THIS IS A TRUE STORY.
The events depicted in this show took place in Minnesota in 2006. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed.
Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.
Welcome to Fargo, Minnesota, a haven of underworld crime in the sparsely populated American North. When trouble begins to seep out to the small towns like Bemidji and Duluth, what happens next blows the top off the quiet neighborhoods, and threatens the livelihood of the most unlikely of characters. Aw jeez.
Fargo is an American black-comedy crime-drama based upon a 1996 film of the same name (watch it sometime) Presumably, the story will take place in the Minnesota and North Dakota areas, primarily during the winter. The brisk atmosphere and close-knit community of characters creates a unique juxtaposition of comedy and suspense. A 10-episode limited series, Fargo is written by Noah Hawley. Emmy Award-winning director Adam Bernstein directed the premiere hour. Hawley, Warren Littlefield, Joel & Ethan Coen and Geyer Kosinski serve as executive producers. Fargo is produced by MGM Television and FX Productions.
Fargo, named after a North Dakota town and written by the Coen Brothers, is actually set in and around a gentle American small town called Brainerd, Minnesota, proud home of the mythical mighty lumberjack Paul Bunyan. The movie tells the story of an uber-loser Minneapolis car salesman, Jerry Lundegaard (William H Macy), who comes up with a knuckleheaded plan to have his own wife pretend-kidnapped by hired thugs in order to swindle his wealthy father-in-law out of the ransom. Needless to say, the whole thing goes horribly wrong, one thing leads to another and before you know it bodies are dropping all over the place. Enter Brainerd police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand, who won a best actress Oscar), hot on the trail of the two spectacularly incompetent yet murderous kidnappers, Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and his heroically sullen Swedish partner in crime Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare).
You have a nice day, now!
Good show. Nice to see someone make a thread for it.
First episode was fantastic. Second episode was a little weaker, but I'm still really enjoying this show.
I saw the movie for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I'm delighted by how the show is "adapting" it. There aren't any direct callbacks or anything, but it feels very Coen-esque. They set up similar concepts - criminal sociopath, washed-up salesman, determined lady cop - but take them in very different directions.
Also I drew up a Lester.

It says it's an anthology series, so there's still some chances for another season with an entirely different cast and story.
The post editing function is a bit wonky right now so please excuse all the shifty formatting.
Food for thought: I think sometime later in the series, someone's going to stumble across Carl's briefcase from the film. This is assuming it takes place in the same universe and isn't just a spiritual successor. Even just a brief shot of a red ice scraper handle stuck in the snow would do it for me.
There's only two episodes out but this show's already phenomenal. i have real high hopes for the rest of it
At this point I can say that it's great, unsettling, funny and better than original film.

:eng101: Us Northern folk don't actually speak like that, dontcha know?
I've just seen the first episode and I think it's great.
The Drifter Man[sp]who kills Hess and others[/sp]reminds me of certain characters from movies that I can't think of, it's just his behaviour, for example[sp]the way he pulls off the encounter with the Police Officer at the end[/sp]; and also Nygaard, the Hammer scene reminded me of Oldboy.
He kind of reminds me of a more sane Anton Chigur, which makes sense because it's another Coens film
Although actually in a way he's an opposite, with his "no rules" thing vs Anton's "can't kill anyone without a coin flip" thing

THAT'S IT!
I was thinking throughout knowing that Fargo was a Coen Bros. film and I was thinking of No Country but couldn't actually remember Bardem's character.
I'm definitely more curious about what Lorne Malvo's job description is.
I feel like he's a hitman, but not quite so.
More like problem solver, fixer of some sort. Think Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction, and guys like that.
Or Mike from Breaking Bad.
Fun fact, first two episodes were directed by Adam Bernstein which has directed some Breaking Bad episodes.
One large difference I've noted between the series and the movie.
In the movie, everything was done for money while in the series, there's no mention of money playing into anything significant to the story.
Money was semi significant in the first episode. It was the dividing force between the Hess sons and Lester's brother was successful where he wasn't, which his wife resented and brought Lester to bring the hammer down.
[editline]29th April 2014[/editline]
And the ransom money in episode two was kind of important.
But yeah, it's no where near as big as it was in the movie.

I think in the second episode, it's more of a plot device than a character motivation.
Mr. Wrench & Mr. Numbers were cool.
The guy is actually deaf, pretty awesome.
This is an especially enjoyable show for me since I live near these areas. So is this gonna be a one off kind of thing? Or are they gonna branch out for a second season?

Holy shit, it just hit me. No wonder the actor looked somewhat familiar- he was Plainview's adult son in There Will Be Blood.
I liked the part where Travis Marshall and Frank Lundy made perfect eye contact yet did not kill eachother.

I know about the money
I love the sheer absurdity of this series. The scene with the two guys and Lester could be pretty intimidating, but instead it was extremely funny because of a guy shouting in ASL. The scene at the diner would be nothing but a filler making characters meet each other, but instead it was absurd because of the mention of spiders.
It's some top notch writing right here.
