The New England Holocaust Memorial in downtown Boston was vandalized Monday night by a 17-year-old who was immediately tackled by bystanders and held until police arrived, police said. The teen hurled a rock through a glass panel etched with numbers, representing those tattooed on the arms of the Jews and others in the concentration camps operated by Nazi Germany, police said. The panels are affixed to six glass towers, each 54 feet high. It was the second act of vandalism in less than three months at the site, located in Carmen Park near historic Faneuil Hall. The suspect in Monday’s incident was charged with willful destruction of property.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/08/15/teen-tackled-by-bystanders-after-vandalizing-boston-holocaust-memorial/
The memorial opened in 1995 and had not been vandalized until June.
I want to think it's just a very convenient coincidence but I'm not too sure, honestly. We've seen this type of behaviour rise over the past months, so it's not far-fetched to say there's a correlation.
Antisemites feeling vindicated by the current political climate etc. Fucking atrocious.
As part of his sentence this teen should be forced to sit through a viewing of footage of the camps and survivors' accounts to understand the gravity of what he's done. Perhaps be placed in a mock concentration camp for a day to give some perspective.
I was with you until the mock concentration camp part
I meant like a recreation of the conditions of the camps to walk through to give an idea of just how shitty they were.

I say stick with the history lesson, that has some actual merits. "Mock concentration camp" is... no.
Maybe place him in a mock gas chamber while we're at it
we can mock murder his family and friends in front of him too
Ooh, what about making him dig a mock grave? [editline]15th August 2017[/editline] For real though, this should be punishment enough.
For real though, this should be punishment enough.
For anyone who can't read German like me and wanted to know what the caption says: "German prisoners of war held in an American camp watch a film about German concentration camps."
Antisemites feeling vindicated by the current political climate etc. Fucking atrocious.
Considering the perpetrator is only 17 it's more likely they're just an edgy idiot who doesn't understand the ramifications of what they're doing.
Considering the perpetrator is only 17 it's more likely they're just an edgy idiot who doesn't understand the ramifications of what they're doing.
17 is plenty old enough to not be a fuckwit.
17 is plenty old enough to not be a fuckwit.
That's not what I'm saying. It was an extremely shitty and stupid as hell thing to do. I just question whether the kid realized what their actions actually meant. While I would've been aware it would be stupid to do something like this at their age I really didn't grasp the exact nuances of what this sort of action means until several years later. To put it simply I'm not disagreeing with the second part of Im Crimson's post at all and only contextually disagreeing with the first part. In general what they said seems to be true lately. I'm merely stating that this kid likely wasn't trying to be antisemitic because they likely don't grasp what that actually means. Chances are they latched on to something edgy as teens are wont to do and it resulted in them doing something really stupid.
What is this sentiment even? That's like the kind of denial a shitty parent tricks themselves into to dissociate themselves from their kid's mistakes.
I think he means more in line with why he did it. Is he actually an anti-semetic nazi supporter or just some kid trying to be edgy?
I think he means more in line with why he did it. Is he actually an anti-semetic nazi supporter or just some kid trying to be edgy?
Yeah, I'm definitely not trying to justify the kid's actions at all. They were still stupid and really shitty regardless.

Hey if he didn't wanna experience one of the worst atrocities in human history, he should have thought about that before he threw a rock.
Just reading to much into it, he is probably just touching his face. "this man, who police say suffers from mental illness was arrested for allegedly throwing a rock at one of the panels" I didn't know this guy was mentally ill.
Note the one fucker near the top right of the picture flashing a "V" sign against his cheek.
Uhh what? Are you insinuating that he's making a sign instead of, you know, just holding his finger against his chin? I see people do that all the time.
17 is plenty old enough to not be a fuckwit.
Yeah but at 17 I still did some dumb shit. Remember, that frontal lobe isnt completely developed until ~21. To him it could have just been a funny/edgy/cool thing to do. I don't think it has serious political ties.
Wait, this huge thing is in Boston ? I completely missed it when I went there some years ago. I wonder how often the thing gets smashed intentionally or not though, a structure made of glass underneath people may walk sounds like it's bound to have a few windows broken occasionally.
Considering the perpetrator is only 17 it's more likely they're just an edgy idiot who doesn't understand the ramifications of what they're doing.
Remove the explicit part about age and you've described the majority of the current alt-right. And by that I don't mean to imply the people shouldn't be held responsible nor that it makes them harmless; it's absolutely people who don't really think things through critically and ride on a wave of bullshit and propaganda. Very few of them have actual things at stake, haven't been live-changingly wronged by the opposition, don't really understand the implications of what they are suggesting or supporting. Outside of the hardened, callous, serious core, there's a massive inflated cloud of edgy clueless idiots who will flake as soon as shit gets serious.
