• Denmark gets its first wild wolf pack in 200 years
A wolf pack is roaming wild in Denmark for the first time in more than 200 years after a young female wolf journeyed 500km from Germany. Male wolves have been seen in Denmark since 2012 and the new female could produce cubs this spring in farmland in west Jutland after two wolves were filmed together last autumn. It is further evidence that the wolf is returning to well-peopled landscapes after centuries of persecution, with wolf packs also re-establishing themselves in France and Germany and individuals sighted in Holland and even Luxembourg. Before the new population, Denmark’s last wolf was killed in 1813. “We expect that they will have cubs this year or the next,” said Peter Sunde, a senior researcher at Aarhus University. “People were very surprised when wolves first appeared in Denmark but they are highly mobile and are just as adaptable to cultural landscapes as foxes are. The only problem historically is that we killed them.” DNA from two faeces samples have confirmed that the female wolf came from a pack 25km south of Berlin in Germany before travelling to north-west Denmark, probably leaving her family group last spring to do so.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/may/04/denmark-gets-its-first-wild-wolf-pack-in-200-years
Time to update the map
:toot: Although there has been a lot of drama about the wolves over the last handful of years here, I'm sure it'll be an interesting development. These news are actually 2-ish months old but it's still neat.
It sure would be nice if we could reintroduce wolves to those red areas in the future. In the US, for one, deer overpopulation is a problem is a lot of states, and while hunting certainly can help with that, it's the lack of natural predators which makes it an issue in the first place. Destruction to crops and attacks on livestock would still be an issue, of course, but forested area has been growing by quite a lot in much of Europe and the northeastern US, and that gives them more area to roam. I'm sure this has been proposed more than once before, though, so the fact that it hasn't been implemented yet probably means it's not quite as easy as just throwing a bunch of wolves out into some wooded area.
Oh, everyone here was shitting their pants over the wolf returning a few years back. Nice to see us get a ladywolf at last, though. Now we just need to make serious work of our plans to reintroduce the European Bison to more than just Bornholm, and Denmark will have rad nature again!
It's fucking neat, but I expect a lot of farmers demanding they either be offed, or at least that they be kept in check. There's already been numerous cases of sheep being killed randomly around the time the wolves showed up.

"The only problem historically is that we killed them.” That does seem like a problem.

But I have already sworn to shit in the mailbox of any farm owned by any landowner who shoots one of these wolves. It's like they huffed too much tractor diesel to get that they arent stray and aggressive dogs and are thus not under the jurisdiction of any form of pest control or the dog law(thanks fuck they are not, the danish dog law is one of the worst examples of canid opression) The wolves howl under danish skies once again! As much as I dislike greenblacks that would be like the only sensible thing to do. Not that I encourage it or anything.

Wolves are a pest, I hope it gets exterminated asap
I'd be amazed if these wolves last 5 years without getting shot.

Kind of funny how it's generally people in the cities who wants them back. We got rid of them for a reason
Then they're afraid for no reason, because unless they're literally starving, wolves will do anything they can to avoid being in contact with humans.
I think people would rather not have the risk
I think people would rather not have the risk
They shouldn't live in rural areas then. You've got a much higher chance of being attacked by a boar than by a wolf.
Wolves are more afraid of humans than we are of them, usually they keep their distance well away from humans. Livestock is a problem yes, but that's why you e-fence up your shit, setup traps on the periphery, etc. And there's too many deer which arguably ruins the ecosystem just as bad as livestock and much worse than wolves. There's a balance to be had.

Petition your governments to relax regulations for those out in the country/rural areas.
Found the problem. Petition your governments to relax regulations for those out in the country/rural areas.
Alternatively, just dispel the hoax of man-eating wolves and advise farmers to put fences around their livestock.
Found the problem. I am all for starting an all out fucking civil war to prevent the loss of the danish wolf.

It's wolves dude. They aren't maneaters nor are they friendly forest creatures. They are canids, they are pack hunters, and they are opportunistic predators. They will have no qualms with killing livestock, pets or even children. I would rather see a dead wolf than a dead child. And I've been tracking the possibility of reintroducing wolves to Illinois for years, they would be extremely beneficial to our environment.

I often hear stories on TV of wolves killing several sheep/live stock and then leaving them to root. This is unusual behavior IMO since I never heard of predators killing animals in the wild just for sports, they usually kill only what they need for food. Anyone here know more about this ? Could it be rabid dogs instead, or maybe rabis infected wolves, a hoax, or maybe documentary films skipped that part of predators life. It's just unusual.
They shouldn't live in rural areas then. You've got a much higher chance of being attacked by a boar than by a wolf.
Yes everyone should move their families into the city
They shouldn't live in rural areas then. You've got a much higher chance of being attacked by a boar than by a wolf.
And by not re-introducing wolves you have one less potentially dangerous animal to worry about. I'd still rather deal with a herbivore than a pack of smart and hungry predators.
Wolves are a pest, I hope it gets exterminated asap
You're a cat lover, aren't you.
Yes everyone should move their families into the city
Those who don't want to risk encountering dangerous animals? Well, yeah.
And by not re-introducing wolves you have one less potentially dangerous animal to worry about. I'd rather get attacked by a fox than charged by a rhino.

They're huge(150-200kg for males) bundles of muscle that are practically impossible to stop without a rifle.
