Last week we reported that Apple’s spending on lobbying has risen to record highs since Trump took office. Now there is news that President Trump’s lobbying of his own – to get Apple to bring manufacturing stateside – has been successful…at least according to Trump.
In an interview with the WSJ, President Trump said that Tim Cook has “promised” to build three manufacturing plants in the U.S.
“I spoke to [Mr. Cook], he’s promised me three big plants—big, big, big,” Mr. Trump said as part of a discussion about business-tax reform and business investment. “I said you know, Tim, unless you start building your plants in this country, I won’t consider my administration an economic success. He called me, and he said they are going forward.”
Trump didn’t share details about the timeline or where the supposed plants would be located and Apple declined to comment on the matter to the WSJ.
no clue if this is even politics related, its apple building manufacturing plants.
Apple had a plant in texas once but they shut it down for some reason.
I don't think The Cook is happy.

Good of you to spoil potentially confidential information Trump

Well, you cant expect much from a man running his mouth 27/7.
Great, more overpriced style-over-substance "devices" to clutter up the market.

Apple products are nice.
Apple products are nice.
And are way over priced, you are paying for the Apple logo.

Well obviously they're overpriced. However, they still produce nice hardware- their laptops specifically. I've got a 2013 mbp retina and it's still running beautifully, and hasn't wobbled apart. Can't say the same for any other laptop I've purchased from any other manufacturer.

You can get a nice product and it can still be overpriced.
edit: ninjad
i bet they're gonna tack on the "made in america" line in their next keynote now.

This is actually the #1 thing I do like Apple for tbh. The solid metal construction of many of their laptops makes pretty much every laptop I've purchased envious.
Laptops really should have metal construction so the screw holes don't break off so easily.

I don't know if we can count Trump as a reputable source :v: More so after Apple declined to comment.
Seems really unlikely for them open a large scale manufacturing plant in the US, especially in the area of electronics, perhaps if they do open one in the US it'll be for more speciality products.
Nah, we have Apple products all over our office and they're great. They can be 7 years old and still be like new because they adopted the newest standards early. They also take a lot of abuse from idiots. My job would be hell if it where all PC's running Windows which is unstable hot garbage compared to OSX and Linux.
IBM saved a shitload of money by switching to Apple computers despite the initial high cost
The Mac Pro was probably the best product they managed to put out up until they let their insane designers at it and made it a trash can. Still holds up today and looks nice.
Now Android and Microsoft have their shit together, there's really less reason to get Apple stuff when you have the Surface and Pixel devices out there undercutting them for cost.
Plus Apple seems to have utter contempt towards anyone that wants to work on their devices.

If apple is opening plants in the U.S. does this mean their products are going to get even more expensive to cover the cost of actually paying their factory workers a decent wage?

I still use an Inspiron from Dell(nearly 100% plastic)made in 2007(Vista machine) and everything still works fine. I use it every day for company social media management. I will not take a side, though I agree that Apple products are of high quality. My point is, anecdotes are worthless when describing personal experience of build quality.
Edit: incidentally, in my college years I put OSX on it, as it was a suitable candidate for near perfect hackintosh installation.

na they'll just remove important features like external buttons, speakers, and make the phones only a little more expensive to compensate

I think trump is bullshitting again, foxconn has been said to be exploring opening several manufacturing plants here, foxconn also builds iphones, so in trumpland foxconn = apple and all is well.
except foxxcon said the plants themselves would be more testbeds for large scale reconfigurable automation to produce electronics
Foxconn's plans are to be announced Wednesday at the White House, with a follow-up event Thursday at the Milwaukee Art Museum, according to one source. Tuesday night, the White House listed a 5 p.m. Wednesday "jobs announcement" in the East Room on President Donald Trump's schedule.
just like samsung and a hundred other branded products.
People like them and buy them regardless.
The only new smartphones that are really really superduper good value for a small amount of money are basically Chinese phones and most people automatically think they'll be shit because they're chinese branded.

I'm honestly curious as to when this changed. When I was in high-school, we were required to use G4/G5 Macs and the occasional iMac, and they were the laggiest, crashiest pieces of shit I've ever used outside of the mid-90's era PCs in the Computer class that were forced to run Windows 98/2000, and had been disassembled/reassembled by high-schoolers for years.

I couldn't imagine running a network with just macs, it sounds like a dreadful idea. Whenever I get a ticket regarding a Mac. My heart sinks, I don't mind it if it isn't an enterprise network, but hooking up a Mac with LDAP/AD and Exchange is a fucking ballache. Office is a bit sketchy on it but yeah get's the job done. Can't group policy the machine as far as I know. Logon scripts are basically impossible and roaming profiles don't exist with mac AFAIK.
If they are building plants in the US they'll be heavily automated. They'll probably employ very few people with really high degrees to run the place.

Theirs a software package we use called JAMF, its pretty much mandatory for a Mac environment. It allows you to add scripts and group policy and provides many of if not more features than managing Windows with Windows Server, we also use it to manage software and licenses on the machines. Which is important since some of the licenses we have are $1000's of dollars :v:
Still not for everyone I would agree, I use an Inspiron 1500 Gaming instead of a mbp at work with dual boot hackintosh cause I get tired of how locked down Apple is with their stuff.
This hardly has anything to do with the Trump administration. As automation becomes more efficient and shipping prices for various raw materials lowers, it's actually starting to become cheaper to go local and not have to deal with monitoring and dealing with a foreign entity.
The Mac Pro was built in the US - at least for a while, though obviously that thing wasn't exactly a high volume product. Manufacturing stuff in the US won't be outrageously expensive, even if wages are higher. Considering Apple's margins, they could easily do it; question is whether the good PR is enough (or perhaps they're looking to get some favours from the Trump administration, who knows) to justify the expense.
