A history professor has sparked outrage after claiming he nearly threw up when he saw an airline passenger give up their first-class seat for a uniformed soldier. George Ciccariello-Maher, an assistant professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia, wrote on Twitter: "Some guy gave up his first class seat for a uniformed soldier. People are thanking him. I'm trying not to vomit or yell about Mosul." Mr Ciccariello-Maher made headlines last winter for "satirically" saying that "all I want for Christmas is white genocide". Why has literally every verified twitter post I've seen lately been some stupid/callous/racist/virtue signalling shit
Why has literally every verified twitter post I've seen lately been some stupid/callous/racist/virtue signalling shit
Because the amount of douches and righteous SJW's have risen dramatically over the last 5 years I wonder if he'll make up another excuse for this tweet, or actually stick with it.
Come on, what's not to like about this? The guy speaks his mind! Political correctness has gone mad these days. Seriously though, this isn't news.
Yeah, this guy is a piece of shit but it isn't news
Im amazed he hasnt lost his job yet.
Im amazed he hasnt lost his job yet.
Everyone knows what would happen. That's why.
Im amazed he hasnt lost his job yet.
He'd probably claim it as a violation of free speech, discrimination, racism etc. if he got fired for these tweets. Not to mention the public outcry that would come as a result.
Why would you yell at an individual soldier for the actions of his commanders? It's stupid, he couldn't influence anything and it's likely that he's from a different branch of the military altogether. It's the same thing as calling returning soldiers from Vietnam babykillers, don't blame the soldiers, blame the generals.
He'd probably claim it as a violation of free speech, discrimination, racism etc. if he got fired for these tweets. It's not about war being bad, or the dehumanization of military forces, or war crimes, it's about I'M IMPORTANT BECAUSE I'M CONTROVERSIALLY OUTRAGED OVER (sensitive topic not allowed to be criticized) Twitter is designed to be the fastest and easiest way to vent the first thing that comes to mind - it's literally a megaphone for people who think before they speak, and it's designed to make sure you can't clarify what you mean with its character cap. Basically, it's an out-of-context interjection announcement system.

I absolutely agree with you that twitter has been turned into a tool for virtue signalling. Which is why the public outcry could easily spin out of control. It's easy to manipulate a narrative on twitter (we saw this both with Anita Sarkeesian/Gamergate and the US elections). Which means this professor, and I'll use that word lightly considering this guy and his outrageous statements, would easily be able to make himself a victim, gaining the support of others.
While I do not think that people in the military should deserve automatically respect, this is just being a stupid asshole. What an ass.
Why has literally every verified twitter post I've seen lately been some stupid/callous/racist/virtue signalling shit
this
Because the amount of douches and righteous SJW's have risen dramatically over the last 5 years I wonder if he'll make up another excuse for this tweet, or actually stick with it.
and that twitter is EXTREMELY left wing with most non-left accounts not getting verified even if they pass like 250k follows or shadowbanned
Why has literally every verified twitter post I've seen lately been some stupid/callous/racist/virtue signalling shit
Probably because stupid shit gets attention, things like this get ridiculed more.
I think he's being hyperbolic
I think he's being hyperbolic
Who cares, its something you keep to yourself. And I am not a person who automatically respects military figures whether they are from my country or not. It just seems way too silly to say out loud.
It's Ciccariello, the man is a hack, and a walking joke. He shouldn't be taken seriously.
Who cares, its something you keep to yourself. And I am not a person who automatically respects military figures whether they are from my country or not.
Maybe in a pre-internet age that would happen, but people tweet when they poop nowadays.
Which is utterly stupid and needs to be discouraged. A lot of people should take a class in " what not to put on the internet." This would be one of the examples. Along with wickedusers posts of course.
Maybe in a pre-internet age that would happen, but people tweet when they poop nowadays.
One of the biggest problems with social media is this culture of over-sharing it has created. (In my opinion, at least)
Not only over-sharing, but also the fact that a lot of people seem to disregard their common sense when they use social media. That, along with the spread of straight up propaganda with no sources to back up their postulates. (This happens way too often. Also outside of social media).
IMO these people are the left's equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church.
It bothers me that people equate it to the left at all. The left is a legitimate political stance, these people are just idiots and assholes. Then again, I don't know what to think anymore given so much of "the left" accepts these losers. Why are we/they so susceptible to virtue signalling?
I find it hilarious that anyone would give up their seat for a soldier but this tweet is still stupid.
Must we give this flamboyant attention-seeking asshole any more attention?
Not only over-sharing, but also the fact that a lot of people seem to disregard their common sense when they use social media.
That's always happened, you're just more aware of propaganda now because of the internet.
That is one of the benefits of the internet that counteracts one of the downsides. While propaganda unfortunately has a new way of spreading, facts are also easier to research and look up as well. If you have critical thinking skills you'll be able to find the truth a lot easier than you could in the past. The problem is then teaching individuals critical thinking skills - something that I feel isn't thought well enough, from my experience of the Irish education system.
The problem is then teaching individuals critical thinking skills - something that I feel isn't thought well enough, from my experience of the Irish education system.
Especially in the US. We're generally friendly and charitable (at least in person), but I'll be damned if we have a shred of self-awareness or critical thinking ability.
Nope, most places have a social media policy. Violate that policy and say bye bye.
And besides, 'free speech' only means you can't be arrested
