Windows 7 and 8.1 is not able to receive updates on new processor generations anymore

Symptoms
When you try to scan or download updates through Windows Update, you receive the following error message:
Unsupported Hardware
Your PC uses a processor that isn’t supported on this version of Windows and you won’t receive updates.
Additionally, you may see an error message on the Windows Update window that resembles the following:
Windows could not search for new updates
An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.
Error(s) found:
Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
Cause
This error occurs because new processor generations require the latest Windows version for support. For example, Windows 10 is the only Windows version that is supported on the following processor generations:
Intel seventh (7th)-generation processors
AMD “Bristol Ridge”
Qualcomm “8996"
Because of how this support policy is implemented, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 devices that have a seventh generation or a later generation processor may no longer be able to scan or download updates through Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
Resolution
We recommend that you upgrade Windows 8.1-based and Window 7-based computers to Windows 10 if those computers have a processor that is from any of the following generations:
Intel seventh (7th)-generation "Intel Core" processor or a later generation
AMD seventh (7th)-generation (“Bristol Ridge") processor or a later generation
Qualcomm “8996" processor or a later generation

So uh... intentional to force more upgrades or just not able to?
Intel stated they're not supporting older OS's.
Windows 7 I kinda understand as it's starting to get pretty old but windows 8.1 is less than 3 years old isn't it? Seems a bit odd
How is a processor able to stop the is from being updated?
I guess I'll just stay on the sixth gen Intel for a while then.
I only use W7 for my desktop games and it fits my needs just fine. I don't have to worry about setting all the online features to off or having to configure settings so Microsoft doesn't spy on my habits and try to advertise to me.
You can't really support archaic products forever

Chipset drivers afaik
You can't really support archaic products forever
This, they've always done this actually.
Though, not supporting 8.1 is a little bit odd and quick.

Not to mention to decision to drop support was on intel's end
Long as it will still run IDGAF.
Good thing my i7 is 9 years old!

Is this an indication that Intel is migrating away from the x86 instruction set and it's 64-bit extensions then? That I can totally understand because then it means Intel or the software vendor have to develop a compatibility layer.
BUT if they're using this as an arbitrary method to force people to upgrade instead of running older operating systems on newer hardware (I'm going to NOT include myself here or anyone else using a machine at home because that isn't the point of what I'm trying to say) then in about a decade it's gonna really badly fuck over the embedded market.
You know, those people several million dollars invested and a thousand or so kiosks in where they upgraded the core machine because the original hardware couldn't be sourced anymore but the kiosk and related software on top of that was never updated by the vendor.
I am seeing machines running 2000 and XP finally being retired but Windows 7 machines are taking their place for reasons that outside the business world a gamer cannot comprehend.
Losing support for an OS as new as 8.1 sucks, but as it is basically W10 but worse, I'd imagine Vista likewise lost support quicker due to being a worse W7. I'don't know if that's actually what happened though.
It makes zero sense to use latest and greatest CPU while being on 8.1

If you are still running on 8.1 because you were either too lazy or naive to jump on windows 10 when Microsoft was offering it for free for like a year, it's your fuck up
Eh I guess when I finally upgrade from my 2500k I'll try 10.. although I don't really want to

But I like 8.1 much more than 10 and want to keep using it when I upgrade my system
Pure laziness will keep me on Win 7 until I have literally no choice.

We're not moving off x86 for home computers. That's just not happening.
Once they make me a better Win7 then I'll consider upgrading OS.
Win10 can die in fire.

..why?

Windows 10 is already much better than Windows 7.
Good luck waiting though.

So then it's Intel and Microsoft using their monopoly to force a planned obsolescence program nobody wants?
Does the new Ryzen chips also feature this limitation?

Okay, now that's truly bullshit.
..why?
Once you shove all the Metro app garbage aside, it's basically windows 7 with a start screen instead of a start menu, and a much better task manager. I like 8.1's square UI style a lot more too.
The only thing I don't like is that start-screen search is soooooooo slow, but I hardly ever use it so it's not a big deal.
So once you shove the metro stuff out of sight you never have to deal with it, and it's basically windows 7 at that point.

I thought that Windows 10's square UI style wasn't that different compared to 8.1, although it's been a while since I used Windows 8. I would've thought people on Windows 8 would want to transition to Windows 10 as it merged the good parts of 7 and 8 together.
I can't say I blame anyone for not wanting another Windows XP scenario.
I think an artificial block is kind of shitty though.
Yeah Windows 10 is great, I love the ads in the file explorer and being constantly spied on by daddy Microsoft, who knows what other great ideas they will come up with next.
Although really this news make me quite happy, the more people they piss off the more people are going to consider alternative operating systems, I certainly have no regrets switching my main OS to Linux.

Linux has had decades to take off. I hate to break it to you, but it ain't happening.
