(AP) — Attention Halo Nation, “Halo: Combat Evolved” is in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. The science fiction shooter game that enthralled a legion of fans after its 2001 launch with the Xbox system is one of four games to be inducted into the hall Thursday. “Donkey Kong,” ″Pokemon Red and Green” and “Street Fighter II” round out the young hall’s third class of honorees. All will be on permanent display at The Strong museum in Rochester, New York, where the hall of fame was established in 2015 to recognize an industry that the Entertainment Software Association said generated $30.4 billion in revenue in the U.S. last year. “Until ‘Halo’s’ launch, the most successful shooters required a personal computer and the precision offered by a high-quality mouse,” said Strong Associate Curator Shannon Symonds. “‘Halo’ proved a console could be just as effective, if not better, than a PC.”
https://www.apnews.com/79d438b3f3754d4a8a1d50c0d39ff627/'Halo:-Combat-Evolved'-among-4-video-game-HOF-inductees
Halo definitely deserves it. Rest in piece, old times.
Why Pokémon Green, though?
Why Pokémon Green, though?
It is one of the originals, when the games released in Japan they released as Red and Green, Blue was released later.
Why Pokémon Green, though?
Because it was released before Blue
Why Pokémon Green, though?
Because it's the original release.
It is one of the originals, when the games released in Japan they released as Red and Green, Blue was released later.
My mistake, then. I was convinced Red and Blue came first, and Green and Yellow came afterwards.
Also from the article
An international committee of video game scholars and journalists chose the World Video Game Hall of Fame’s class of 2017 from among 12 finalists that also included: “Final Fantasy VII,” ″Microsoft Windows Solitaire,” ″Mortal Kombat,” ″Myst,” ″Portal,” ″Resident Evil,” ″Tomb Raider” and “Wii Sports.”
Almost all of these should be in imo
So they're putting in Halo but not Half-Life 1? I can see the argument for Halo CE being in but if we're talking about how revolutionary it was and how much influence it had on the video game industry, HL1 ostensibly deserves it more. If DooM is the grandfather of modern FPS games then HL1 is the father. And on that point most of id's IPs have a game that deserve a spot; Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, Commander Keen, etc.
I thought it was 6 inductions a year?
Mentioning portal but not hl2 oh ok
Halo is so good.
“‘Halo’ proved a console could be just as effective, if not better, than a PC.”
thems fighting words.
thems fighting words.
I read that just now and went "now wait a gosh darn minute there!" Thats just bullshit.

And it single-handedly put Microsoft and the Xbox on the map. That being said, HL1 undoubtedly deserves a spot of course.
I read that just now and went "now wait a gosh darn minute there!" Thats just bullshit.
Well it was true at the time, until Half-Life 2 came a few years later and bulldozed consoles.
Also from the article Almost all of these should be in imo
The first Final Fantasy should be since it revived a dying company, not really 7.
The first Final Fantasy should be since it revived a dying company, not really 7.
As painful as it is to admit, 7 made JRPGs popular. If it hadn't been most of the JRPGs we know would have either never left Japan at all or had stopped outside of Japan at part 1.

The one thing you can really attribute to 7 was that it jumpstarted playstation sales. 1 is a much more culturally significant game
7 made them popular in the West. It didnt start the genre.
Looking at what I typed, I realize that I DO come off like I am implying 7 started JRPGs. Totally not what I meant, and I do agree how 1 saved Square. I say all this having played Dragon Warrior back when it was new to the States in the early 90's and having read a bit about stuff before then.
Halo is so good.
It's okay. Definitely a game series with a multiplayer focus.
It's okay. Definitely a game series with a multiplayer focus.
Not at all. Halo's always focused on its campaigns.
It's okay. Definitely a game series with a multiplayer focus.
Highly depends on which one you're talking about. Maybe the latest ones but Halo 1 really had the campaign as the strong suit.
It's okay. Definitely a game series with a multiplayer focus.
Objectively untrue.

It gets better later in the series but man the original is rough in some areas. [editline]a[/editline] And I say this knowing damn well that as it stands it's up there as my favorite of the series
It's okay. Definitely a game series with a multiplayer focus.
Post 3 I agree that's the direction they took but Halo really changed the map for fps design, without it we'd still have shit controls on consoles
Post 3 I agree that's the direction they took but Halo really changed the map for fps design, without it we'd still have shit controls on consoles
Sure, but being incredible for a platform at the time doesn't make it incredible in general. I'm not denying it should be in the Hall, there's good reasons for it, but I think of it like I do Quake: it's worth a playthrough to experience it, but here in 2017 it doesn't feel all that special even though at release it was the fuckin' bee's knees.
how were donkey kong and street fighter 2 not already in the hall of fame

[editline]a[/editline] And I say this knowing damn well that as it stands it's up there as my favorite of the series
Single player focus isnt just about gameplay or level design; story is a big factor. Halo's story, Halo games prior to Reach at least, had very good and interesting stories that tied together well. Plus, the first halo did a fantastic job of varying the gameplay with new enviroments, weapons, vehicles, and enemies throughout the game. If you thought Halo was a hallway sim, you didnt get very far into it.
I'm surprised they're giving Halo all the credit After all, Halo has GoldenEye to thank for bringing FPS to consoles (or, at the very least, making FPS popular on consoles)
