The Nimitz-class aircraft carriers have long reigned as the biggest vessels in the US Navy, but now they have met their successor. The first of a new class of supercarriers has arrived to keep the waters of the world a safer place. The USS Gerald R. Ford has completed construction and has launched for builders trials to evaluate its performance. Named after President Gerald Ford this first-of-class supercarrier has spent the past four years under development nearly ready for service. This is the first of planned Ford-class supercarrier and testing on the open ocean has started to see how its design should influence the other nine upcoming supercarriers.
http://www.upi.com/Defense-News/2017/04/10/Super-carrier-USS-Gerald-R-Ford-begins-sea-trials/7611491832568/
I was legit thinking of a new Ford Automobile and not an Aircraft Carrier, like they made a people carrier that's like a bus or something and just got lazy with the naming.
And we've got plenty more* on the way. *They may or may not just simply be standard aircraft carriers instead of fuckhuge supercarriers.
ok but when does it reveal its 4 massive turbines and take flight
ok but when does it reveal its 4 massive turbines and take flight
We're not supposed to talk about it, OPSEC and all.
Sometimes I look at giant projects like this and can't believe people are smart / organised enough to make it happen.
I was legit thinking of a new Ford Automobile and not an Aircraft Carrier, like they made a people carrier that's like a bus or something and just got lazy with the naming.
Yeah for a second I thought they were working on a hybrid car that could drive on water like a boat from the title.
two more and then there is a new USS Enterprise
For real I wonder if they're bound to stick a railgun on on tit.
Probably not. Aircraft carriers don't normally have guns besides small point-defense stuff (and CIWS). Their weaponry is their aircraft - guns are for the fleet surrounding them. The Ford-class does use electromagnets to launch aircraft, though, replacing the steam-powered catapults of previous ships. It's a linear induction motor, not a railgun or coilgun, but it's still pretty sci-fi.
that hatch in the back looks sci fi
I still don't get why they named this class after one of the lamest presidents.
A friend and I made a Gmod map based on this thing way back in the day.
Fix Or Repair Daily, at least itll hold up better than the admiral kuzenshov [editline]13th April 2017[/editline]
I still don't get why they named this class after one of the lamest presidents.
next in line. funny thing is someday there will be a USS clinton, gw bush, obama , and possibly trump

Can't wait to do sea trials next year, shock trials should be fun
Your boat must feel like an ant next to this thing.
I'll let them keep thinking that. for now.
The USS We Don't Talk About that Time
Jeez wouldn't that be the biggest "fuck you" to a presidency. To just kinda... skip a name.

I misread it as Ford-Class supercar and then saw the "sea trial part" and was deeply confused. I was expecting an hybrid boat-car super car made by Ford
Beautiful ship. I love when military technology is stretched to its limits, a SUPERcarrier. The new launching system sounds cool too. Couldnt find the crew size, but this massive ship can hit 30 knots with TWO nuclear reactors. Amazing technology.

Man I keep forgetting on how damn massive these things are. Goddamn.
Man I keep forgetting on how damn massive these things are. Goddamn.
A Maersk Triple E class container ship is 63 meters longer. The longest ship ever built was 121 meters longer. The impressive difference being that those are basically all empty space, while an aircraft carrier is basically a city.
Jeez wouldn't that be the biggest "fuck you" to a presidency. To just kinda... skip a name.
i think we did since there's no USS Nixon.
Does anyone know what kind of crew compliment this is going to have? I am looking on the wiki and it's something just above 4,000. Is it not gearing itself toward heavy automation like the Queen Elizabeth class is doing?

[editline]14th April 2017[/editline] Oh shit I should've refreshed page. For not doing so I'll sketch the USS Nixon for you all.
I still don't get why they named this class after one of the lamest presidents.
Ford was a Navy vet of WW2 is why.
