An investigation is underway in California after 13 siblings ages 2 to 29 were allegedly held captive in a home, some "shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks," the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said in a press release.
Two parents, 57-year-old David Allen Turpin and 49-year-old Louise Anna Turpin, were arrested in the torture and child engagement case in Perris, about 27 miles south of San Bernardino.
The investigation began early Sunday morning when a 17-year-old girl allegedly escaped from the home and called 911, claiming that her 12 brothers and sisters were being held captive there, the sheriff's office said.
Responding officers said the teen "appeared to be only 10 years old and slightly emaciated."
Inside the home was a shocking scene.
Several children were "shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks in dark and foul-smelling surroundings," the sheriff's office said. "The victims appeared to be malnourished and very dirty."
Seven of the victims were adults, ranging in age from 18 to 29, the sheriff's office said. The others were children as young as 2. The victims -- who authorities say claimed to be starving -- were given food and drinks and interviewed, the sheriff's office said. They were then hospitalized for treatment, the authorities said.
The parents were interviewed and later booked on charges of torture and child endangerment, the sheriff's office said. Bail was set at $9 million each.
David Turpin's parents, James and Betty Turpin of West Virginia, told ABC News they are “surprised and shocked” by the allegations against their son and daughter-in-law.
James and Betty Turpin said they hadn't seen their son and daughter-in-law since visiting them in California some four to five years ago. However, they said they have kept in touch with them by phone since. They told ABC News they had not spoken to their grandchildren, saying David Turpin or his wife would often call when they were without the children, who are homeschooled.
The distraught grandparents added that David and Louise Turpin are considered a good Christian family in their community, saying they can't understand “any of this.”
The sheriff's office said it's believed that all of the victims were their biological children.
Dear fucking lord is this insane.
I wonder what insanity drives people to chain your 13 children
Like, is there a benefit to it in their broken minds?
How many books can they throw at these sick bastards? I hope the courts settle for nothing less than life in prison. These two sickos ruined 13 innocent lives, if that ain't evil I don't know what is.
How many books can they throw at these sick bastards?
Screw the books, I'd throw the entire fucking library.
Where do people get off thinking they are allowed to do this? Just because you're the parents doesn't mean your children don't have free will.

I love splitting different sentences from the same article and putting them together, draws a more colorful narrative I feel.
Humans are monsters.
Humans are monsters.
why is it that when one person does something horrible, for some reason people lump in all humans with them?

I dont think he means like that but you dont really see (and if you do, very rarely) animals doing fucked up torturous shit to other animals/prey
I live real close to Perris, and a friend of mine lives in the same area as this.
Absolutely horrifying. Is this like some weird cult/religion thing? How did they think this was acceptable?
God those faces are disturbing. Gives me handmaid's tales kind of vibes with all the matching clothes though.
they look like the creepy next door neighbor(s) that end up being killers in a horror movie

I feel like it's just a passing comment about how humans are capable of some horrific shit and not literally "I hate myself and every other human in existance."

Even so, I don't think it really adds anything. It's sort of like replying to shitty news with "black people are thugs" "white people are racists" "Men are sexual predators" etc. I guess it's more okay because you're not singling out populations of humans but the problem of generalizing a group based on the bad actions of a few still stands out. It doesn't add anything to just shit on a whole species like that most humans are pretty good people #NotAllHumans.

Sure, but you have to remember that we're all mankind
Humanity's equilibrium is fickle, we can go on each side of the spectrum
We give money, support, love to the needy, and we also stalk, harass, rape and murder.
We can all be Gandhi, and we can all be Hitler; because all that stands between them is choice

Yeah, but you could say that about any of those sub-groups though. I just think we should keep a cool head, condemn the pieces of shit without making judgmental statements about the species as a whole. Kind of like how letting your own moral failings define you isn't a good way towards improving yourself, we shouldn't let these failings define humanity because that's not the best way forward. They define themselves, the best thing to do is learn from them rationally.

I am not arguing with you, obviously not all humans are the same, but we are all humans, and we are all potentially the same
They did this to their children because they chose to. They aren't monsters, they're human, just like you and I. The only difference being I choose to never do this to people
I dont think he means like that but you dont really see (and if you do, very rarely) animals doing fucked up torturous shit to other animals/prey
Yeah except for the fact that plenty of animals do really fucked up shit. Ducks gang rape to reproduce, dolphins rape and "murder"(if you can call animals killing each other murder, idk there's a philosophical problem for you to explore I suppose), etc. Animals are fucking brutal and to say that humans do more torturous fucked up shit is pretty ignorant of how much fucked up shit actually happens in nature.
Yeah except for the fact that plenty of animals to really fucked up shit. Ducks gang rape to reproduce, dolphins rape, apes rip faces off, etc. Animals are fucking brutal.
Honestly, anyone who thinks humans are even close to the most brutal species on this planet, are blatantly ignorant about nature at large.
We're pretty fucking tame compared to a good chunk of other animals around.

I mean if we were even like most other apes we'd settle most petty disagreements by trying to tear each other's arms off. Shit there's even an entire sub-reddit dedicated to nature gore/brutality, I read an article on it and the author even mentions a gif of cats literally fucking a corpse.

Fucking monsters, let them spend the rest of their lives in some high security desert prison.
Good and evil are different sides on the same coin, changes in one are perpendicular to the other. The kinder we get, the bigger monsters we can be.
Someone ELI5 why they are still given a bail
Technically if someone was willing to pay for them and their passports not impounded, they could run off to somewhere?
I mention this because we've had cases of high profile suspects running out while on bail.
Poor kids. Imagine being held captive for 29 years by your parents and with every new sibling born
you'll know the same will also happen to them.
For some reason I find it extra creepy how all the children have the same haircut as their parents.

Oh boy, it's been a while I've seen someone be this wrong about something. Animals are doing absolutely insane shit to each other all the time. Sometimes by instinct, meaning their entire species is like this. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_coercion is just one example)
Actually we are the only species that even has a concept like ethics. I think for that reason we can't say that some species of cuddly animals is evil because they kill their competitor's infants and have sex with their dead relatives, but the attitude that humanity is so much worse than all the shit that happens in nature is really wrong and counterproductive in my opinion.

I don't really get the point of setting a bail at all if it's so high - isn't the point that bail should be high enough so you wouldn't want to run off, but low enough that you could probably scrape together the money somehow? If you're not gonna respect the second aspect (or if you couldn't possibly set the first condition high enough), there's really no point setting a bail at all.
Don't judges have discretion to not set a bail at all or what?

No they don't, you are just biased because you know what they have done. They look completely normal.
So I'm guessing they were making an attempt at draining the life force of all 13 children in order to be young and alive looking again.

Bruh, ignoring what they've done, they do look fucking weird.
I wonder how long this has been happening:disgust:
OFFTOPIC: One can remove the word BLURRED in the URL of that wedding photo, great job ABC-news

Which Batman movie was that from again?

My dude that woman's eyes are so sunken in looking I'm pretty sure you could fit a whole second set of eye balls in that abyss.
And the dude looks like the Beatle's creepy uncle.
They look weird, regardless of the fact they're both horrific monsters.
