N. Kaijū Eiga (怪獣映画) - A film genre that features monsters, usually attacking a major Japanese city or engaging other monsters in battle. It is a subgenre of tokusatsu (special effects-based) entertainment.
Also known colloquially as “Giant Monster Movies from Japan”, Kaijū Eiga is a genre stretching back 62 years, having roots in Japan from its humble beginnings in 1954. Since then, these “Beasts from the East” have become a staple of western culture, with spoofs, homages and tributes dedicated to them for decades at a time.
But where does one begin? How do you even start? Well, here are the 3 largest Kaijū Eiga series, starting with none other than the King of the Monsters himself.
Godzilla.
(ゴジラ | Gojira) aka Godzilla, is the first Kaijū Eiga film and is arguably the most recognizable. With 32 films in the series, spanning over 6 decades, Godzilla is one of the most influential characters in movie history, and is a household name throughout the world.

(ガメラ | Gamera) is Daiei Studio’s answer to Godzilla. Originally starting as a semi-ripoff, Gamera grew into his own beast, with a beautiful transition from a flying turtle to the Guardian of the Universe.

(ウルトラマン | Uruturoman) aka Ultraman, is a massive television series running for season after season, following the ever-growing journey of the Ultras and their defenses of the world against giant monsters. It needs its own thread!

There’s a huge number of other Kaiju films out there. Not just from Japan, of course, as the genre has now been used to encompass other creatures, beasts and massive men. Take a look and dig around for what you’re interested in.
oh yeah boy we're in
[sp]mothra be best giant monster[/sp]
And yes. That does say movie nights.
If enough finagling is done, some nights I will attempt to host film showings of obscure Kaiju films (abandonware but in film format).
Did someone say giant monster thread? Then you can't leave out the greatest of them all.

Fuck yes, Gorgo.
Seriously underrated film. It's one of the best non-Japanese monster movies out there, and I'd hiiiiiiiiighly recommend a watch.
this little guy gets too much hate

Not enough hate, more like. The little motherfucker singlehandedly ruined the ending to Final Wars for me.
Unpopular opinion, Final Wars is within my top 3 for Worst Toho G-films
Yeah, I think it had way too many sequences with human characters trying to be like Matrix characters.

Top 3 Best:
- Gojira
- GMK
- Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1st one)
Top 3 Worst:
- Godzilla's Revenge
- Final Wars
- Godzilla vs the Sea Monster (bite me)
Speaking of Final Wars (and Manilla), this was one of my favorite scenes from the movie
can we talk about super sentai/powerangers in here as well?
Sure! Tokusatsu of any kind is welcome, including Super Sentai/Power Rangers/Kamen Rider, etc. etc.
Always wanted to see some Godzilla but never knew where to start so flowchart in OP is actually super useful. Thanks a lot!
just finished Dairangers, which is the sentai that the white ranger in mmpr came from. highly reccomended for those just getting into sentai
Really saddened how the Godzilla 2014 game was subpar at best even with how super faithful it was to all the films, they could've delivered a better experience than the old Atari fighting games.
What the absolute hell was going on in Natsume's offices during development?

The PS3/4 game? I've been enjoying the PS3 game as something to waste an hour on every now and then (and oddly enough, despite me not even trying, I'm super close to platting the game). If I ever get a PS4 I might get that version purely because it has more monsters (including Rodan and Anguirus, who were curiously left out of the PS3 version).
I'm here to represent the best Kaiju-ifu then

Despite people complaining about it, I really want a PS4 so I can play the Godzilla game

Honestly surprised Toho didn't try to cram out a Shin-Goji DLC

I'm not even sure if they're still planning on doing DLC. I don't think it got the sales to justify DLC. Kinda upsetting, because some of the ideas that were pitched seemed pretty awesome.

Just finished Godzilla 1984, pretty good movie. The animatronic and puppets they used for Godzillas head up close was pretty ugly but other than that the special effects were great. I thought the human segments were really good compared to other Godzilla films and I see a lot of similarities with Shin Gojira.
8.5/10
