This designation is not meant as an award but as recognition of those Texans who had uncommon impact, which can be a positive or negative impact, during the past year.
Well, I didn’t expect that. Of all people
Similar to "Person of the Year" from Time, which was never supposed to be praising, but instead "who was super influential". Hence why they chose Hitler, because love him or hate him (hopefully the latter), he had made some pretty impactful choices on Europe and the world as a whole

Even though it’s not meant to praise them it still feels like it indirectly does. Kind of awkward.
I don’t know how I feel about that. Even though it’s not meant to praise them it still feels like it indirectly does. Kind of awkward.
The full title is "Most Influential Person of the Year", not "Person of the Year". In that context, it's a much more analytical title than an accolade. As a news periodical, TIME is qualified to comment on who they consider to be the most influential person of the year, as the majority of their own headlines and articles will be dominated by that one person. Additionally, it's a useful metric because it's a comment on what person or persons are currently the seats of power in the world. When TIME chooses multiple people or a class of people (such as "You (Content Creators)" in 2006), it's indicative of the growing decentralization of power on things such as the media, where the unknown individual has much greater ability to influence media or national discussion than 30 years ago, thanks to the rise of platforms on the internet like YouTube or Wikipedia
So it's like when you buy Time's Person of the Year but it's a Chinese clone? :v: At least they're honest about him in the article
I feel like he was made influential by the MSM to begin with. Stop talking about him.
I feel like he was made influential by the MSM to begin with. Orrin Hatch also got Utah person of the year for a complete lack of integrity.
I guess he did have a uncommon impact, pretty centralized to the right side of his face
What an embarrassment on this state
I don’t know how I feel about that. Even though it’s not meant to praise them it still feels like it indirectly does. Kind of awkward.
it puts a spotlight on him, and it's a title with more positive connotations than negative ones (even with the supposed neutrality of it in mind) idk how i feel about it, part of me knows i probably wouldn't give him the recognition if it was up to me. but i also know you shouldn't ignore a problem if you want to solve it, and spencer's influence has been pretty problematic. the question is whether this works better in bringing the problem to light than it does in giving spencer even more influence
