Papa John's blames NFL leadership for lackluster pizza sales as shares sink more than 11%
Papa John himself slammed NFL leadership on Wednesday, blaming the organization for lackluster sales at his pizza restaurants in the third quarter.
John Schnatter, the founder and CEO of Papa John's, said the league and its leadership "hurt" the company by not resolving the player protests that have been taking place during the National Anthem.
"The NFL has been a long and valued partner over the years, but we are certainly disappointed that NFL and its leadership did not resolve the ongoing situation to the satisfaction of all parties," Schnatter said during an earnings call Wednesday. "This should have been nipped in the bud a year and a half ago."
Papa John's, which has been the official pizza of the NFL since 2010, said the combination of declining NFL viewership and negative consumer sentiment associated with the league caused sales in the third quarter to slump.
Shares of the pizza chain fell more than 11 percent on Wednesday.
"The NFL has hurt us and, more importantly, by not resolving the current debacle to the [players' and owners'] satisfaction, NFL leadership has hurt Papa John's," Schnatter said.
"Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership," he said.
In North America, same-store sales grew 1 percent, falling short of analyst expectations of a 1.4 percent rise, according to Street Account. And the company expects this trend to continue into the next quarter.
"The NFL situation has persisted in the pressure that it's applying to our sales that has bled into the start of the fourth quarter," Steve Ritchie, chief operating officer, said during the conference call.

someone should slam papa johns for having such garbage-ass pizza
I think the problem is more that your pizza fucking SUCKS
their pizza is also a bit much in the price range too. plenty of alternatives that are just as good (depending on your opinion), if not better, and cost less.
I guess being from Indiana but I love Papa John's. It's 1000x better than the turd sandwich Pizza Hut.
Every time I think about this guy, I remember this video where he tries to come across as a relatable dad as he walks into his Roman Colosseum of a house.

I actually think its because a piece of salted cardboard has more flavor than your pizza
Edit: Also you're a huge piece of shit for saying you would rather close stores(thus destroying jobs) than rise the price of your pizza by 25 DAMN cents so that you can pay for the healthcare of your employees

I always thought Papa John's was the best of the big pizza chains, but living in a big city there's always a million local joints you can get pizza from that are cheaper and better so we never bother with 'em.
I don't really understand how Papa Johns pizza could be classified as "sucking". It tastes pretty good, lots of different toppings for different tastes, different options. They are expensive though.
I was wondering why their prices on everything randomly went up. The little spice packets went from free to 20 cents a pop, fuck that :v:

I disagree with the first post, but I completely agree with the second. In my country, Papa John's is the second best franchise of pizza, but it's incredibly pricey
It's a shame that there's like two Domino's in the entire city. They really stepped up their game this year

Really? I always found Papa John's to be the cheapest around. They are almost always having a 50% off sale or something.
I usually get Giordanos pizza.
A bit more on the topic at hand: It sounds like Papa John here is making bad excuses as to why pizza sales are declining at his line of pizza places.

Dude's pretty exactly as out of touch as he seems, he's like the epitome of 'old white rich conservative man'
Papa John is the reason punks exist
The sauce cups are still tiny and everything is overpriced in comparison to the other major pizza chains.

In reality, John I of the House Papa; King of the Professional Sport's Food, Offerer of Coupons, Unburnt, The Father of Pizza, is angry because his Crowned Prince & Heir, Bo, the first of his name, is not going to get to inherit that extra money needed to import alligators for his medieval-style moat he had planned for his luxurious manor.
I for one, just like you, look forward to more antics related to the video like the one you posted.

All Papa wants is for them not to bend the knee. :v:
I ordered from Papa John's once...ONCE.
I confused them for Papa Murphy's which is a place near me(no idea if it's just in my city or if it's a nationwide thing) that sells gourmet pizza you cook at home so I thought my pizza was ready in 7 minutes because it wasn't cooked, and I also thought I paid more because it used better ingredients but nah, I just got ripped off for cheap ass pizza that was sitting under a hot lamp

Company who's CEO donated to Trump's campaign and has criticized Obamacare blames NFL protests for lower sales. Really makes you think.

Well I am joking about how much of a megalomaniac he appears to be.
Papa Johns is horseshit pizza which seems like a more realistic explanation for their sales plummeting into the crapper.
Between the 3 largest pizza chains I can think of, Dominoes, Pizza hut, and Papa johns, Papa John's is the best. I've been eating pizza almost everyday since I was in 5th grade. I used to love Dominoes and Pizzahut to death but over the last like 10 years their pizza has gone down hill(really tho, all have slowly gotten worse). Idk what the fuck Dominoes did to their pizza, but it always smells like rotten ass, its so bad in fact I can smell it and recognize it without seeing it. Its the most cardboard tasting pizza I've ever had. Pizza hut used to be really fucking good, and they must have fucked with the formula cause its not as good as it used to be, dominoes is to cardboard as pizza hut is to paper. The only thing I buy from Papa Johns anymore is their thin crust pizza, because their regular pizzas aren't that good anymore. The only one true pizza are those newyork style pizzas that are really big that they have in the mall, or wherever they pop up.

When Papa Johns is successful it's because of the strong entrepreneur spirit of it's owner, a spirit that can only be nursed by small government who doesn't force companies to do things like provide healthcare of living wages.
But when Papa Johns, which has declined in quality in recent years and frequently ranks below most of it's direct franchise competitors, faces a sales shortfall well obviously its not the fault of their leadership but the NFL's leadership, because somehow they are the reason Papa Johns can't sell his pizza.
Seems to me this is just the free market in action and Johnny doesn't like it when he loses.

I think I'm justified in saying that that guy lives in a castle when he has his own moat.
Papa Johns has the best regular pizza among the franchises here, but why would I buy their boring old pizza when I can buy a deep dish pizza from Little Caesars for like half the price, or get a frozen pizza that's about as good for half the price? It's all economics.
End police violence or papa john gets it!
I guess being from Indiana but I love Papa John's. It's 1000x better than the turd sandwich Pizza Hut.
pizza hut isn't amazing but pizza hut's stuffed crust on its own is better than anything you can get at papa johns. also pizza hut has the best chicken wings
i have literally never seen a papa john's in my life and convinced the entire thing is a psy-op
Little Caesars went from being card-board ass to surprisingly good quality, and it beats frozen pizzas while still costing insanely cheap, I'd almost say its better quality than the other main-line pizza chains
