Nintendo has abruptly decided to end North American production of the NES Classic, one of their most popular items in years, the company said today.

The NES Classic, an adorable miniature computer with an NES-styled shell that plays 30 different classic NES games, has been one of the most popular limited edition items in recent memory, leading to widespread supply shortages. Scalpers have made a fortune buying up NES Classics and marking up prices on eBay, and this decision will no doubt exacerbate that problem.
are you heckin serious
Given the widespread excitement, interest, and sales of the NES Classic, it only makes sense for Nintendo to stop selling it.
lol http://kotaku.com/nintendo-discontinues-the-nes-classic-1794303321
Holy shit. I feel bad for all who didn't get one. I got one myself after months of searching by casually finding it in some electronic store. What. The. Fuck. Nintendo.
Now make a SNES one.
What the fuck, why?
What the fuck, why?
nintendo got their money from it
well there go my hopes of ever owning one lol [editline]kappa[/editline] seriously why the fuck? i don't know shit about the manufacturing process on these things but considering a lot of the value from them comes from old ROMS of 20 year old games, surely the profit per unit must be high enough to justify it when they literally fly off the shelves every time they restock??
Yeah, I've seen some people on Twitter get pretty goddamn angry and rightfully so.
-snip merge-
Scalpers have made a fortune buying up NES Classics and marking up prices on eBay, and this decision will no doubt exacerbate that problem.
Nintendo sounds like they'd be pretty good at selling limited edition vinyl records.
Fuck, I need to get one for my friend now (I have mine). So how much do you think scalper price will go up now?
Shit, too bad. I wanted to insert a Raspberry Pi into one to make my own emulator machine. Oh well, let's hope they'll make an SNES one
Nintendo is fucking moronic when it comes to distribution, I have know idea what there deal is.
I love you Nintendo but what the hell are you doing. Between this and locking DLC behind physical statues that are just as hard to come by as a NES Classic I dunno what they are thinking
:why: I mean it's not surprising to hear, but come on Nintendo.
Nintendo is fucking moronic when it comes to distribution, I have know idea what there deal is.
I called my local best buy regarding Nintendo Switch Restocks and he brought up the NES Classic while i was asking and i told him it's being discontinued and he didn't react to that too well. :s:
Wow does that make the existing one's very valuable? Noice.
What the christ, it was 60 euro on release and now even the chain-retailers is selling them for 140 euro. What the fuck is going on
Why do I have a feeling that this is more so being discontinued as Virtual Console for Switch will be a thing soon? Yes, even though this was only twenty games. Yes, even though not everyone has a Switch.
It was never really worth it getting one, unless you want to own a downscaled NES for the sake of showing off you own it.
So from what I'm getting out of this the SOC the console was designed around was discontinued so Nintendo cannot manufacture more consoles without having to redesign the electronics for a new chip, or pay for the manufacturer to do another run of the chips which would be horribly expensive and if the demand drops off might leave Nintendo with a chip stock they cannot use for anything else. Given the success of the unit I totally expect a new model to come around near Christmas.
So he was advertising or he was just chatting and didn't know they stopped making them?
Chatting, I was guessing he wanted to get his own since he made a routine to check the restocks.
Won't this just make people turn to emulators and downloaded roms? I haven't had a Nintendo console since Gamecube, so what are the (legal) alternatives out there for playing old NES games?
It was never really worth it getting one, unless you want to own a downscaled NES for the sake of showing off you own it.
That was the entire point of it. [editline]13th April 2017[/editline]
Won't this just make people turn to emulators and downloaded roms?
Get a used NES?
At that point you might as well pirate, not like money is going back to Nintendo. And Nintendo are extremely shit at providing alternatives and the alternatives they do provide are stupidly priced and there are TONS of classics they don't provide a purchasable alternative for, meaning the only way you'd ever be able to play them is through Emulation or purchasing the actual copy, which again would be second hand, or this fucking thing, which was both stupidly priced AND stupidly handled as this clearly shows.
Shit and I had the chance to buy one Tuesday but didn't because I wanted to save up. Missed out on a good investment because "Oh Nintendo wouldn't be THAT retarded would they?"
The NES Classic was ment as a marketing tool to inject nostalgia and bring kids into the classic game fold. The Switch was 3-4 months ahead of the nes classics release.it made the modern public go crazy over nintendo again since the wii u didnt do so hot. it was never ment to be a permanent product. i never got one but i dont really mind. disney uses similar tactics for their "disney vault"
is this what they call a nintendo move
I mean I guess I'll just emulate the games then, shouldn't be hard to find a Bluetooth NES controller lookalike so that I don't have to worry about the shitty small cable
If vendors wanted to not be shitty they could allow people to place orders without charging their card and then restock them when demand reaches a certain threshold, but I guess limited editions create hype and guarantee sales.
