Cannabis reform may be coming to the European Union's most populous country as German conservatives, the Green Party and the Free Democratic Party continue their talks on forming a coalition government. Part of their discussions include an agreement on fully legalizing marijuana and selling the drug through pharmacies or licensed dispensaries.
[...]
Like the U.S., cannabis reform is creating unlikely political allies in the country thanks to the potential economic benefits of legalization. The Green Party has been a long-time advocate of marijuana legalization. And while Merkel has expressed hesitation in the past, her fellow Christian Democrat Joachim Pfeiffer previously teamed up with Green party member Dieter Janecek on a proposal to liberalize cannabis laws. Now, it's looking like marijuana legalization could be a point of agreement between four parties seeking to form a coalition government.
not sure if this belonged in polidicks
I thought Germany was more of a conservative country, didn't expect this
Good on Germany. But from my experience in Berlin, it's practically legal there already.

And just like that the unmatched efficiency and stoic work ethic the germans were so well known for, was lost forever .

Mostly fiscally conservative rather than socially, if I'm not mistaken?

Danktoberfest
Nice. Living in Belgium, which has a repressive drug policy (which does not and never will work), I can only applaud this. I can't imagine Belgium keeping up a ban if all neighbouring countries legalize it (or at least I hope so)...
I get higher when I suck on it.

It's currently up in the air which combination of parties is going to end up leading the country. The combination the article is talking about would consist of one of the currently reigning big conservative parties plus two smaller liberal parties, which are the ones in favor of marijuana legalization.

Well prostitution is legal, regulated and taxed there, which is pretty liberal
Pretty sure last time I heard about the topic they weren't that keen on legalizing it.
And that was just last month.
Common argument from people against it are problems that also come with other legal drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
Another argument is that making it legal and overall more accessible would also increase the use among teenagers even if it would be 18+ only.
Many fear that making it legal would also imply it is harmless.
(Thats their reasons, not mine.)
I'm not sure it will happen anytime soon. FDP and Greens are the ones being for it and they aren't the biggest to begin with. The "Jamaika Coalition" isn't set in stone yet, without that happening it will probably not happen any time soon.
Seems more like a tactic for the talks.
Present a stark point that you know is not gonna fly so you can retract it later in exchange for something else.
Under German law, the consumption itself of narcotics is not illegal: legally speaking, it is considered as non-punishable self harm. Legal commentaries recognise that it is possible to consume drugs without having bought them first, in a legal sense. This has the practical effect that a positive drug test does not necessarily mean that one has illegally purchased them
What the fuck does this even mean? Is it basically like cutting yourself in the essence of legality or something?
Consider also that Germany is a federal republic and enforcement varies from state to state. In Berlin, as I mentioned earlier, cops will not bother you for small amounts, and you can smoke openly in streets and parks in relative safety. You still have to buy it illegally though, but dealers are easy to find and quality is pretty decent overall.

Self-harm isn't a crime, and consuming drugs is considered self-harm.

Whoa, hey man~, like, it's still there. They're just taking it a little slower, man~.
What the fuck does this even mean? Is it basically like cutting yourself in the essence of legality or something?
It means that if the police catch you high, you have no problems. If they catch you high with the doob still in your goober you're in trouble.
Self-harm isn't a crime, and consuming drugs is considered self-harm.
Labeling it as "self-harm" makes doing drugs sound emo and lame.
Maybe this is what D.A.R.E. should've done in schools here :v:
Mostly fiscally conservative rather than socially, if I'm not mistaken?
It really depends. It may be more accurate to say that this place is 'traditionally culturally very liberal'.
Most people just plain don't care whatsoever what you do in your free time as long (and only¹ as long) as you don't drag others into it against their will.
¹Apparently we're somewhat notorious for this.

god i wish we had german's conservatism's somedays, here we're stuck with fiscally anarchist and socially regressive
The Green party's about to get greener...
Living somewhere it has already been legalized, it’s hard to paint a picture of just how benign the results are. I’m not sure what we were even thinking when it was criminalized. It’s like nobody realized how low the stakes really were. Some dispensaries are really top knotch too. I barely smoke anymore but go Germany.

It's almost as if a small retinue of people with global power and influence went out of their way to demonize a relatively harmless substance in the name of personal gain.
Hell will freeze over before CDU/CSU agree to this and it isn't a particularely important topic for either of the smaller parties.
Danke.
