A County Championship game was abandoned after an arrow fired from outside the ground landed on the field.
Spectators watching Surrey's match with Middlesex were asked to take cover and the players taken off after the crossbow bolt was shot into The Oval.
Armed police carried out a "controlled evacuation" of the ground after the incident was reported at 16:35 BST.
A Met Police statement said the incident "is not being treated as terrorism-related".
No-one was injured, while the force added that there have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

"I can't stress enough what a dangerous weapon this arrow was - 18 inches long with a long metal tip. It could so easily have hurt someone and it landed eight yards from about five players."
You've got to be pretty fucked up to be firing a crossbow in a built up area, indiscriminately or otherwise.
Theres a park a block away from this place, someone probably did the old "what happens when I fire super high" thing basically any child does the first time they get to fire a bow

I don't know about the law in Britain, but I know firing stuff upwards is illegal here for this very type of circumstance. If I ever give my child any type of ranged weapon, toy or not, rule #2 I'm drilling into their head is "don't fire it upwards," with #1 being the classic "don't aim it at anyone."

I'm not sure if crossbows fall under firearms, but if you're shooting and your projectiles leave the boundary of where you have permission to shoot, you're committing a firearms offense
Edit: I looked it up, there's basically no laws for crossbows other than don't sell em to kids, don't hunt with it and don't be a dick with it
The French are after revenge! Agincourt round 2, crossbows vs longbows
I hope we will discover over the next few days who was behind this senseless and barbaric terrorist attack

I know in a world of guns crossbows probably seem dated and lame but a crossbow bolt of that size could be a similar weight to a very high calibre bullet and it's sharpened.
