Purdue University announced Thursday (April 27) the creation of a new public university that will further expand access to higher education. The initiative is meant to address two striking new realities: the need for postsecondary education for working adults and others unsuited to traditional campus study, and the explosive growth of online technologies as a means of delivering education to students of all types.
To launch the new university, Purdue will acquire Kaplan University and its institutional operations and assets, including its 15 campuses and learning centers, 32,000 students, 3,000 employees, and decades of experience in distance education. All existing Kaplan University students and faculty will transition to the new university, which will use the Purdue name in some fashion not yet identified.
It's interesting to see a public land grant university buying out a for profit online one, but I'm excited to see how this turns out. Daniels, the president of Purdue, has done some amazing things already like freezing tuition since 2012, implementing income share agreements for paying off college, and introducing a polytechnic high school in downtown Indianapolis that provides direct admit to the university for those that graduate.
Hopefully they launch a cheap online course for students who don't have time to go to college full time

don't laugh at our optimism
Hopeful and interesting, but I'll have to wait to see what's actually done. I work full time and go to college full time, and I'm forced to pay out of pocket for whatever my financial aid doesn't cover.
It sucks.

i normally would agree but purdue seems rather progressive

Oh, so now we'll have an online college that isn't a diploma mill? Sweet.

Purdue is fairly expensive already though
Yeah I imagine we'll probably either massively fuck this up or do a fantastic job at running it. As a student at Purdue I've come to notice there isn't much of an in-between.
I seriously have to say it: when I saw the thread title earlier, I thought this was about an online university being bought out by Perdue the chicken company.
