• Old School Runescape is Rioting over in-game Gay Pride Event
Judging from Reddit, a huge chunk of players of the medieval fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game Old School Runescape take the "old school" thing so seriously that they're embracing medieval ideas of exclusion. Yesterday "Mod Wolf," a QA analyst for Runescape at Jagex, took to Twitter toannounce "a small holiday event of mine will be coming to [Old School Runescape] this Thursday to celebrate #Pride2017." Aside from an image showing a pixelated rainbow, Mod Wolf said nothing else about the event. The internet quickly filled in its own conclusions. Within minutes, someone tweeted back "Does this really belong in medieval children's mmorpg?" and amassed almost as many likes as Mod Wolf's initial tweet. The fire spread to Reddit and the Jagex official forums, both of which soon got plastered with topics like "This is not a dating site" and "Gay Pride, I quit" and "I'm for equality, but a video game is not the place to push your political opinions." Some players simply asked why Jagex is including such an event when the chat log still censors the word "gay."
https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/runescape-pride-event-players-plan-riot-2017 Few things to note: Mod Wolf was already unpopular for nerfing an end game helmet without polling players first
They're right on both accounts Mod Wolf is blamed for nerfing the Serpentine Helm (a high level melee helm) because he "really wanted his upcoming helmet to be better than the serp helm" as he is building a quest with a new helmet in it that is supposed to be very high level. This is false and the serp helm nerf was supported and proposed by the entire devteam. He then announced the gay pride event which he is blamed on, so of course he is now blamed for "ruining the game". Both things that happened that made people hate him also did not need to be polled even though people are complaining about that despite there being precedent for these kinds of changes being unpolled as I have mentioned before. Balance changes are sometimes unpolled, same with events. The community voted on events to be unpolled and the serpentine helm nerf was widely supported by most of the community. People are using it however to prove that Mod Wolf has an agenda on this game he is trying to push as well as "destroy the polling system" even though that's not happening because Mod Wolf did neither of the things he is implicated of and had full support of the entire devteam when these ideas were floated anyway. So yes, the OP was very wrong and is based on misinformation in this community being used to hate on a developer of this game without reason.
Protests have been held in w30 falador to protest bypassing the player community Players wearing white garbs (desert outfits) at the protests have been permabanned for no given reason, mods claim players in those outfits were being racist and homophobic Massive political divide incited over free speech, player input, and involving real world political issues in a medieval fantasy game [sp]buying bf[/sp]
Some players simply asked why Jagex is including such an event when the chat log still censors the word "gay."
Really undermines the whole event when they still have this [editline].[/editline]
[sp]buying bf[/sp]
***
Because of a rainbow colored reskin of a model that already exists in the game, done on the dev's free time. If they had just done it without announcing it beforehand no one would give a shit. So much drama over literally nothing.
the desert robes do look awfully like KKK robes but im not sure whether thats a good or bad thing
not sure i would take the people claiming to have been banned just for wearing the robes all that seriously. osrs players have a storied history of claiming their hate speech bans are unjustified only for a mod to come by and drop logs of them saying horrible shit later.
It's worth pointing out that part of the issue, according to one post, is that Jagex claimed that Old School Runescape would largely remain unchanged from Runescape's August 2007 form without polls from the players. No poll was conducted for this tiny event. "One of the biggest reasons why Old School exists is that we really wanted the community to feel like it's theirs to control," he said. "We totally understand that players might feel like that that 'deal' or 'contract' is being broken when we promote or support stuff pieces of content without their say."
they say "no given reason" but if you actually log in and spend a few moments in falador and see what the white-robbed players are saying the bans are justified I just took these screenshots "I went to falador and dressed up like a klansman and shitposted some edgy /pol/ memes and got banned wtf jagex???"
i never played runescape but is this really that big of a deal? or is the problem focused on a niche of people (and overexaggerated) who dont like this event?

Either way, OSRS devs seem to be holding their ground and not letting themselves be intimidated by shitposters.
The OSRS community feels so fucking entitled to every single thing in the game sometimes. It gets annoying as shit that every little thing has to be polled, even some minor bug fixes, just because some shitters are gonna throw a tantrum that "IT DOESN'T FIT MY VIEW OF THE GAME". The fucking recoloring of the Saradomin book had to get a poll, which is absolutely hilarious. It's literally just a small event, why do people have to go to such an extent to just make themselves look like a victim?
"Does this really belong in medieval children's mmorpg?"
"How will we show our discontent for this being in a children's mmorpg?"

As someone who's played since day 1 OSRS has the worst and most toxic, bigoted community out of any game I've ever played. And it's so bizarre, because in other games with commonly cited "toxic" communities, there's competition and thus a source for frustration. OSRS is the most relaxed game possible, and yet feels like /pol/: the game sometimes.
Either way, OSRS devs seem to be holding their ground and not letting themselves be intimidated by shitposters.
they'd be pussies if any of this intimidated them

I saw it happen dozens of times with Rust's week-to-week development, and the only two changes that kept bothering people for months afterwards was when Garry and his devs implemented randomly-rolled gender and skin tone that uses your Steam ID as the seed, making the character traits unmodifiable by players. And that was funny as hell because it was great watching 15-year-olds squirm and complain they were a black woman with apple-sized tits in-game.

Turns out the op of that 'An In-Game Gay Pride event does not belong in the video game Old School Runescape.' thread doesn't like homosexuality and thinks it's weird, who would have thought

I swear, there's going to be a poll in shifting a patch of grass two units to the left in the some part of the game. I understand that players don't want RS3 2.0 to happen, and neither do I. But fuck, can the community just stop being a bunch of crybabies when they don't get what they want? It's such a stupid thing how hard the mods try to support the game, and they suddenly get a huge backlash whenever they do some little thing wrong in some players' eyes. Not even that, the community decided that they didn't want to be polled with events last year (?). And now? They want events to be polled again, just because they don't like this one. Just hilarious.

This is all pretty dumb though.
"Players banned for no given reason, said to be banned for this given reason"
No ban reason given on form when you look at why you were banned. Bans could not be appealed because no evidence was provided Mods issued manual permabans and explained why on the game forums, not the player accounts.
If this is surprising to anyone, just remember this is the same community that will literally DDoS someone over safing (eating too much in pvp). They are like wild fucking animals
My friend made an account named "antifa" And is always willing to share all the hate mail he gets it's pretty funny runescape is a special place [editline]7th June 2017[/editline]
and involving real world political issues in a medieval fantasy game
also think this is a dumb thing to care about runscape doesn't aim for any sort of realism it's super gamey
