• The CG Actors in ‘Logan’ You Never Knew Were There
When Rogue One was released late last year, it ignited a new discussion about the digital resurrection of deceased actors, in that case, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, and it sparked debate about the role of digital actors in filmmaking. That debate is likely to continue in several other films this year, most recently with the creation of a digital double for Hugh Jackman and a new mutant Laura (Dafne Keen) for a few scenes in Logan. After being given the task of re-creating cg heads for Keen and Jackman, Image Engine’s team immediately knew what it was up for. “Everyone knows Logan, for instance, and that’s the biggest challenge,” Image Engine visual effects supervisor Martyn Culpitt told Cartoon Brew. “We’re literally looking at a real Hugh and a digital Hugh side by side in some shots.” The studio had completed plenty of digital human-type work before, but mostly as either human-esque creatures or as cg stunt doubles – never full-frame actors intended to be indistinguishable from the real actor. That meant Image Engine had to ramp up on their digital human pipeline, while also capitalizing on work they’d previously done in the area. “We basically had to build the whole system from scratch,” said Culpitt. Holy shit, that's impressive.
Using CG faces for stunt scenes is fine, CG Peter Cushing in Rogue One was abysmal.
We're slowing exiting the last 5% of the Uncanney Valley in CG, which is 95% of the work. Looking forward to when this doesn't cost millions to produce.
You know, they're really not even noticeable at all until you point them out. Which is a very good thing. That's exactly how it should be. Not once did I notice CG models for the actors when I saw the movie.
unreal engine 5
Using CG faces for stunt scenes is fine, CG Peter Cushing in Rogue One was abysmal.
A lot of people I talked to didn't even realize Tarkin was CG. It only looked weird to me for like the first scene. So i think people's milage may vary.
Impressive for computer graphics, but bad for practical effects.
It's pretty obvious in the screenshots but I never noticed it in the film.
Impressive for computer graphics, but bad for practical effects.
How so? If anything this is the exact kind of task where CG enhances a practical effect. For actors like Jackman who aren't allowed to risk doing stunts, this allows for stronger film continuity with less cutaways/attempts to hide the stunt double during practical stunts
Even though it's possible, I still don't believe that hair is CG, it's just too good.
Using CG faces for stunt scenes is fine, CG Peter Cushing in Rogue One was abysmal.
I think it was better than the alternatives: having a new actor or not having him at all.
Huh, I thought one in Rouge one looked a bit too unrealistic with it's skin but this? I didn't know. That's awesome work!
noticed some highlight differences on Dafne's model but other than that its fucking 1:1
A lot of people I talked to didn't even realize Tarkin was CG. It only looked weird to me for like the first scene. So i think people's milage may vary.
I was stuck on how noticeable it was the whole film.
Wait was the CG on for the whole duration of the movie or only during heavy action sequences?
Wait was the CG on for the whole duration of the movie or only during heavy action sequences?
Only during certain scenes. Plenty of scenes with the original actors.
Wait was the CG on for the whole duration of the movie or only during heavy action sequences?
what does your mind tell you?
Wait was the CG on for the whole duration of the movie or only during heavy action sequences?
why would they do this for the whole movie
I think it was better than the alternatives: having a new actor or not having him at all.
When they first showed him he was in a reflection obscured in darkness, which looked great and I expected it to stay that way. They shouldn't have gone all the way imo
I think it was better than the alternatives: having a new actor or not having him at all.
why's having a new actor a bad alternative?
why's having a new actor a bad alternative?
Because Peter Cushing was a fairly unique looking person. Just finding someone to replace him would be even more jarring or you wouldn't even realize it's the same character. [t]http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/7/79/Tarkin_DS.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070114034159[/t]
Why does different have to mean jarring? We already accept so many changes that come with the passage of time and make modern SW visually distinct from the OT. Sure, the overall aesthetic is still Star Wars, but then you've got prop and effect quality. CG instead of miniatures. Filming techniques. Why draw the line at Cushing? Can you seriously not accept a different actor playing the same character?
I feel like I noticed it a few times with the girl but never with Hugh. Very impressive; I usually notice stuff like this right away.
Even though it's possible, I still don't believe that hair is CG, it's just too good.
each individual hair strand modeled and each with it's own high resolution materials the renderfarms caught fire twice and the modeler shot himself the next day :v:

When you see his face in the original trilogy you recognize him immediately. And Rogue One took place in that time period, so to replace him completely would be jarring because it makes it obvious that you're looking at an actor playing a role, instead of a character. The CG wasn't perfect but it maintained the character's look and recognizability.
Even though it's possible, I still don't believe that hair is CG, it's just too good.
Realistic CG Hair is actually not that hard to do when you have knowledge of so, it's hard yes but not as complicated as you think
Relevant yet again: The only CG I didn't like in the movie was [sp]at the very end when the children were using their powers. [/sp]
probably helps that the stunt actor already looks quite a bit like hugh jackman

It's pretty jarring when a character suddenly completely changes appearance for no reason.
