It looks like cryptocurrency mining is driving up Nvidia graphics card prices too

We pointed out a couple of weeks ago that cryptocurrency miners are largely to blame for the scarcity of AMD Radeon RX 580 and 570 graphics cards. That has not changed—finding an RX 580/570 in stock and without a grossly inflated price tag is a near-impossible task—but what has changed is that miners now seem to be driving up the price of Nvidia's GeForce GTX 1060 and 1070 cards too.

This is crazy, I've bought my 1080 for 685$ a few weeks ago and now the cheapest one is 1113$.
Holy fuck, I felt bad for getting a 1080 at around 700USD instead of waiting and getting a 1080ti for 700$ about
now not so much, I'd have had to have waited until the right discount and I could have been totally SCREWED if I waited too long
yeah, that 25% boost I'd have gotten, could have landed me being stuck with a 970 :v:
This is an awful time for me to be trying to build a PC. Was originally planning to get a 580 and now that's out the window, combined with this. I guess I'll just wait.
It's the future we live in. I expect GPUs and Bitcoins to set the price of each other now days.
Prices for 1080s seem pretty normal on newegg to me.

Not sure how it is like outside the States, though.

It's pretty fuckin bad over here, most 1080's are over $800 which is made even worse by our currency being worthless compared to the dollar
I'm waiting for a 1180 Ti for my next build, I don't even want to think about how much that one's gonna cost
I just bought a 580 only a few weeks ago and I'm glad I did before all this started happening.
1070 stocks are fucking dry here. 1060 situation isn't as bad.
I don't think it's possible for me to take bitcoin miners seriously at all in 2017

Probably worth waiting for AMD's Vega stuff now
fucking bastards, graphics cards are expensive as fuck as it is over here.

Come again?
1 BTC currently equals $2,639.12 USD
I think someone's envious because they didn't jump on the train as early as others.
I like how everyone in this thread is talking about Bitcoins when absolutely nobody is GPU-mining Bitcoins in 2017.
You're going to want to blame Ethereum for this. Especially since the network just hit the point where GPUs with 2GB of VRAM can no longer mine. Which means all the miners were either buying these new cards for their new rigs, or they had to replace their old 2GB cards in their old rigs.

Except at this point mining them is more expensive in electricity bills than the fraction of bitcoins you make out of it.

That's why you mine other currencies and exchange them to BTC.
That's why you mine other currencies and exchange them to BTC.
Ehh, that seems flawed. Why would people trade BTC for a lesser value?

and that's literally why just straight up mining bitcoins themselves is a joke
you'll never break even mining them directly unless you started super early on, or are trading bitcoins. They're so massively expensive that mining them even with the best GPU/CPU is impossible.
and yet there are people out there that will spend fuckknows how much money on mining computers that will ultimately waste them money
Ehh, that seems flawed. Why would people trade BTC for a lesser value?
Speculative trading.
For example, if you had traded all your bitcoins for antshares about 2 days ago, you could have near enough quadrupled your money if you had sold at the high that happened yesterday.
Meanwhile BTC is slowly but surely making it's way to 3500 dollars.

If you had started mining Etherium at the start of the year, you'd have done WAY WAY more than break even.

Etherium mining is different of/c, since its like, actually new, thus actually not shit
though its pretty hard to catch onto what will be the next bitcoin unless you're already a part of the whole thing as a hobby / just happen to get lucky

tl;dr people sell hashing power used to mine various coins for a fee paid in BTC. currently profitable for several AMD and nVidia GPUs

Serious miners are buying these cards in bulk I think, which is even crazier to think about.
It's just as bad in Russia, prices are crazy, 1080s are from $850 to $1000. Guess I'll have to sit on my 760 for a couple years more
I was planning to get a GTX 1070 after I get my degree done in about a month from now, but now that I looked around because of this article, holy fuck, they are all sold out or 30% more expensive. This will only get worse, won't it?
Serious miners are buying these cards in bulk I think, which is even crazier to think about.
And I have numbers from local retailer: some people buy 400-600 cards in one time. Basically it's usual thing now when retailer get a pallet full of cards and one person buys all of them.

Nvidia and AMD are both going to bring out mining edition cards, they'll be cheaper but have crappy warranties and no display outputs.
I suggest you wait until those are released, the prices may go down then.
You may also consider buying something Vega-based right as they come out, they'll have initial stock at stores when the cards come out and miners will probably wait to see how fast and efficient Vega is compared to Polaris. Meanwhile gamers can just check out FPS and frametime benchmarks on day one since reviewers will get early samples.
I’m in the middle of selling a 380, what am I supposed to do when it is gone?
[editline]20th June 2017[/editline]
3GB 1060 is $230+
6GB 1060 is $270+

MicroCenter hasn’t changed prices yet
If you want a 1060 RUN LADS

The 1080 doesn't perform well at all for ethereum mining (apparently due to something with GDDR5X being worse than GDDR5 for mining). A 1070 will signigicantly outperform a 1080, and a 1060 is barely that far behind. Unless we see prices of the 580, 570, 1070 and 1060 (and the many used options) skyrocket, it is very unlikely the 1080 supply is at risk. That said, maybe because of the other card price increases, more people will turn to the 1080 and drain supply building normal computers, but I doubt it.
Here's a graph of Mh/s for various graphics cards.

Those are all running stock BIOS.
With BIOS mod and VRAM overclock, you can easily do 30-31MHash/sec with an RX580.
Son of a bitch so that's why the only available 580's are near $800. The ones for $250-$300 on Newegg are all out of stock.
It's never a great time to have your graphics card die on you, but FML it happened when this shit was kicking off everything for the past few weeks has been fucking extortionate here. Intergrated graphics it is for the time being then.
