Bob Iger Confirms Marvel and Star Wars Movies will move to Disney's Stream Service
Films from Marvel and Star Wars that now go to Netflix will move to Disney’s planned ad-free direct-to-consumer streaming service, CEO Bob Iger said today at an investor gathering.
“We’re going to launch big, and we’re going to launch hot” by late 2019, he told the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2017 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference.
He adds that it’s “possible” that it will launch in some overseas markets “earlier than we launch in the United States due to windowing opportunities that we have on the motion picture side.”
He expects to include four or five original movies — mostly live action — on the new service. “For now, what we have in development is all Disney branded,” he says.
There’ll also be four or five original Disney-branded TV series as well as three-to-four Disney-branded TV movies.
The app will also have Disney’s film library of nearly 500 films, and 7,000 episodes from the TV library. The CEO also expects to have “thousands” of shorts and “will produce more original short-form content” for it.
No word yet on pricing or the amount of Disney’s investment, although he says “we intend to get more specific about that in the months ahead.”
The fate of the Marvel and Star Wars films was the main question left hanging early last month when Iger announced his plan to offer direct to consumer services for Disney and Pixar productions, and for ESPN.
As a result, the planned Disney app “will have the entire output of the studio — animation, live action and Disney including Pixar, Star Wars and all of the Marvel films,” Iger says.
The Netflix shows (Daredevil, et all) will probably stay there. Seems like Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter will get moved over.
Ugh, moving everything to its own service just drives more people to piracy.

To be honest disney never really had a super huge on demand presence in the first place
They sprinkle Disney stuff everywhere but no one really had a complete collection
They sprinkle Disney stuff everywhere but no one really had a complete collection
That's fair enough but is anybody really going to fork out an additional subscription fee just for that specific collection?

I don't really know, but perhaps parents with young kids? And this would be nice bonus for the adults/older kids they might have.
A Disney Collection/access seems much more worthwhile to many families than many of the current subscription services in my opinion. Kinda depends on how complete of a collection it will be.
So how long until we're paying for something that bundles all these services together the same way cable does?
You know I'd rather have it all in one spot than spread out with Netflix and Hulu and whatever else. Disney has a huge enough backlog they can do.this.
I'll only be pleased if they have old TV shows like Darkwing Duck or Duck Tales.

I'd argue that Disney is one of the few companies that people will actually fork out for.
And just like that, any hopes of a Star Wars Netflix show vanishes before our very eyes.
Any word on the marvel television shows with netflix?
And honestly if this means Disney can be quicker on releases of all their media (including television, movies and originals) it could be decent.
I don't want to be nickle and dimed with subscription fees to dozens of different services with varying degrees of service quality.
That's really what it's starting to look like and I'm not buying it - literally and figuratively.
If this doesn't have Rebels on it might as well forget it.
I hate how every single single company with a handful of IPs are now jumping on the bandwagon and creating their own services. It's like they don't realise why Netflix became so popular in the first place.

this is especially relevent when they're going from the largest most successful streaming service which does actually defeat piracy to their own service which nobody will want to buy just to have all the fucking star wars movies in one place
it's like an episode of deep space 9 where a couple of ferengis learn what a streaming service is.
I hope they're planning some new series to put on this streaming service 'cause otherwise I think all this is really going to accomplish is losing a whole bunch of customers. It's already hard enough to convince people to fork out money for a streaming service that isn't Netflix as it is and I'm not sure their films have quite the same draw beyond theatrical release they seem to think they do

I think you'd be vaguely delusional to think otherwise.
I'm willing to give this a chance, for exactly one reason: It's probably the only way I'll ever get to watch some of the old Disney cartoons again. Specifically,

I will forever be pissed that the full series never made it to DVD.
Depending on how much content there is and the subscription price, this could actually quite interesting. I mean all of Disney's work would include all of their animated and Pixar movies, all the Marvel films, Star Wars, and wayyy more. There's also the possibility of day 1 new releases or even early releases exclusive to the service, which I can imagine a lot of people would wanna buy into especially if they don't already pay for other streaming services

too be honest i would, but thats if it includes all of their animated works (including all the old mickey shit) and every pixar movie. i currently use 2 paid streaming services (netflix and stan) but i would get more value out of a disney streaming service because i would use it more often.
This reminds me of that comic where 1 guy wanted to create an all in one app/program aside from the 14 others, and in the end there are 15 others.
We have Netflix, Amazon, HBO go, nobody wants to pay so much for so many streaming services

i wouldn't know because CBS will probably pull that and put it into their own service just to boost their new star trek show

why does this apply to literally everything

If Disney uses this to bring back all their own backlog of shows too risky to print, I will 100% day one subscribe.

No joke will marathon Pepper Ann the second it's put up on a streaming site.
