again with SHOCKING click-bait headlines YOU JUST WON’T BELIEVE. We’ve had to put up with misleading headlines and stories for months, so a while ago we made an effort to discuss the issues with tabloid reporters. Needless to say, we didn’t get very far. Most ignored our emails, but even those who responded weren’t prepared to do much. One told us that his publication had decided that articles featuring Kodi were good for traffic while another promised to escalate our comments further up the chain of command. Within days additional articles with similar problems were being published regardless and this week things really boiled over.

As reported this week, the Digital Economy Act raises penalties for online copyright infringement offenses from two to ten years, but only in specific circumstances. Users streaming content to their homes via Kodi is absolutely not one of them. To fall foul of the new law a user would need to communicate a copyrighted work to the public. In piracy terms that means ‘uploading’ and people streaming content via Kodi do nothing of the sort. The Digital Economy Act offers no remedy to deal with users streaming content – period – but let’s not allow the facts to get in the way of a click-inducing headline. The Mirror article weaves in comments from Kieron Sharp from the Federation Against Copyright Theft. He notes that the new legislation should be targeted at people making a business out of infringement, which will hopefully be the case. However, the article incorrectly extrapolates Sharp’s comments to mean that the law also applies to people streaming content via Kodi. Only making things more confusing, it then states that people “who casually stream a couple of movies every once in a while are extremely unlikely to be prosecuted to such extremes.”
https://torrentfreak.com/no-kodi-users-are-not-risking-ten-years-in-prison-170507/ I've been seeing this particular headline being spread around. Thought it was worth sharing this so people aren't being misled by garbage, poorly researched, clickbait tabloids. Also any article reporting on this kind of poorly researched news is worth a read. And the cherry on top: [T]https://torrentfreak.com/images/express-torrentfreak.png[/T]
I fucking hate tabloids "Freedom of the press" imo should not include the freedom to publish shit that isn't even news at all.
I love how they're placing the blame on Kodi despite the fact it comes down 100% to certain addons. Guess what, I can use Chrome to go on the pirate bay and get 27 seasons of 8 different shows. Chrome must be illegal as hell!
Lol anyone who reads Tabloids and believes that shit is probably too dumb to know how to pirate content properly anyway. They're the kind of people who download GameOfThronesSeason13.avi.exe from freetelevisionshowsnoviruses.com
You forget though, you're also using windows, which is on a computer, and using electricity the issue stems all the way through those things the electric company is the real issue with piracy you see
Time for a class action against the power generation industry.
You forget though, you're also using windows, which is on a computer, and using electricity the issue stems all the way through those things the electric company is the real issue with piracy you see
But you see it goes further than that, who supplies electricity to the electric company? That's right, mother nature. I hope mother nature has good lawyers...
everytime someone shares a daily mail or equivalent trash news tier article on my facebook my soul slips out of my body slightly farther
It really sucks that the Kodi brand got shit on by these "Kodi box" sellers. Check the Kodi twitter sometime, you get people bugging them constantly about why they don't have this show or that movie.
God damn. I love Kodi!

I hate how everything thinks Kodi is pirating software. Its pretty much just a better version of Windows Media Center.
I fucking hate tabloids "Freedom of the press" imo should not include the freedom to publish shit that isn't even news at all.
While I understand this is UK, and I see your point. In my case (where I am from), that would give someone the right to decide what is and is not "news". And as you might of seen, isn't a good option for USA's current president (as he already tries to do it).

God better have a crack legal team.
Doesn't surprise me even slightly that the daily mail and the sun are part of this.
Kodi actually did a fake seizure on April Fools. A lot of people were pretty pissed about that.
It's funny how a month or two ago they were promoting the use of kodi
It's funny how a month or two ago they were promoting the use of kodi
Their clicks probably went down and now they're trying to boost them back up in the most idiotic way.
I fucking hate tabloids "Freedom of the press" imo should not include the freedom to publish shit that isn't even news at all.
It also shouldn't mean freedom for one old rich right wing billionaire to own a huge percentage of the media. Yet it gets used to defend that all the time...
People who post articles like these from these tabloids on Facebook make my blood boil with anger.
it must be such a struggle working on Kodi and hearing people say shit like this Kodi is really one of the strongest media center solutions since Windows Media Center and it's a shame this audience scammers and third party stores managed to attract towards Kodi seems to hold them back from evolving their work (Re: the buzz surrounding Kodi and piracy is so great that content publishers don't want to work with us)
